Did anyone ever like Warzone/Attitude even when they were released?
Warzone came with my Playstation so I played it for that reason, kid me knew the N64 wrestling games were far better.
Yes, I thought they were both awesome. They landed at a time when the expectation for all wrestling games was some arcade fighter only a little more advanced than Double Dragon.
I liked that if you learned the timing you can dial in a move while your opponent is down and they walk right into it without having a chance to recover. You can totally call a match in this way and feel just like Bret Hart.

>They landed at a time when the expectation
that's just not true at all. they were considered shit from the moment they were released

Most people knew they were bad games but they were the first WWF games to feature extensive create-a-wrestler. That's what made them popular.
Well, that and the license of course.
As a kid I hated them because I had been spoiled by the AKI games. However, as I got older I learned to appreciate them more, particularly Attitude. Then I finally learned how to play them and I felt proud of the fact that I was memorizing the moves' button combinations and knew my way around the ring. Sure they're mediocre games at best but it's eons better than the dreaded WCW Nitro and Thunder titles. Now THOSE games are truly unplayable.

If it wasn't aki it was shit.

What's not true? That expectation was low due to the overall poor quality of other wrestling games up to that point?
That absolutely is true.
Warzone and Attitude were considered passable fighting games. Most mainstream games journalists were reviewing them in comparison to Tekken or Fighter's Destiny or Street Fighter 2, so they were did poorly in that respect.
Gamers who were also wrestling fans generally really liked them.
I thought they sucked when I played them.
At least the ECW game had blood.
I only bring up the ECW game because it looked similar to War Zone/Attitude.

At the time they were great games since you could make your own wrestlers. But Warzone was very limited. Also moves were hard to do sometimes taking 3 directions and button press to do a finishing move.
The Smackdown Series was a godsend with more simple controls.
I thought they were pretty bad at the time, but I only ever rented them a few times (create-a-wrestler seemed worthwhile enough to slave through the bad game for, I guess).
The real shitters IMO were Nitro/Thunder and WWF Royal Rumble on Dreamcast.

Same engine, I think.
