Ozeki Goeido:
After the Grand Sumo Tournament in March 2016, Goeido finds himself again as Ozeki Kadoban for the fourth time in his career.

Ozeki Kotoshogiku:
After the Grand Sumo Tournament in July 2015, Kotoshogiku is Ozeki Kadoban for the sixth time.

< Goeido & Kotoshogiku >
Following Terunofuji in the last tournament, Kotoshogiku and Goeido are the 135th and the 136th Ozeki Kadoban since the 1969 July Grand Sumo Tournament. Furthermore, it is the 16th time since July 1969, that two or more Ozeki Kadoban are faced with a possible demotion in the same tournament, like Terunofuji and Goeido in the March tournament of this year.

Sekiwake Debut Takayasu:
Takayasu is the first Rikishi from the Tagonoura Beya to make his Sekiwake debut since the present Shisho inherited Naruto Beya (established by former Yokozuna Takanosato) and renamed it on November 8th, 2011. He is the fourth Rikishi from former Naruto Beya after Wakanosato, Takanowaka and most recently Kisenosato - who had been promoted to the Sekiwake rank in the 2009 March Grand Sumo Tournament.
Takayasu is the eighth Sekiwake debutant from Ibaraki Prefecture post WWII, following Kisenosato.
>>
>>1730843
I've missed you, sumo. I'm going to watch EBI on one tab, the basho on another, and the UFC on my tablet
>>
Sekiwake Debut Takarafuji:
Takarafuji is the fourth Rikishi to debut as Sekiwake from Isegahama Beya since the present Shisho inherited Ajigawa Beya on the 26th of April 1993 which has since changed its name in 2007. The previous Rikishi- Terunofuji - was promoted in the 2015 March Grand Sumo Tournament. Following Aminishiki who was promoted in September 2007, Takarafuji is the 15th Rikishi from Aomori Prefecture post WWII to reach the Sekiwake rank.
He is also the 23rd Rikishi to commence sumo during his student years, similar to Yoshikaze who was promoted in the 2016 January Grand Sumo Tournament. Additionally, he is the second former Kinki University student to achieve this; the first being Asashio, who was promoted in the 1980 July Grand Sumo Tournament.

< Takayasu & Takarafuji >
Takayasu and Takarafuji are the 158th and 159th Rikishi to make their Sekiwake debuts post WWII, following Kaisei and Tochinoshin who were promoted in the previous tournament. It is the first time that there are two Sekiwake debuts in three consecutive tournaments in a long time. The previous record is four consecutive debuts of two Sekiwake between the spring tournament in 1937 and the summer tournament in 1938.
>>
Komusubi Kaisei:
Kaisei has returned to the rank he held in May 2016 after two tournaments. It is his third consecutive tournament in the Sanyaku ranks.

Komusubi Return Tochiozan:
Tochiozan has been promoted to Komusubi, the rank he held in March 2016 after 3 tournaments.

Makuuchi Division Debut Chiyoshoma:
Chiyoshoma is the first Rikishi from Kokonoe Beya to make his Makuuchi Division debut since the present Shisho inherited it on the second of August 2016. The previous one was Chiyomaru in the 2014 March Grand Sumo Tournament. He is the 24th Rikishi from Mongolia and the 47th foreigner to make his Makuuchi Division debut, the previous being Seiro, who made his debut in the 2015 July Grand Sumo Tournament.

Makuuchi Division Debut Amakaze:
Amakaze is the fifth Rikishi from Oguruma Beya to make his Makuuchi Division debut since the present Shisho established it on March 23, 1987. Previously, it was Kimikaze in May 2012. He is the fifth Rikishi from Kagawa Prefecture to make his Makuuchi Division debut post WWII, following Kotoyuki who was promoted in the 2013 January Grand Sumo Tournament.
>>
Makuuchi Division Return Homarefuji:
Homarefuji returns to Makuuchi Division after four tournaments, overcoming his recent demotion in January 2016.

Makuuchi Division Return Gagamaru:
Gagamaru returns to the Makuuchi Division after two tournaments.

Makuuchi Division Return Kyokushuho:
Kyokushuho returns to Makuuchi Division after two tournaments.

Hakuho is out.

From Kintamayama:
>Indeed, he is out. Left knee injury, right toe injury, right side arthritis-4 weeks to heal is the official diagnosis. "I feel that when I return, I will become strong again.." he said. Regarding Kisenosato's tsuna run: "I can't say anything about that.. I'd like him to take advantage of the opportunity. This time I will not be fighting him-I will be rooting for him!!" "I apologize to the fans..I did not want to cause any bother, but I will be away for the whole basho. I am looking forward to participating in the Aki Jungyo and the November tournament after concentrating on receiving treatment!!" he said.

Tribute post for former yokozuna and 31-time champion Chiyonofuji who sadly died of cancer shortly after last basho.

>Chiyonofuji won 53 straight bouts — the third-longest streak since the start of the Showa Era — through the Kyushu tourney in November 1988 and in 1990 became the first wrestler to win 1,000 bouts.

Some great crowd reactions. Nearly all old people though. Do young people not follow Sumo?
>>
>>1742920
Ive never seen an ozeki give up a match as Teruno and Kise did

Also, dammit kakuryu...
>>
>>1745861
>Do young people not follow Sumo?
I guess they follow it on TV/WWW.

>also Kisenosato dun-goofed hard.
>>
>>1745861
"Only old people and foreigners" as the saying goes. Young people aren't big on Sumo in Japan, but beyond that the matches take place during the workday there.
>>
>>1745861
Part of it might be that according to Jason's Sumo channel young people just got back into school the past few weeks. Also it's taking place on a weekday, people are in school and working. The weekend bouts are always more popular
>>
Day 2

Harumafuji-Yoshikaze goes straight into the candidates for best match of the year
>>
>>1746814
>but beyond that the matches take place during the workday there.
considering its 15 consecutive days the matches take place on both workday sand weekends
>>
>>1747167
I meant that they happen from like 9am - 5pm, but yeah the weekends have a more diverse crowd
>>
Aoiyama is a joke. Crap wrestler. Just a lump of fat.
>>
>Arawashi's shitatenage win.
Nothing short of amazing. It should be standard showing to people who think sumo wrestlers are just fat.

>Takayasu strong.
Rooting for him hard.

>Takarafuji gives up way too early.
I guess he is back to his lucky but average rikishi form. Last basho was an exception then.

>Kakuryu
Does not look his former self. Maybe he was pressured into participating before complete injury recovery given Hakuho's drop?
>>
How is the egyptian guy doing?
>>
>>1748464
1-1
>>
>>1748079
youre dead wrong, hes probably the only one of the big fat guys who displays some great technique
>>
Was Ura's match today a good example of the difficulty he's going to face with some of the largers guys moving forward? Sure he got the win but it looked like he struggled a bit
>>
>>1748459
takarafuji looking really disappointing after last basho.

on the other hand, gagamaru is looking really different than usual (for the good). I think hes around 196kg now and he looks to be actually wrestling instead of just trying to brute force through like he used to. I say this despite his loss vs sokokurai today, but thats kinda because he played right into the china man's strengths.
>>
>>1748464
His biggest hurdle was probably Ura who he faced on day 1 and lost to.
>>
>>1748900
Ma boy Gagamaru seems to have taken that demotion to heart. If he can keep doing what he was doing in his first match then i think we can expect a solid outing from him this basho. So excited for him
>>
>>1748464
Pretty sure he's in Juryo this basho.
>>
>>1751399
He's apparently been doing extra training every night and working hard on getting his weight down bit. Seems like it's working!
>>
Day 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJo4fnpoe48
>>
>>1752344
>that ending
Very nice, I like when things don't go as planned.
>>
>>1748814
He will have to gain weight as he rises in the banzuke and that will force him to be less nimble and thus concentrate more on technique.
>>
>TOKYO — In a surprise news conference the Nihon Sumō Kyōkai announced today that a new rikishi rank will be created going forward. The new rank will be Eternal Ozeki and Kisenosato is poised to be the first recipient.

that was a great day of sumo. hope the rest of the basho follows up.

he's been a favorite of mine as well since last september basho when he got a double kinboshi and went 11-4 as M1

I just miss when he used to wear a red Mawashi so I could call him big red, I guess he's the green giant now.
>>
>>1757914
i always thought that green was pretty fitting, considering when i hear yoshi i still think of vidya game yoshi.

>>
Day 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_gUXmtZm14

Give the yusho to Okinoumi already
>>
I think Harumafuji will just keep winning slow and steady and the Japs will inevitably lose a few along the way. Nothing to see here, Mongolia wins as usual.
>>
>>1767755
Probably the case, but it's been fun so far anyway
>>
If Goeido win tournamet, he will became Yokozuna?
>>
>>1768446
No even close. The norm was 2 consecutive bashos. Now it seems that also 3 outstanding bashos will suffice but at least you have to win one of those (preferably the last one).
If Goeido wins this basho and the next then he will be promoted for sure baring some bullshit by the elder of the sumo association about whether he upholds the dignity of the rank (I can't see this happening).
However Goeido has not a very reliable record and once you are a Yokozuna you are expected to retire if you perform poorly for a time. Given this it may not be in Goeido's best interest to reach Yokozuna just yet. Maybe it will be better for him to wait until one or more of the current Yokozunas retire. Then again he is quite old so the opportunity may not present itself in the future.
>>
>>1768505
*elders
>>
Goeido is barely good enough for Ozeki.

Goeido as Ozeki 99-86-1/184 (13 basho)
Kisenosato as Ozeki 300-126/425 (29 basho)
Terunofuji as Ozeki 57-45-9/101 (8 basho)
Kotoshogiku as Ozeki 241-168-32/405 (30 basho)

so far I will say ranking goes

1. Okinoumi
2. Takayasu
3. Goeido

then Harumafuji and Kisenosato followed closely by Mitakeumi. Then Endo, Kotoyuki and basically the rest of the 5-2.

>>
Slow day at the office led to me reading sumo history and two questions.
1. Who was the worst yokozuna
2. Why doesn the sumo association just give Raiden the yokozuna designation posthumously? They did so with the 1st 4 yokozuna
>>
>>1730843
It's hilariously retarded how they have this ring elevated with no mats around the edges or anything.
>>
>>1767755
this is what I'm hoping for
>>
dont see how goeido can win vs the rest of t he ozeki/yokozuna. and thus i dont see how harumafuji isn't winning this basho.
>>
>>1780001
Worst Yokozuna in the modern era is probably Futagahuro, he didn't deserve the promotion and his performance was definitely sub-par. Beyond that though he was also shameful out of the ring and known for beating his underlings fiercely enough that they refused to server under him.

As for Raiden, I'm not sure. There is ongoing skepticism about a lot of those early records though and Raiden in particular.

>>1780207
Statistics on where injuries happened were posted on sumoforum a while back and it's pretty rare for an injury to happen outside the dohyo. It's a lot less dangerous than it seems, and keep in mind there also used to be 4 huge pillars to crack your head on as well.
>>

>>
>Takayasu still strong
This basho has been quite amazing for him. Most bouts were quite contested and yet he won by patience and strength. I have no doubt he will get the Kanto-sho for sure.
>>
Why the fuck is Tochinoshin always trying to lift niggas out of the ring? I get it, dude like yoriki but it doesnt ever work. It's like Gagamaru always just going brute force oshidashi, tho even he has been switching it up this basho
>>
>>1785731
Well he is trying to use his height in his favor but as you say it ain't working for him.
He should go back to using a full set of techniques. He got a much better result and was awarded the Gino-sho.
See his Natsu 2016 performance for contrast to this basho.
>>
>>1783836
Lel
But seriously those missed slaps were painful to watch and he just looked very outclassed and even a bit desperate.
>>
Poor Amakaze. He literally got slapped out of the dohyo.
>>
>>1786388
I chuckled pretty hard at that. So many fantastic matches today and poor Amakaze gets the ever-loving shit slapped out of him
>>
>>1786388
>>1787040

I'm bitter as he'll that Osunaarashi received the biggest drop in rank handed out since 1770 for being absent with an injury, and Amakaze got one of the biggest jumps in a long time without deserving it.

I hope Amakaze gets slapped into oblivion forever, is what I'm saying.
>>

>>
>>1787915
My boy Mitakeumi, he is making a larger splash than I thought he was going to make.
>>
>>1787915
>Takayasu
Well that was scary. I sincerely thought he was going to lose badly. The slaps weren't doing shit to Harumafuji. It the end somehow he managed to dance on the bales the same way Harumafuji did a few days ago (ok maybe with not so much grace).
>>
Can someone beat Goeido already. Please and thanks
>>
>>1788777
Up to harumafuji and kakuryu now
>>
>>1787981
Yes and also very yes. He is the Hakuho of choking and im sort of bummed about it
>>1788777
I have full confidence that Harumafuji will out wrestle him, Goeido is all about that power game and Harumafuji aint going to play that shit
>>
>>1788848
At this point we need two people to take out Goeido. Harumafuji beating him would just put him at x-1 while everyone is at x-2
>>
>>1788863
Well, this might just be Goeido's Basho.
>>

This is one whacky basho. Who would've thought that the 7-1 Okinoumi would still be trying to find his 8th win on the 14th day. Shoutouts to Aoiyama for being the only european to kachikoshi this basho. Hopefully Gagamaru wins another bout in the next two days. Would be a shame to see him back in Juryo again.

Kisenosato on SUICIDE WATCH
>>
>>1795580
Dude fucked up majorly. What do you think caused him to choke so badly? I mean those first 2 loses were ridiculous.
>>1794270
This whole basho has been absolutely bizzare. How does Goeido go undefeated when he was just facing elimination this basho, going over Kisenosato AND Harumafuji? As always I too am pulling for Gagamaru. He started off so strong but it just feels like he's back into bulldozing his opponents or nothing at all

this is hard to watch dude. Someone posted that hes been around for a year. I'd say hes around 17-18? That seems like the age that most people get into sumo divisions. That means he probably missed some of his education to pursue whatever dream he thinks he can achieve. I feel REALLY bad for him. H
>>
>>1795786
I do not understand this. Like I could understand a rikishi being on the smaller side but still having that toukon but this guy doesnt even seem to try. So in addition to being like a dollar thirty soaking wet he seems just really bummed out and not into it. Id love some more background on him
>>
>>1795801
I just hope he isn't being used by his stable. "Yea you'll be a great rikishi one day just clean the house first!"
>>
>>1795853
K I did some "research" aka googled his name.
Well it seems hes one ONCE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DNsbVFZUyk
and there it is...
Hes in the Shikihide Heya
http://www.sumo.or.jp/EnSumoDataSumoBeya/detail?id=17
Welp, this heya sucks. But I guess someone has to fill out the lower divisions. Funny enough there seems to be another person thats worse than him in there.
>>
>>1795866
More research

Hattori (17, the name of a famous ninja): after Sodachizakari again one for Shikihide who has to drink to pass - but not much: he was 66.9 in the morning and drank 2 liters of water, ending up with 70kg. Because of his grandparents he started watching sumo in primary school 2nd year and became a fan of Baruto. In middle school he was in the track and fields club when he decided to enter. He didn't enter high school but did weight training at home. His parents think he rather should become a gyoji or yobidashi.
When watching sumo in the kokugikan he got his picture taken by Shikihide-oyakata and became acquainted - that led to his entering.
The oyakata: "He's thin but is motivated." His shikona is planned as Hattorizakura.

Apparently the Heya has a complete open door policy, they'll take anyone who wants to try Sumo regardless of how bad they are. Kind of cool that they'll let anyone join, but that poor kid doesn't look motivated to me.
>>
>>1795908
In his one win to that kid posted above he looked like he had some fight in him but in the other bouts he looks downright frightened or like his parents are forcing it upon him. But i tend to agree that i do like this open door policy they have even if it's just for feel good reasons
>>
>>1795866
is that his mom clapping and cheering I wonder, cute
>>
>>1795706

Why don't they have weight classes at the lower divisions? Imagine the speed and explosiveness of a 200lbs division.

The wrestlers could focus more on technique rather than bulking up.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0n3gN-WmbgM

THAT ABSOLUTE MADMAN DID IT
>>
>>1796617
Lack of weight classes is just part of the weirdness of Sumo, it's too traditional to ever change now.

Little guys like Mainoumi can absolutely take on big guys with the right techniques too, which is great to watch
>>
>>1792968
because he is a supreme shit non-ozeki who got lucky. Now he may do a Futahaguro 2.0
>>

he's not going to be promoted to yokozuna relax

>>
>>1796876
He hasn't put up the numbers for the promotion yet, if his next tournament is a win or a runner up though, it'll be interesting to see what the committee says
>>
>>1797204
Two consecutive Yusho is the established standard of the current Yokozunas (Kakuryu got a 14-1 Jun-Yusho followed by a Yusho and got promoted). It will be scandalous if Goeido wins next basho and does not get promoted.

>tfw after tomorrow there wont be any daily comfy sumo threads till november
>>
I don't really follow sumo, but I've been watching a few Japanese tv shows and have seen this guy a lot. Was he ever that good and did he deserve yokozuna?
>>
>>1797568
His name is Konishki. Hes a hawaiian-samoan guy that was a wrestler back in the 80s-90s. He reached Ozeki and was able to get a couple of yushos. He fell off really hard at the end of his career and ended in the low m10ish rankings. Was he good enough to be a yokozuna? Prob not. Theres a lot of talk about which era of sumo is better, and theres obviously no way to know. Most people are at the consensus that people that were ozeki back in the day wouldn't be that good in the current day.
>>
>goeido wins with one hand down
>>
>>1797434
I mean the standard doesn't really matter in the end, it's the commitee's decision. Even with two Yusho I'm not sure Goeido would deserve it, it's too sudden. His performance has not been consistent enough.

I'm almost certain they would promote him anyway though
>>
First time watching the whole basho. What's with the arrows?

this was my first tournament. That was great. I can't wait so long for the next one.

Woops, I mean 15 obviously.

>>1799180
Goes way back to the Edo period. A bow, bowstring and arrow are awarded to the winning Ozeki, Komusubi and Sekiwake. As far as I know the exact origin isn't known.

The good thing about sumo is the "off season" isn't as long as other sports. Once it is time for another basho your excitement is already at a peak, I can't imagine waiting six months for my favorite sport to start again.

>>

>the state of Terunofuji
he did not look great this basho and that henka really summed things up well. Kisenosato did not look amused or surprised by that henka at all lol
>>
Probably gonna be Komusubi Aoiyama and Mitakeumi next basho. Sekiwake Okinoumi and Takayasu. Hopefully Osunaarashi takes the break inbetween bashos to heal up. Its sad that such a promising foreign wrestler is so injury ridden.
>>
>>1799435
nvm forgot that takekaze did well too, idk whose gonna be komusubi
>>
>>1799468
jk again im double stupid takekaze is m9 not m3.
mitakeumi, tamawashi, and aoiyama are in the best positions for komusubi. Unless they want to drop takarafuji only one division instead of to around m1-2ish,

>suspended
what
>>
>>1802117
He admitted involvement on the 2010 illegal baseball gambling scandal. He was lucky to only get a one basho suspension. He was joined by a bunch of other rikishi on the suspension. Some got demoted and I believe some were spelled from sumo altogether.
>>
>>1802117
>>1802317
Sokokurai (M11e) got suspended then banned from sumo but won a court battle due to unfair dismissal and thus was reinstated by the sumo association.
>>
>>1802840
chinaman always gets his way
>>
>>1799336
Sumo schedule is perfect honestly, long enough breaks that I'm excited when it's back but it doesn't overstay it's welcome either.
>>
>>1798528
2 yushos as ozeki is a lock in
>>
>>1804499
I'm sure they're eager to have a japanese yokozuna and if he yushos again he's sure to be promoted, but looking at his record it's hard to imagine he'd be anything other than a disappointment as one. This yusho was so unexpected and uncharacteristic for him.
>>
>>1804635
Now to start circulating rumors of doping, drugs and witchcraft being part of his success.
>>
>>1804653
This is a scandalous thing to say, but they're probably all doping as there is no testing.
>>
>>1804775
Doping and steroids, and the steroid belly never shows because they are already fat. Brilliant.
