Michaels appeared to be on his way to dropping the title to Hart at Mania.

That was to come on a USA network special on February 13 from Lowell, MA. Michaels, when finding out he was dropping the title back, and also was out of the Mania main event and instead would be losing in the semifinal to arch-rival Hart, came to the building, claimed a potential career ending knee injury, gave a teary-eyed speech acting as if his career was over, and vacated the title. While his knee was legitimately bad, he didn't even undergo surgery and returned quicker than anyone expected, and without missing a step in the ring.
