The Smackdowns were alright. The Wrestlemania titles on Gamecube were a bit better. All of the modern games are shit.

Can't agree with you more famalam. Something about the controls and animations worked so well together. Sure there's always exceptions, but No Mercy (and really AKI engine games in general) feel less jerky than most of the later games. Probably something to do with the animations being hand-animated or whatever instead of mocap.

The grapple system was basically perfect in terms of being easy to learn while also giving the player access to many different moves.

Another thing that especially sucks nowadays is the pin mechanic - I hate that golf swing meter bullshit and I always lose on an early pin because I suck at those timing minigames. From what I've read, in the AKI games kicking out was determined by a combination of overall health, spirit, and plain old button-mashing. It's perfect because with enough damage you can eventually put anyone down, and it's much easier to kick out earlier in the match.

That it plays pretty much like Returns but with improvements, a shitload of edit slots, decent online, some new moves and the return of the Cage Deathmatch from Fire Pro D. I don't want much - just as long as the above are set in stone, I'm satisfied.

I haven't played much of the 2K games so I can't comment much on Universe since I only played it for a half hour, but GM Mode seems much more fluid than Universe. I never truly won the ratings war between Raw and SmackDown in GM Mode, but I just had so much fun making fantasy matches with certain wrestlers and storylines and just going from there. I probably spent more time on GM mode than I did on the actual game.

WM2000 is by far superior to No Mercy, and it really only had 1 perk to define such excellent over the latter_ title history.

During college we had literally had over 30 people competing for the titles, even a full on women's divison, these chicks were all up in arms for their world title, and I shit you not (I still get a giggle outta it) our women's title was called Lady Universe.

As for me, I was the Triple H of our division, had the most and longest runs with the world strap.
I believe I stacked about 57 victories during one title reign_ I remember all the heat I had for being the best haha ah the golden years!

Master of Smackdown vs. Raw 2006 here, ask me anything about the game

Go-to finisher is the Torture Rack, since it's my best character's finisher. I hate the move but it's effective in-game. My real favorite is the Razor's Edge-style powerbomb.

I know all the best strategies for that game. Basically:
>always work Clean, not Dirty
>top-rope and rebound moves constantly for instant finishers
>turn off Stamina because it's fucking boring
>hold on for the full 4 count on ropebreaks
>submission A for damage, submission B for the win
Took me fucking years to figure out how to do the rebound moves and the running ground attacks. Never thought to use the square button. Also immensely useful to instantly get behind the opponent.

PRO TIP: The "Head Attack" (under "Ready Moves") can be spammed infinitely after you land the first one. Same with the headbutt from behind. Instant win.

When did the games start including commentary? I've been collecting Gamecube games are just bought Wrestlemania 18, Wrestlemania 19 and Day or Reckoning; none of commentary.

That actually sounds like a pretty cool storyline - say you have a new guy who can't get over, you have Taker convert him to a druid, then once Taker's leaves he just keeps going in singles competition.

The corner version is cool, too, but in SvR 2006, it's not really powerful enough to use as a finisher. I'm all about optimizing my moveset for fast wins. According to SvR '06 logic, a top-rope knee drop is the fastest, fastest-recovering, most devastating, most crowd-popping move ever. Many matches won with knee drops and powerbomb finisher spam.

I don't play that easy shit, either. Legend difficulty or NOTHING, because I love spamming unblockable moves.

I used to hate having to fight Val Venis in WM2k. He was incredibly difficult. And i hated when he would grind his junk over me!!
