Everyone likes the Super Bowl numbers and refers to them as such. It puts the game in historical context and it makes for easy reference for a sport with seasons that span over two calendar years. It's fucking infuriating when ESPN refers to the "2016 Rose Bowl" when it was the Rose Bowl for the 2015 season and it occurred literally New Year's Day of 2016.

It doesn't really make sense not to number them to be honest. They have a network for the strict purpose of archiving their shit, and people see the number there and know what it is. It also gives the event prestige, "Wow, there have been 33 of these? This was so good, I want to watch some of the other ones".
