This is a subjective notion that is most likely fueled by the fact that AJ was still very new im the company and the ambivalence of the crowd audibly rejecting Roman played a role as well. Add to the fact that Roman relied on explosive spots rather than building a narrative on the mat (like Dean did tonight) it boggles the mind to read that Roman got better matches. Dean actually wrestled the best match of his reign tonight and it's a shame he didn't retain since I thought his performance warranted one more month but I suppose AJ being champion is a great idea anyway. I think a lot of high spots in a match can work, ie, Cena vs AJ or Rock vs Austin, but they usually leave a lot to be desired because you need the right story for it to not feel cheap as fuck. I just can't watch guys get hit by 5 superkicks in a match and kick when I watched based ass Shawn Michaels never have to use it more than twice and have exciting matches in a myriad of different ways.

So yeah, having a catalogue of different styles is nice, but I think the best guys have more of a tone that they can loosen and tighten up depending on who they're wrestling against. It's what separates your AJs, Jerichos and Bryans from your Cenas(cena isn't a bad worker, but every match he has is either all about the high spots or focused around him getting or not getting the AA off. He's really good at it, though), Foleys, and Reigns. Bray is another guy who has to hit his spots every match and doesn't do much outside of that.

It's why guys like AJ, Bryan, and Jericho are so good though. They can work your style and make you look better while making themselves look like free cake. There are so few people in the history of the business who have been able to work multiple styles and generally deliver, especially guys who were in WWE main events. I think only HBK, Jericho, Bryan, Taker, (to an extent) Bret Hart, Angle, Benoit, and somewhat Punk (r.I.p.) rank like that and also were able to elevate other people.

I forgot RVD and Eddie and didn't add Kid because the bulk of his career is outside WWE even though he was really good when he was there. I haven't watched much Tiger Mask II and Steamboat is weird. He's really good and always had good matches, but I don't think he could play any role outside of the face role he did, in or outside the ring. Can't take away from his work at all, but most of his stuff is really samey, to me. I put him in the same space as Flair. God tier if you were willing to work their style, but very much limited to it.

So often I feel people decide how good a match is before they watch it, based on who they like most.

Cena vs AJ was heavily hyped, but I don't think it was that great a Cena match or an AJ match. Obviously not bad, still very good, but those guys have both done better, recently too.

Deano has been improving as well, but he rightly earned a stigma for phoning in matches a little while back, so people don't give him much time.
