Because he could've been a close to Tanahashi or Nakamura-tier star by now but he left to try his hand at MMA and got his ass kicked over and over again by nobodies ending with a pathetic 4-11 record while the other two became major superstars to the point that Nakamura was signed by the WWE and Tanahashi's the saviour of New Japan. Then he had to come back to NJPW and it took him four years to win a singles belt because the company's still bitter that he left in a period where they really needed new stars.

Said singles belt, it bears mentioning, is a midcard title from an aborted series of events meant to showcase new talent, and rather than being a long reign he ended up losing the belt twice in 2016 alone, even if he quickly regained it, before losing it again in Wrestle Kingdom to longtime rival Hirooki Goto. And going by the announced cards, he isn't even getting a feud to get the belt back, he's being put in a program with Will Ospreay.

Bad decisions and bitterness go hand in hand is what I'm saying.
