Is this an ego problem?
I'm fairy athletic and strong, graduated college a year ago and I'm working. I took up BJJ a couple months ago and I'm having great fun with it.
But one thing that turns me off a little bit is the dick-waving at the higher belts.
Yes, if a blue/purple/brown/black belt tells me anything on the mat, i will shut up and listen and show respect. But I notice there's a slight hierarchy that goes on outside the bjj gym. If we're all getting drinks or dinner after a week of training I'll definitely notice the "pecking order" of who dominated group social dynamics and it lines up between belts. Everyone does get along, but generally White belts will rag and banter with other white belts but won't do that to higher belts while higher belts will banter and rag with everyone.
Personally, I think this is just childish and culty- high school cliques /fraternity hazing is over. On the mat the higher belt is the master, sure. At a bar? You're just another guy, not that I'm gonna be a dick to you but I'm not gonna kiss your feet cause you're purple.
Is this normal?
nigga its because the higher belts have known each other for a very long so they are friendlier with each other because of that. Most of the white belts will drop out, the ones that make it to blue will have been around longer and by then the higher up will get to know him better because he stuck around
Because the majority of white belts quit.

Yes, BJJ is full of belt whores.
It's just another Gracie shilling method to make themselves look like godly figures.
