No Judo thread on asp? Allow me to fix that.

Share favourite techniques, training regimes, information about dojos, ask questions; whatever you have relating to judo (or other grappling, if you'd like)
>>
I did judo between ages 10 and 12. Got to orange belt, quit because I was too much of a pussy to handle the trainer actually pushing us while we were doing intervals. Regret it as fuck. Now I'm 25 and would like to pick up a martial art again. Judo was fun, but I also want something that's good in a real fight - not because I want to fight but because I don't want to be afraid of pain and getting my ass kicked. Should I get back to Judo or start Kyokushin or Muay Thai?
>>
>>2414983
Go Muay Thai and Judo for self defense. It sounds like you could use the conditioning of Muay Thai, so that's probably the more important of the two for you, but good grappling as well makes for an effective fighter.

Kyokushin can be good, but in general it's not going to be as effective in the short term. You might be able to compete with an average Muay Thai fighter when you reach a black belt. Might. If your school is good.
>>
>>2415433
Thank you. I was thinking that I should stick to just one martial art and build a proper routine instead of biting off more than I can chew. Maybe I'll start with MT and add judo after six months or so.
>>
>>2415433
Muay Thai's clinch work and clinch entry have so much great synergy with judo, and judo's ashi waza crosses over with a lot of MT's clinch takedowns

Ideally a person could be a clinch expert, with mastery of both being able to control your opponent and either leading them into massive knees or elbows during the clinch or on the break, or leading them to a massive slam.

Also judo's newaza gives a person the ability to scramble and not worry about getting taken down, leading one to commit to their strikes.

One thing i have found fascinating is that the Australian Olympic judo coach and current UFC fighter Dan Kelly has incorporated dirty boxing/dirty box into his fighting style. What makes this neat from a judoka's POV is you can see the kumikate/gripping fighting cross over. The habit of grabbing the sleeve crosses over and you see Kelly grab the gloves, wrist, and wrappings similar to when you would grab the gi sleeve in randori.

You can find it, but dojos are few and far between. A better bet is aikido as it is jiu jutsu derived. The caveat here is that you need to be selective of your dojo. Many go way too far down the peace, love and harmony path. If you find the right one, they are essentially teaching old school Japanese Jiu Jutsu
>>
>>2428321
Err, I hate to nitpick here, but the whole aikido model, as well as the daito ryu model it are backwards compared to classical jujutsu.

In traditional aikido the student essentially acts as a training dummy for his teacher and is expected to absorb what the teacher knows through feeling his technique and observing him. Many of Uesiba's Uchideshi for example claimed if he woke up in the middle of the night they would as well. Much of there training consisted of following him around doing things for him in addition to training (Ueshiba's teacher, Sokaku did the same)

And while Ureshiba produced a handful of students with skills similar to his, you can probably see the flaw in this teaching model. It requires the student to be almost obsessive about watching and imitating his teacher.

Jujutsu on the other hand put the teacher at the disposal of the student. The teacher or senior student was the one getting thrown so he could control the speed and "aliveness" of the kata. This way the student was always forced to work with someone who as at least a little better than him; who would force him to hone is technique

There are other technical differences of course. The weapon techniques in classical Jujutsu tend to be sound, where as those in aikido are often nonsense by the standards of preparing someone for a fight with a knife/stick/sword.

Ueshiba rounded out alot of the sharp jujutsu techniques he took from daito ryu, This is in part because he was focused more on high level internal skills than practical work--a--day jujutsu. In the post war days the aikido honbu would always keep a group of men around who could deal with challengers--something that was common in the first few decades post WWII. They were often privately taught the older "sharp" techniques.

i personally feel most old school jujutsu looks more like early kodokan judo than post-war aikido.

In any case aikidoka comparing that to their experience in judo or Bjj are a dime a dozen

well to be honest, current modern judo is mongolian wrestling with submissions

People lost their shit and bitch and moan about the 2009 era rules, shit its almost 10 years since the no leg touch rule has been in use. But the people that complain over looked how modern judoka look a new avenues to go around the rules (like the new kata gurama) or engineer new moves from existing moves (the korean seoi nage/inverted seoi) or go look at other styles and bring over some of their moves (monglians and eastern euros bringing over their lifts like the mongol lift or their version of suplexing)

So current IJF judo is filled with some main stay forward throws like seoi nage, uchi mata, and then a bunch of new throws that have kept judo fresh like the mongol lift, inverted seoi, no leg kata gurama,

The new kata guruma and shit are like buttscooping in bjj: stricltly insider games with zero application outside the small circle of those who do what I say and not what should be done.
This is why people will continue to bitch about those shitty rules both in Judo and BJJ.
Those are the kind of rules that set appart martial arts and sports.
>>
>>2416150
people who write reviews on yelp are faggots

judo definitely isnt for faggots. There's a reason the old and chronically injured go to bjj, a good judo school is hard, you are taking 100+ falls a session, plus live. Chances are the school is just rough and tumble and yelp reviewers are just assholes.
>>
>>2429573
new kata garuma works very well in any gi environment, and if you're good enough with wrist grabs, no gi as well. People often throw their legs backwards as the entry is initiated, since people are only used to the entry with legs, so often times they lean into the throw for you.

t. judoka, wrestler, bjj dude
>>
>>2428444
>It requires the student to be almost obsessive about watching and imitating his teacher.
Or the student just not being an idiot.
>>
>>2430425
Imitating your teachers basic technique is a bit different than imitating all his little quirks of movement, expeically if he never spells it out and expects you to just pick it up and obsessively train it into your body on your own.

For example Sagawa, a student of Ueshiba's teacher, Sokaku said he saw Sokaku practice his secret stuff twice and was never actually taught it. He just imitated it and created his own private training routine to learn it himself, he developed a set of exercises he did every day, only missing a few days his entire life as a martial artist
>>
>>2430044
My question is actually that is it still a kata guruma or more a yoko otoshi?
How do you set it up in nogi? I'm seriously curious about it since kata gurma was one of my go to throw.
Bjj judo here, wreslting by force since I love no gi.

Switzerland. France is similar, without the local folkstyle.
>>
>>2431413
done poorly it is more like yoko otoshi.

I'm going to try and walk you through this, we'll see how it goes.

I'm a left handed fighter.

I get right hand on their right wrist, push down and across, and use my left hand to establish a key lock, or just grab their bicep from the back side of the arm.

I tend to drag them backwards and to your left, circling towards the arm of theirs you have controlled.

As they attempt to loosen the arm and wrench it out of control, i do either a yoko gake, yoko otoshi, or kata garuma. For kata garuma, just shoot your head under the controlled arm and gator roll essentially.

I hope that helps.

I'm sorry but i must share this with you, /judo/. I've been a judoka for life, but today i started Muay Thai as a secondary martial art. I'm a quiet type individual. Got a good sense of humor and all. But like most of you, i have an autistic side that i have to keep grappled at all times. Today, my grappling failed, and i failed at having a nice, anonymous first day at the dojo.

Just run. Fights don't happen unless you want them to and you stand around and engage some drunk dummy. Sober people won't fight you unless you start shit with them and aggro.

If you're getting mugged the guy could have a knife so just give up your cash, no big deal, don't escalate.

MMA for self defense is actually counter productive. Just be smart, cheerful and humble (running away is fine).

Also you'll get more injuries training then you ever will in real life since the chance of getting in a fight is 0% if you have normal IQ.

>but I gotta protect my gf

Life isn't like the movies.
Just work out and have a light gf you can pick up and run away with.

I don't know actually... It looks like a weird combo between O soto gari and Tai otoshi.
Both of them work well in no gi, but from the over under espcially, and the neck-biceps control at least for O soto fari.
