So why the fuck does he have so many sources in the business? Apparently, he didn't wrestle himself...but I don't know how true that is. Did he own a promotion? Is he literally just some guy who knows people?
he did it before anybody else did and built relationships

It was slim pickings as far as credible journalist who wanted to cover pro wrestling back then. He dominated the market.

Nowadays he knows jack shit outside of WWe and ufc
He doesn't have that many sources anymore.
He called that WCW 1-800 number
He succeeded in the market back when no one else gave a crap about doing journalism in pro wrestling.
Nowadays he's a total hack who literally makes up shit on the fly. His credibility from the past keeps him relevant.
Journalism in reliant on people being willing to share information. People in wrestling are always willing to give dirt because most wrestlers are loudmouth assholes. He was able to capitalize on this before anyone else (other than Heyman) and so that's how he has so many sources.

He actually worked for WWF briefly in the 80s, sending them reports on Japan. But I don't think he had that much contact with the offices or wrestlers in that position.
Really he just found a few connections who would talk at the beginning, and wrestlers who were being left in the dark by carnies starting following him for news. Bret Hart hated dirtsheets during his WWF career, but after the screwjob he made contact with him and gave him his story.

he gives good head

He doesn't. He's a hack and knows nothing.
