Haven't skated in 9 years or so, but the other day I had the soundtrack to Blind's 'What If' video from '05. I'm not sure if Blind are still a lesser-seen brand nowadays, but I definitely recommend the video, it was killer:

Lean forward as far as you can and then pretty much slam your front trucks onto the quarterpipe
>>1948711
Dude, no.
Slamming your front foot down works, kinda but its unnecessary and over the top. The proper way to drop in is more of gentle, natural motion. Put your weight on your front foot, lean in and commit 100% to it.

>lean in and commit 100% to it

make sure you bend your knees. Makes it easier to stay over the board with your centre of mass lower to the ground.
But no matter how much advice we give you you _are_ going to fall over the first few times. Don't be a pussy and keep trying.

Vans Style 112. The toe cap was making my flicks a little weird at first but I've grown used to them. Holding up pretty nice. Only had them like 2 weeks.

Ty all. When I do it I find the board kept sliding from under me before I could even properly lean forward. As in instead of the board pivoting on the axis of the back truck/tail it would instead slide downwards as I leant forward and go without me. Anything I can do to avoid this?

>>1949623
This is beause you're not actually leaning forward. You want to keep all of your weight on you back foot as you lean forward. Honestly, do not put any weight on your front foot. Everything on the back foot and start to ""fall"" forward like you were doing one of those trust exercises. Then, right at the last minute, right when you thnk you're about to fall flat on your face at the bottom of the quarter, press down with your front foot and push your front truck into the quarter. If you fall on your face then you know you're doing it right. Try a few more times and you'll nail it.
Falling backwards is a sign of not committing (i.e. being a pussy)

Alright, depending how long you've been lurking here, you know that I want to work in the industry as a filmer (yeah, I know, I'm not up to their standards). First reasonable suggestion that was given to me was "go work with your local shop". I did and this is the shit that happened.
>met up with the guy who runs the shop, says that there is no riders on the team, everyone who rides a board is a friend of the shop. Which I know is a lie because he has a shop pro (I use the term loosely) and kids who get boards from him
>...ok....
>Films for 12 hours straight from dusk till dawn, literally, cramped in a sedan with five dudes
>Makes a two minute edit, asks for $50 and a board because at this point in my life, I'm eating sleep for dinner.
>Shop owner whines, gives me a deck and throws me $7 from his pocket
>I begrudgingly take it
>Mind you, I run his current YouTube channel and his current "employees" (who are underpaid) runs all his social media accounts
>A week later, he asked me for more clips, I told him I'll try and have it by next week.
>Within that week, he fires his entire staff (aforementioned kids) for wanting to be paid properly
>Hears stuff about how he doesn't really push to make connections with sales reps and TMs to get kids on the map, from the kids themselves
I'm not sure if this is going to work out but I'm giving it a shot until he gives me another board. If he's willing to change, I'll do it. But if he doesn't, I'm on my own out here again. Also he's a skate merch hoarding, mongo pusher so there's that...
>>1954196
Okay.
>>1954196
lol, check out this fucking dork.
You don't get sponsored at shop level for doing 2 minutes edits on a sunday afternoon, you get get sponsored by throwing sick ass parties. Nobody gives a shit about you doing a double backflip down el torro, they want to know if you can live the lifestyle.
>>1954257
Bruh, I'm a filmer...
>>1954257

>Company tries to avoid liability suits
>Hires security guards that try to get people to fall over and hurt themselves on the property.
>>1954196
dude...only way out is simple. That does NOT mean it's necessarily easy. Find a sick ass skater and film him in a way thta makes people want to get on a skateboard.
Rules:
1.Anything that doesn't involve olie tricks must look smooth and stylish (e.g. wallrides, wallies, street/venice plants, freestyle, vert/"tranny")
2. Hard tricks have to look as hard. It has to be believable, people watching have to say "wow, (s)he did that, (s)he actually did, nice, fucking sick".
Nobody gives a shit if the skater is good and/or a stuntman. You have to make people relate. So find a skater who can do that and make them feel comfortable with YOU filming them.
And a personal note, flip tricks on flat are out of place, either freestyle or give it up. Nobody will relate to a person doing hardflips if they can't do a proper airwalk or fingerflip, unless they are jocks. But they will cheer for /ourguy/ if he throws a flip trick in between attractive tricks, because that's not flexing, that's proving that he can stand among the rest and gives hope.
I don't know shit about editing, maybe read the Jamie Thomas interview in Welcome to Hell week on Jenkemm?
Also, /esg/, what are YOU doing to halt Nike's march forward?
>>1954508
There's bad shops, then there's this one really good shop that put out their own video with Randy Ploesser but they have a dedicated filmer.
>>1954783
Like I understand the sentiment but damn that hurt to read.
It's not how good or how stylish you are at all, it's literally just about who you know.
I have two friends, one is an ATV, kills it on street and vert, and is only 14. Favorite trick for a while now is back 3s. Huge bag of tricks, isn't sponsored. Next friend is kinda cool. 17, can cruise on a mini, I witnessed him heelflip Crooks several times. Small selection of tricks, but has personality. Is flowed by Almost.
The only difference is who made the cold calls and emails and who didn't. I can't do it for them.
Also, I'm lowkey over the whole anti corporate thing, but I haven't bought Nikes in a minute so I'mma let you cook
>>1954953
>It's not how good or how stylish you are at all, it's literally just about who you know.

>>1954783
>Also, /esg/, what are YOU doing to halt Nike's march forward?
NOTHING. no matter how hard you try and stop them, they can pay skaters to keep skating and that's a good thing. i still wouldn't buy nikes tho.
>>1954783
>Also, /esg/, what are YOU doing to halt Nike's march forward?
I'm not that bothered to be honest. I feel as though Nike offers something different to other, traditional skate brands and that, rather than Nike pushing other brands out, they're creating another branch of skateboarding. I look fresh af in my white Nike joggers and ice white Janoski slip ons.
>>1955232

>>1954674

>>1956242
>Does it seem logical to you that an entepreneur will turn down the TPP?
Yeah. Especially in today's social climate. People are becoming more and more conscious about where their commodities come from. You can see it in the rise of veganism for example. One notable example of a clothing company who use good ethics as a marketable quality would be American Apparel. Obviously sweatshops will never be totally shunned by consumers, but ethical standards are definitely in vogue atm.

>Nobody will relate to a person doing hardflips if they can't do a proper airwalk or fingerflip, unless they are jocks
Do you even know any skaters irl? Because that isn't even remotely true. Nobody does airwalks, and by fingerflips you better mean fingerflips to tail on tranny and not that freestyle shit. Cause aside from that rare introvert kid who doesn't even skate outside of his house, nobody cares about freestyle fingerflips either.
Freestyles dead, its been dead longer than you've been alive. Everyone watches Mullen and maybe some trending freestyle clip when they start off. But then move on to just caring about street or transition.
For you average street skater, hardflips on flat are much easier to relate to than a "proper" airwalk. And for transition skaters, flatland airwalks aren't relatable either.
>Also, /esg/, what are YOU doing to halt Nike's march forward?

>>1958618
>freestyle shit
you have your opinion, I have mine.
And I do and did freestyle in the skatepark.
Freestyle is not dead, unless you mean its commercial aspect which flies under the radar but most certainly exists. Shellshock, Decomposed and the Never Enough skateshop in Germany are some of the examples.
Aesthetically, I always thought bastardising freestyle with street has always been a thin line to tread; you have to make it look good. The industry shifted its focus a full 180 since the World era, when they tried to make kids/consumers idolise, instead of being inspired. That was the main selling point and it has always been out there for you to see, everybody confirms it.
Even during the 80s, when such a model existed for vert skaters, Tony Hawk would get shit for bringing freestyle ideas to the bowls and ramps, because it had the OPPOSITE effect, it made kids want to try stuff on vert, thus breaking the "muh secret club" of vert skaters who had the same mentality street skaters from the 90s onwards have had.

that's not what I said at all. I specifically mentioned aesthetics and taste. It was an example, the airwalks and fingerflips, that I used to make a point about technicality and mixing freestyle with street. Like, on one hand, you condemn freestyle, then you use tricks from it to do what? At least, make it look like it ahs meaning, make it look good.

Nobody cares about that crap, bar you. Stop trying to call others jocks for not caring about your freestyle bullshit.
>Like, on one hand, you condemn freestyle, then you use tricks from it to do what?
where did I condemn it? and no, I fucking don't use its tricks, I skate transition you kook.

It does look good, and I need nothing to do with freestyle to do that.

how do i know when i need a knew board? do i just ride it until i can't? it's started feeling really soft recently
>>1964921
Sure it's your board at fault? And not e.g. trucks' bolts coming loose. Can you find a reason for why it feels soft, like, can you bend it in some way using your hands, that a fresh board doesn't do?
... it's also true that boards come and go. Buying another and finding out that it's exactly the same as the old one just means you got one in reserve. If you got the money, and the opportunity cost won't kill you... but be sure it's not the trucks or something instead.
>>1964921

Finally one day, I just bit the bullet and went. It was pretty cool. I skated by myself for a while and then eventually I said something to someone about a trick they did.
Now, I've been going twice a week and I'm starting to see some of the same people. It's a process but I think I'm making friends.
Either way, it definitely beats sitting at home by myself all the time. I definitely recommend it.

Why the fuck would you vote Trump as a skater? He wants to give police even more power. If you thought getting busted at a spot sucks now, wait a year and see how bad you fucked up.
Also, why the hell are you telling people at the skate park you voted Trump?

Are Palace decks actually good for skating? I tried a Supreme one and it was heavy and felt bad so I'm inclined to believe hype brand decks are shit and are meant to be hung on walls.
>>1970666
I was in London South Bank for the first time in years the other day and most of the skaters there were black.
I don't have an issue with it though, just weird because I used to never see it before, even in a city like London.
Pretty new skater. I can build up good speed while pushing but as soon as I'm on the deck I lose speed super quickly and stop like a second or two later unless I'm downhill. I'm only like 150lbs and this is on flat ground. When I spin my wheels freely 3 of them spin for like one rotation and stop, the other goes about halfway.
I heard that sometimes they need a "breaking in" period but I definitely need new bearings, right? I did get caught in the rain briefly but I ran home asap and didn't think it would do this much damage so quick.
>>1970898
you have shit tier bearings or the wheels are on too tight
>>1970901
Thanks. Any way in particular to tell which it is without trial and error? Just to save a bit of time
>>1970926
Loosen the axle nut until you can slightly move the wheel back and forth.
Also you're riding on smooth concrete, right?

>>1970937

>>1970898

>>1970750
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIj8NoLIYlQ
>>1970959
when you have spent enough time on a skateboard you 'll be able to cruise with a few pushes on slight inclinated streets, provided your bearings don't have cement for lubrication.
>>1970978
YES that good MJ footy, need more sad boi skaate vids
>>1971007
But would my balance really slow me down that much? I can balance pretty decently and I don't pull one way or the other. My balance definitely isn't as good as people who have been skateboarding more than a way but I think it is just tight wheels/bad bearings, I just tried moving the wheels side to side and there was absolutely no wiggle room.
>>1971041
more than a week*
>>1971041
there has to be the smallest possible room for sensible wiggle. A tiny click click. Maybe even a tad more.
Otherwise, it's worn bearings.
Wait, did you mean that thing with the week literally?
>>1971151
Yeah. Maybe I just haven't broken them in yet? I've been skating every day though, surely it doesn't take long?
Like I said I did get caught in the rain pretty early on and my board was exposed to it for a good 15 mns or so, apparently that can fuck bearings up.
>>1971247
I 've had my board exposed to heavy rain and suprisingly it didn't ruin it (it was a new board though). I think your main problem is the time you 've spent on a board. With better balance, you 'll be able to roll better. You already know if what I 'm saying is true. SO if it isn't balance, it's really worn bearings.
>>1968602
I can do that
>>1971279
Fair enough. I'll keep skating around until it improves then. Is the fact my wheels barely spin freely at all not an issue though?
>>1970666
yeah and it's tight as fuck. hip hop in skate videos (25 second instag clips) is just right.
>>1970926
loosen the nuts on your wheels then spin them with the board up. if it slows down quickly then you need new bearings
>>1973298
I lowkey agree
>>1970775
Can't speak for Supreme but Palace decks are actually pretty good imo, you can gets decks of the same quality cheaper if that's what you care about but if you just like the design/brand then go for it.
>>1973298
I'd rather have Earl Sweatshirt and Illegal Civ than gay shit like Bam Magera and CKY

I had a weird fucking dream where I bought these new trendy "build your own" bearings. It was every part of the bearing shipped to me separately.
I gotta stop sleeping.
>>1981084
I don't have a clue but I bought them for my new set of bearings.
>>1981798
hmmm, seems to be your subconscious is telling you "I dread the day I 'll have to assemble a part of my skateboard".
>>1979905
quasi decks are pretty great. I've had 3 myself and they were probably my favouriest decks. They have very short tails, steep, long noses, and a deep concave. This generally leads to a harder pop and a better flick. It's a really unique shape. Definitely give them a go.
How do i into grinding?
My ollie is fineshould i just start on a low rail or something?
>>1981084
Yes they are superior. I went to NYC once with regular reds, went and got super reds in my setup halfway through skating Manhattan and I was flying. It's so much smoother.

http://www.thrashermagazine.com/articles/who-should-be-the-2016-skater-of-the-year/
well /esg/, who has your vote?
>>1983264
you don't even need to slide your foot to do a weak ollie. The timing between popping and jumping seems to be the biggest issue I see with kids trying to learn ollies at the park. My best advice would be to focus on jumping up off the board at the same time as hyper extending your back ankle to make the board pop off the ground and come up with you. Once you have that you can start to worry about sliding the front foot to level out the board.
here's me for example https://youtu.be/WQDRl7mhEUc?t=4
>tfw haven't skated in 5 years

How come so many skaters are seemingly into shoes? Makes it look as though there's more variation (at least, things that're considered significant; colour of bolts prolly doesn't really count) among skate shoes than there is in other skate gear.

Tell me about it, my skatepark is filled with scooter kids and parents and it's about 50 x 50m. Local skateshop got closed because no one here skates and the prices there were through the fucking roof. $130 for just a deck and $85 for a sweater with the shops name on it, any other branded tshirts or pants were $100 and up. And now the only friends I skated with are all in different cities going to university.

noobie question
Do pros usually pop nollie tricks with the actual nose, or just turn the board around and use the natural tail end?

I 'd think they pop of the nose, you use your switch foot with the nose, that's a general rule of thumb.
>>1989420
>asymmetrical boards
