All they had to do was have Cena bring it back out whenever he won the title to keep it in the awareness. I'm sure they sold plenty of Smoking Skull belts back in the day, but it was always Austin's. Watching guys like HHH, Orton, and Punk haul that gaudy piece of shit around like it meant something to them was physically painful.

I take some comfort in the fact that HHH finally replaced the NXT belts with ones that don't look like a five year old designed them (though he should have kept the super-wide strap on the main belt, since it made it look important). Maybe they're finally catching on.

Hopefully, someone will replace it like Rock did with the WWE title, or retcon it like Cody did with the IC title. Those each took nearly a decade though.

Because they need something with their logo as big as possible on it. That way when they give one to sports champions they can have their logo front and center in any promotional pictures, and anybody who buys a replica is essentially a walking ad. Same reason they put shit on the back of all their shirts and have that dumb fucking tag on the bottom. It's no longer about making something that looks good but about making something that everyone knows is your product.
