That short run Ricky Steamboat had with Jericho was amazing.

Matt Hardy has to be one of the most surprising comeback stories that I've personally witnessed in the pro wrestling industry. And I say this as someone that always rooted for him from day one, as my personal favorite Hardy.

From the Attitude Era days it was clear that his brother would be the true star. After they split in the 2000s Matt had a decent run with the V1 gimmick, but otherwise he was never really over with the fans. Even after the Edge and Lita scandal where he initially gained a TON of support from fans, that eventually dwindled and while Edge went on to have a successful main event career in WWE, Matt went on a downward spiral after leaving WWE.

The man went down to TNA and other indy feds, and became a running joke among wrestling fans for being the "other" Hardy, and for being that guy that Edge cucked and who still couldn't shut up about it and get over it. Then he just kept adding fuel to the fire with personal issues and erratic behavior, such as gaining weight, threatening suicide apparently to garner public sympathy, and deciding to marry Reby Sky who many regarded as a ring rat that would quickly clean him out for all the money he had in a divorce. The man became a huge joke, and it looked like it would never get any better with his antics.

It got so bad that the forum thecoli.com actually has a thread called "the L's of Matt Hardy" that reached almost 2000 replies. The majority of the thread documented all of Matt's downfall and every single negative thing about his life and career (his losses, a.k.a. his L's). That's how bad he was being made fun of, and how low he had gotten.

And then.....Big Money Matt happened. The gimmick got over among those in the IWC, and for the first time in a long time, Matt was getting praise for his wrestling career; for doing well with the gimmick in terms of kayfabe and entertainment.

And not too long after that.....Broken Matt happened, and went viral. He managed to be a non-WWE wrestler that had a gimmick that many casuals knew of, liked and cared about....a rarity these days. Then he returned to WWE with his brother to arguably the loudest pop at Wrestlemania. While Jeff is still the more over Hardy.....the fact that WWE fans chanted "Delete" on at least two occasions before the Hardys even returned to WWE (as well as during their return and afterwards), shows that Matt is officially a hot commodity on his own. And only time will tell, but at this point he may be able to translate that into solo success in the biggest wrestling company....with or without being "broken".

He's in great shape, he's cleaned himself up, his career is at its best point in many years, and he appears to have a wonderful supportive family. Although its only been a few years so far, Reby is still with him as his wife and the mother of his kids, and clearly supports him strongly.....suggesting that the relationship is far less fragile and doomed for failure than everyone initially assumed.

TL;DR: OP is probably right. Matt Hardy had one of the best comebacks ever. (And sorry for the long-ass post but I'm bored at home and Matt is one of my personal favorites so got a little mark-ish and typed out all this bullshit)

In 2002 he was stronk guy who does stronk shit. His turning feud would be one be where it was thought that he wasn't stronk enough to F5 Big Show but hey, he was.

Then for most of 2003 it was all about how athletic he was with his Angle feud. Then it went right back to how big and stronk Lesnar was at survivor series where they wouldn't shut up about how big Lesnar was on the biggest team in survivor series history.

From then on until Mania 20 bork's whole character was just "I am the fucking strong" which is the same shit we are seeing today.

His 2017 run is compleatly identical to his 2002 run except he just shows up less and only does like 3 moves now.
