Also it could be this. Super Cena's transition to Big Match John started around after he buried the Nexus, and he admitted to Jericho that it was retarded of him to do so.

Cena's time at the top is coming to a close, and he is making up for all those times he over came the odds and is now actually putting people over.

First time I saw that it sent me over the edge to the point that I stopped watching. But looking back I actually really like the finish. It was very similar to Brock's UFC debut where he just dominated but one rookie fuck-up cost him the match.

In the case of the Extreme Rules match I could buy into Brock being rusty and getting carried away in the heat of the moment. He still looked like a monster in the finish. It also paved the way for future matches that would be harder to sell if either had gone over clean

Ok, how should I explain this. Normally I would agree, but.
While watching their first match at Mania 28 I really felt that Cena was going to win. The flow of the match simply told me that. And when The Rock won, I was like, what? Where did that come from? It was a genuine kayfabe moment when I bought into the match and ended up with a huge surprise on my hands. A surprise I kept questioning for a while - it really felt like The Rock should not have won despite doing so. An embarrassingly marky situation for me that I could not get over quickly.
And then next year you get the same match except Cena simply did not repeat his mistake. And I don't mean the same match because it was the same 2 guys, I mean the same match because they were doing the exact same things they did last year. The Rock had like a hundred matches with Triple H and none of them felt so much alike as these 2. And all it took for the same match to end differently was Cena doing a single thing differently. While The Rock did not improve at all despite almost losing last year and Cena proving he's better than him even in defeat. That's how hard I got worked by these 2 matches. I got worked very hard.
So yeah, I guess that is a clean loss but I just can't bring myself to feel it.

P.s: and another thing they did differently in the second match was using eachother's finishers but that did not add anything to it. You're no Austin, Cena.
