I figured that what they were going to do with Wade Barret, when he re-debuted, was have him punch relentlessly (thus "barret barrage) but they didn't do that.
I think a guy could get over if he managed to make his boxing technique something people actually noticed, instead of seeing it as a meaningless transition move. Sort of like the "all in" style a lot of high-flyers have.
It might actually work well for Dean to do the "brawler" gimmick, but be completely relentless with his striking. And toss in a bit of high-risk finishers. It wouldn't make him perfect, but that's probably the best gimmick out there for him.
