/eternal skateboarding general/-shoe size does not affect deck

Size 8/9 feet... skated best on 7.5's or 7.75's.
Less weight on the deck the better.
I quit skating like 6 years ago or so, and whenever I get back on my board now it's fucking haaard since I've now got a 8+ inch deck... the weight is silly.

i can't ollie very high but thousands of attempted kickflips have certainly made me more comfortable on my board
and it shows in my ollies
i feel like i should practice my ollies more
but i need to land this kickflip.. for sanity's sake
i came so close today but i didn't land straight enough
felt good
i also worry if my kickflips would be too low to the ground and look stupid
but i don't really mind anymore, flipping the board and landing on it would be a huge accomplishment to me
good job i don't have any friends that pressure me and laugh at me

Hey man I've been skating on and off for years, and only landed a few real lame kickflips in all that time. They are fucking wack to get your head around. Nowadays I can land maybe one in ten kickflips. I find keeping my shoulders parrallel to the board really helps, you can feel the tension on your front foot that will flip the board. Then it's almost as simple as popping an ollie, you sorta just jump behind you a little bit.

Loads of great skaters are that kind of height. 5'6 - 5'10 is pretty much the ideal height for skating. Think about it - your centre of gravity is lower and your limbs get in the way less, making them less prone to injury. It's easier to tuck and roll and your balance will be easier to master. I'm 6'6" and skating is a fucking challenge. Be thankful you aren't on the other side of the height coin when it comes to skating. That said, being tall rules in most other aspects of life...

Just started skating legit a week ago. I ride every day after work for at least an hour in the parking lot of my apartment building. Practice manuals and ollies alternatingly. This Indian dude that walks for hours every day has taken to coming into the parking loop that I skate in now when he has never cut through before. It's becoming clear that he gets to position himself so that I'll run into him if I don't pay attention just to be a pain in the ass. Anyway, keep at it. I'm shit at ollies but I can pull off manuals across 1.5 parking spaces 1/3 times now. It's all about repetition.

Bought a voltage fireball when I was first starting out, but then I snapped the tail and stopped skating after dislocating my knee.

I've read through the brand sticky and was wondering what you guys thought about pre-completed boards? Or is it really necessary to construct one myself?

I've never skated before but my city is much more skateboard friendly than it is for bikes, plus the portability of a skateboard is really attractive to me. Would mostly be using it for transport of paved surfaces but learning some basic tricks would be cool too.

size 8 decks are good if you don't know what to get. more than likely if you do change sizes, you'll probably go up a size. in that case, trucks with an 8 inch axle will be a better choice. bigger wheels will make for a smoother ride, and the kind of mounting hardware doesn't matter

I even tried a pair of Avenues for the added benefit of having lightweight leaf-springs giving me a boost.

On the real, though, you just need to visualize it, which is hard since you've never landed one.

can you pop shuvit? if so, do this:

every night, as you're falling asleep, imagine popping the board up and flicking your front foot to get it spinning. And then imagine watching the board complete the rotation and stomping your feet down onto it. Imagine the way the pavement feels rolling under the board. Imagine the way the impact of the tail feels. The way the grip feels on your shoe. Imagine the arch of the board popping and leveling out.

Once you can imagine it perfectly and clearly, you'll get it.

Not to longboard bash, but I think they're a bad idea because they limit you to just cruising and anytime you want to go up a curb you have to hop off and pick it up. They do make that up with their speed but with learning to ollie on a regular (or cruiser) board you can essentially move from location to location without having to get off your board. Not to mention having the option to learn tricks if you decide you want to.

I have 54mm wheels on my skate and I can guarantee you they are not big enough for cruising, unless your streets are fucking perfect.
Go for 58mm or even 60mm and raisers if you want to cruise around. I would stay high duro, 90a are already grippy as fuck. Lower than that doesn't make a lot of sense on a skate deck imho.

i learned to ollie using a setup that had risers. eventually got curious as to what the setup would feel like without risers and took them off. ended up liking it better without them.

i kind of feel like the risers dampened my "groundfeel" too much. not sure if that's a common term, but if boardfeel is feeling your board through your shoes, i guess i'm using groundfeel to describe feeling the surface your riding on through your setup (and even through your shoes to an extent). so, soft wheels/risers/thick cupsoles = low groundfeel and hard wheels/no risers/thin vulcs = higher groundfeel.

in any case i've definitely adopted a less is more approach to skate setups and risers seem to be an unnecessary accessory to me. but hey, i've been seeing some people putting rails back on their boards, so maybe accessories are coming back.
