Look at what they did that show. After weeks of looking like a chump, getting beat up by the League of Jobbers while no one helped him, Reigns snapped and when ham on all of them. He shut the fuck up and beat the snot out of people that annoyed the audience with how lame they were. When has that ever NOT gotten someone over?

Shutting the fuck up and gooning dweebs was all Braun Strowman did, and he was the most over guy on the show before he was fed to Reigns in a C PPV. Braun isn't HALF the wrestler Roman is, but he was 10 times more over heading into Fast Lane.

But at this point, they have so thoroughly ruined Reigns, there is no way they could just do that with him as a face and have it work. The boos would still be there for ROMANWINSLOL. They NEED to turn him heel for YEARS. Beat up undercard faces until you run out of undercard faces, then start to put him up against uppercard faces. He needs to win by cheating a bunch (preferably on his own, the distraction/interference bullshit has become WAY too played out for it to work without a really good angle to call for it), or via other heel antics, and ultimately lose to main event faces the crowd actual likes for huge cheers. Then, after like two years of being the most deliberately hated bag of dicks in the company, they might be able to turn him Badass Face (kind of like when he was at his peak in The SHIELD, just silence and violence) with actual success.
