These shitposters, of course, are offended by anyone taking wrestling the least bit seriously. They want it to be something uncool, so that wrestling fans feel awkward defending it. That is why Bret so perfectly represents opposition to them. He took wrestling seriously, and he made wrestling something that got mainstream acceptance. If that happens again, then places where wrestling is discussed online will no longer be dominated by negativity.

Following the rock and wrestling boom's end in drug and steroid scandals, wrestling was considered a dubious pleasure at best. Most people thought it was something dirty and disreputable, an industry that lacked legitimacy and thrived on dirty halls, dirty money, and dirty doctors. Yet only a few years later, wrestling would enjoy its greatest height of popularity, thanks to an athlete who oozed legitimacy coming to the fore. That man was Bret Hart.

Wrestling's height of popularity starts in '95, with Bret at the peak of his powers. For six years, Monday night wrestling draws millions of viewers. Then in 2000, Bret is injured and retires. From that point on, ratings decline. Nobody else meets the dates as cleanly as Bret.

For Austin, he's basically nobody in '95, trying to work out his gimmick in ECW. He rises to stardom in '97 (thanks in part to being put over by Bret) but he's still working in the ring as ratings start to fall. Nothing against Austin, but he couldn't make wrestling seem legitimate the way that Bret could.

The Rock, though very entertaining, fits the boom in wrestling's popularity even worse than Austin. He hadn't even debuted in '95, and still works some dates today.

Sorry if you've been taken in by the narrative spun by Shawnetty and friends, but Bret saved wrestling.

It doesn't. You're treating WWF's ratings as representative of the industry as a whole. It's true that they were the industry leader, and the legitimacy of their product affected the way that wrestling as a whole was seen - that's why Bret was so important. But wrestling takes off in '95, not '97, and Austin's hardly in the picture that year.
