I'm sure the whole reason is he's butthurt that he's never had a Mania main event title win, and wants to join that club. Probably said to management he wants it this year after 14 years in the company or he's leaving.

Lost to Trips at 25, had to make room for and lose to DB at 30. Retaining in the triple threat with Trips and Cena at 24 doesn't count because it wasn't the main event (even though it should have been, fucking Undercarder...).
