He was never that technically sound when he was young either, he got by on charisma and mic skills. Almost anyone else in the cruiser division was better in ring than him. He was great as a technical wrestler, but never the best or even top 5 in any company he's been under contract under, except for SMW. He's top 3 wherever he goes as an overall package though.

Chris Jericho has an uncanny ability not just to get things or catchphrases over, but put over other wrestlers. He may not be the best wrestler around, but he's technically sound and has amazing in ring psychology when a match calls for it. He is also undoubtedly one of the best on the mic and super charismatic.

My point is he doesn't need to be THE guy as far as fans are concerned, that's not his thing. I promise you one thing though, backstage everyone knows that he's THE guy.
