Ozeki Terunofuji:
Once again after the July tournament this year and personally for the 3rd time, Terunofuji is Ozeki Kadoban and faces a possible demotion. Following Goeido and Kotoshogiku, he is the 137th since the 1969 July Grand Sumo Tournament.

Sekiwake Takayasu:
Takayasu stays at the Sekiwake rank and is in Sanyaku for 3 tournaments in a row.

Sekiwake Return Okinoumi:
Okinoumi has been re-promoted to Sekiwake after 10 tournaments. Reclaiming the rank he held in March 2015. He is returning to Sanyaku after 3 tournaments since May this year.

Komusubi Debut Mitakeumi:
Mitakeumi is the first Rikishi from Dewanoumi Beya to make his Komusubi debut since the present Shisho inherited it on the first of February 2014. The previous one was Futeno in the 2005 September Grand Sumo Tournament. He is the first Rikishi from Nagano Prefecture to reach the Sanyaku ranks since Takanobori in the Spring Tournament 1932 (February). This makes him the second person since the Showa Era. The last time a Rikishi from Nagano Prefecture was in Sanyaku had been the very Takanobori in the Spring Tournament (January) 1936. Concerning Rikishi who were successful in Amateur Sumo as students, Mitakeumi is the 43rd to achieve this after Takarafuji in July of last year. He is the second former student of Toyo University after Tamanoshima in September 2001. Entering Sumo as Makushita Tsukedashi, he reached the Sanyaku ranks in 10 tournaments, which makes him the 5th fastest since the Showa Era.
>>
Komusubi Return Tamawashi:
Tamawashi returns to the Komusubi rank after 10 tournaments, the rank he held previously in March of 2015.

Makuuchi Debut Hokutofuji:
Hokutofuji is the fifth Rikishi from Hakakku Beya to make his Makuuchi debut since the present Shisho founded it on the 27th of September 1993. The previous, Oiwato, debuted in the 2005 September Grand Sumo Tournament. He is the 10th Rikishi from Saitama Prefecture to reach the Makuuchi Division. The previous one had been Daieisho in September 2015. He is the 6th former student of Nippon Sport Science University following Chiyotairyu who reached the first league in May 2012. By taking only 10 tournaments since his debut to reach the first league (excluding Makushita Tsukedashi), Hokutofuji is the second fastest to reach the first league since 1958.

Makuuchi Debut Ishiura:
Ishiura is the first Rikishi from Miyagino Beya to enter the first league since Daikiho (current Shikona Yamaguchi) in May 2013 and the third from Tottori Prefecture post WWII. He is following Kotozakura who had his Makuuchi debut in March 1963. He is the 35th Rikishi from Nihon University following Daishomaru and Akiseyama who had been promoted this March.

Hokutofuji and Ishiura:
After Daishomaru and Akiseyama, they are the 87th and 88th former amateur from Japanese Student Sumo reaching the first league.
>>
Makuuchi Return Hidenoumi:
Hidenoumi returns to the first league 3 tournaments after his demotion in May.

Makuuchi Return Chiyotairyu:
Chiyotairyu returns to the first league 3 tournaments after his demotion in May.

>"The '33 wins in 3 bashos' criterion is in place."
What is this shit. This is meant to be guaranteed but surely if he does an 11-4 and gets say a second consecutive Kanto-sho it is something they should at least consider.
>>
>>1951971
I can't name any modern Ozeki that got it without the 33 wins off the top of my head. It's not impossible though.

Goeido's last basho was Yokozuna worthy but if he returns to his usual form he would be he worst zuna ever
>>
Is there anywhere in America to practice sumo? It always seemed like fun, and I've wanted to try learning some
>>
>>1952810
This is the only place I know, hope you're lucky enough to live nearby http://www.usasumo.com/learn/sumo-classes/
>>
Day 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m53HHbtH47E
>>
Can someone give me a quick rundown of the rules so I can better appreciate this.

I understand they're fighting to put the opponent out of the ring or too encourage them to faceplant and it's all about barging and belt control.

What am I missing?
>>
>>1953381
Part of what makes Sumo fun is the relative lack of rules, if you step out of the ring or any part of the body besides the bottom of your feet touch the Dohyo, you lose.

Besides that there is a short list of forbidden techniques, no groin punches, no kicking above the waist, no punching with a close fist, no eye pokes and no hair pulling
>>
>>1953385
Thanks for the response.

What with the branchy things?
>>
>>1953381
Basically these:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinjite
>>
>>1953386
On the belt? Those are the Sagari, they're entirely ceremonial. I've heard they are representative of the ropes hanging at the front of Shinto shrines.

Besides the sport aspect Sumo is very ceremonial.
>>
>>1953389
Alright cool. Thanks guys.
>>
1st Day impressions
Hokutofuji - Solid. Did not look nervous at all.
Takanoiwa - Zero tawara awareness or slip. I don't know which is worst.
Shohozan - First day show of strength award. Against Chiyonokuni too which we can all agree isn't lacking in the strength department.
Takayasu - Endo just gave up. No insight on Takayasu.
Terunofuji - Half-assed tachiai. Half-assed bout. Humiliating loss by tsuridashi. Someone should inform him of his kadoban status.
Goeido - Looks good like last basho.
Hakuho - Won intelligently without using strength. Saving strength because recovery in progress?
Harumafuji - In all fairness Tamawashi's nodowa looked to me like a throat grab.

2nd Day impressions
Ikioi - Mental note: Do not slap Ikioi on the face. He does not like it.
Takekaze - Fast and with a well executed plan. I like it. Contrast with Chiyootori bout. Also planned but without the flexibility to change the plan once the initial belt grab failed. Ichinojo could have forced him down much sooner but even him was surprised that Chiyootori didn't try something else.
Kotoyuki - Shohozan bout: Was it an henka? Ok technically it was but in the slowmo you can see Kotoyuki carefully eyeing the tachiai while Shohozan blindly charges with the head down. Kotoyuki made the decision then so it is an intelligent "outsmarting" move.
Okinoumi - Solid performance.
Takayasu - A bundle of nerves.
Terunofuji - He is clearly out of it. Injury or otherwise he is not going to make it.
Kisenosato - Without pressure looks solid.
All four non Asian rikishi look very weak so far.
>>
Day 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6ORrY_VgHY
>>
That nigga Arawashi will make it far. Sanyaku in 2017 for sure

Hakuho and Kakuryu looked weak
>>
>>1958444
You're not the only one talking about it, Hakuho hasn't looked himself for the past few tournaments. He's been pretty mum about whatever injury has been causing him to take bashos off too.

September last year was the first time he had pulled out of a tournament since 2006.
>>
>>1954924
I take it that means Kisenosato fucked up at the crucial moment again?
>>
>>1958878
You won't believe it but he lost on day 1 and completely fucked up on day 3.

Japan Times extract
>Yokozuna Hakuho reached a milestone Tuesday, picking up his 1,000th career win by defeating No. 2 maegashira Kaisei on the third day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

>The 31-year-old Mongolian is the third sumo wrestler to collect 1,000 wins, following in the footsteps of the late former yokozuna Chiyonofuji, who ended his career with 1,045 wins, and former ozeki Kaio, who had a total of 1,047 victories.

>“Two great sumo wrestlers had reached 1,000 wins, and of them, I had fought against Kaio on the dohyo and thought it was amazing when he achieved the feat (in 2010). At that time, I never thought I would be the third one,” Hakuho said.

Note the strategically placed Japanese flag.
>>
Hate watching aoiyama and kaisei go through the meat grinder rankings, they just get absolutely demolished.
>>
>>1958968
I really hope he can make it to 1050, he is looking a bit shaky compared to his old self this basho

that said he's still 3-0
>>
>>1959396
eh i figure if he warriors out another year he'll get there.
>>
3rd Day impressions
Hokutofuji - I jinxed him on my day 1 comment. In the last 2 bouts he seems unable to come up with a plan nor get a modicum of control over the bout.
Ikioi - Solid. Best overall performance of the basho so far.
Takayasu - He won but it did not look at all good.
Kisenosato - It must be quite frustrating if you are a fan of him. He just did not resist Endo's push and just gave up. Maybe I should be crediting Endo more.
Goeido - Luckiest guy. Two slips wins in a row.
>>
Day 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xE2s2RaTGI
>>
>>1959419
I think that, more than that, 2017 is his last realistic chance to win all 6 Bashos. Assahoryu did it and thats the only blemish in his career
>>
>>1959396
>>1961695
I think he can make 1050, I'm definitely not so sure he can win 6 basho in a row these days.

The Ozeki have been holding their own for the first time ever, except for the injured Terunofuji. There's a lot of strong new blood these days too.

What a day!
Aoiyama finally able to pull a victory out after coming close a few times already.

Tamawashi is lookin hot. If he keeps this up he could be an ozeki in no time. Endou as well, though hes always a bit shakey.

On a non-makuuchi note, Osunaarashi is 6-0 so far. Hopefully he keeps it up and we can see him rise up again.

Endo's kinboshi against Hakuho was a thing of beauty. Hakuho was on fire on this basho until then. If you rewatch his day 4 and 5 you can see Hakuho delivers very precise pushes (almost looks effortless). His reading of opponent's balance and his precision in delivering the final push sometimes seems out of this world. Endo did very good in closing up quick and locking Hakuho's left arm while pushing and trying to control Hakuho's right arm.

>Hakuho-Yoshikaze
Hakuho's henka just shows he is not fully recovered and saving a lot of his strength.
I don't know what to say about Yoshikaze other than top sumo rikishi require some amount of awareness. Charging your way out of the dohyo is not acceptable. He was embarrassed. Hakuho was embarrassed. The crows was embarrassed.

>>
Another Yokozuna dream destroyed.
>>
>>1973660
He still can do it but needs to win everything now. 3 Yokozuna and the other 3 Ozeki. Not easy but it wasn't easy to start with.

>he at least did it once last basho so nothing is impossible.
>>
>>1973693
I mean I want to give him the benefit if the doubt but every other Ozeki keeps choking up. It would take a miracle.

>>
Day 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGzMbqEuJqg

>We all fell for the Ura meme
>The real meme was Ishiura all along
>>
>>1981149
Hype always makes dudes fail, just look at Endo
>>
Also, when will they put Ishiura against the big guys (4him)? Is time to at least throw him an Ozeki
>>
>>1982461
On the very last day unless he is tied for the basho before that in which case it will be the day before that so as to fight on the last day against the opponent he is tied with. However it is very complicated and all depends on how the remaining days play out. Say Kakuryu losses tomorrow but all 8-1 guys win then there will be 4 tied for the yusho and then he may be forced to go against one of the Yokozuna as soon as day 11.
Nevertheless he is almost assured to get the Kanto-sho now and guaranteed if he wins 10 bouts or more.
>>
Unbelievable run from Ishiura. His record at the lower divisions isn't even that impressive.
>>
>>1979944
cheers m8, he seems like a fine dude, i just don't want to seem like a total rando but i'm thinking that's what i'm going to end up doing.
>>
>>1974842
tochinoshin got fucking robbed
>>
>>1982817
It seems like an error of planning on the banzuke. The big bouts between Yokozunas are in the last 2 days, but if by chance Ishiura is still in the race they have to give him one. Then we would have a basho without 2 Yokozunas facing each other
>>
Day 10:
https://youtu.be/slxF62wYt-4
>>
>>1985266
The problem is that you have to be pretty sure the Ozeki or Yokozuna you choose is no longer able to win the basho because if he is then it will be unfair to the others. That is why they delay it until the very last moment.
>>
>>1985973

I think if you go on some other sumo forums people usually talk about that sicne they have mroe information.

For this basho all I remember is that Ichinojo lost around 15kg and was unable to practice for a bit because of his injury. If I had to make some guesses on whos gained weight I'd say chiyonokuni and Kaisei are looking a little bigger than average. Tochi has always had insane bulk.
