Because AJ Styles is already a huge name. He became one of the top merch sellers in WWE within a month for example. He draws well at house shows too. Also, he is getting older now, so he may not have a whole lot of years left (depending how his body holds up obviously), so WWE are milking the cow while they can.

He'll be 42 then. We'll see if he resigns for another 2 or 3 year deal. I don't know about full-time, but I imagine if they offer him a part-time deal with dosh he'll still be wrestling.

I think this is the reason they paired him with Jericho at the start. Cool Dad is a one man NXT program and has Vince's respect. If they didn't need Joe to bolster the NXT brand, he'd be doing the same thing.
