the audience overlap might have been true 20 years ago, but wwe is a childrens show now. i don't know if you've had the misfortune of going to a wwe show recently, but if you haven't i can tell you how it usually is. the crowd now is made up of elementary school kids in Cena gear and their parents who are bored to tears and can't wait to go home. the rest of the crowd is filled in with literal fedoras and bronies who cheer opposite of how their supposed to regardless of what's going on in the show. the days of rowdy shirtless drunken chads are long gone and aren't coming back unless something drastic happens.

as for trying so hard to get mcgregor associated with them, it's the same as the failed photo op with lebron. they're doing anything they can to try to stay culturally relevant because they know the ship is sinking. they'd rather dust off old relics like taker and goldberg than actually admit their product is dogshit and overhaul it.
