They're both wankers, that's why.

They were polar opposites in that, while they both had massive egos, non-kayfabe Bret was a face and non-kayfabe HBK was a heel. Bret took the business and his role in it seriously and treated it and the fans with a lot of respect, while HBK fucked around (literally and figuratively), did drugs, was a complete asshole, a major politicker, and basically shit on the business.

The story Shawn tells is that he always looked up to Bret from afar, and that he only ever wanted to be as good as him.

Bret had no issue with Shawn until he got to that top spot, then he felt Bret went cold on him (the implication being that Bret was mad that Shawn was taking his spot).

Shawn says it hurt him deeply that the guy he idolised never once told him he was good or worthy of that spot or the belt. Eventually Shawn starts fueding with Bret in storyline, but he starts straying more and more into shoot territory. Thus they start falling out for real.

So Shawn's side of the story is that he felt disrespected by the way Bret shunned him after his first belt run.

I watched that interview too. Bret says that a lot of the early heat between them after WM12 was actually Bret's idea of an angle they would have that would eventually lead to a rematch a year later. Unfortunately, they both worked themselves into a shoot and by 97 they both hated each other for real. Bret went on record saying he wanted to make Shawn the top guy, and had a lot of respect for him, but Shawn was so fucked up during that due to drugs and Kliq bullshit that he became very paranoid of anyone trying to sabotage his push.
