Dave is ultimately right. The guy who tweeted him is correct but Austin's success wasn't a direct result of the Austin 3:16 speech - just his merch success and also his legendary status (the Austin 3:16 line is super badass).
Anyone who actually watched the show knows this. The Austin 3:16 speech got no pop. Austin's entrances never got pops. Occasionally you'd see an Austin 3:16 sign but it was like one in the crowd. It was not until Bret Hart, and the WWF's push of Austin leading up to that as "one tough SOB", that is directly responsible for his success in the company.
This is common knowledge. The 3:16 speech was memorable but it wasn't what made him as huge as he was
austin 3:16 put him on the map.
bret got him in the main event.
tyson made him a megastar.
vince made him an icon.
3:16 got him over with hardcore fans and showed and had what it takes to be a star. But he didn't become a star until much later.
This is what CM Punk and his marks don't understand. The pipebomb was an Austin 3:16 moment. It showed he could be a star but didn't make him. That would take longer. Expecting him to be the top guy and main eventing Mania straight away was ridiculous.
3:16 was selling like hot cakes right after the promo though

3:16 SHIRT*
um it was when Russo put him on commentary

>The Austin 3:16 speech got no pop.
To be fair the line itself got a pop at that moment for how badass it sounded. But yeah Bret was instrumental in Austin's success and ultimately put him over as strong as possible at the cost of his top face spot he had held for an entire era. Yet you'll still have shitposters on here laughing at their own jokes about dimes, basing all their info on graphs and whatculture videos rather than actually going back and watching the product.

this person gets it from 1996-2001 he was untouchable

He became white hot after that promo. He realistically could have Main evented the mania after that promo if they hadn't already put MUH ONCE IN A LIFETIME there

Do you think they should have pulled a Mania 20 and make it a triple threat with Punk going over? Would have definetly put him in the spotlight while all eyes were attracted by Rock's return.
The 3:16 speech being overblown is just another case of "history is written by the winners".
