He never proved he was good enough on his own without a crutch like the briefcase of the Authority. He was a coward because he was afraid that he wasn't good enough -- that without the Shield, he was nothing.

Beating Roman at MitB gave him a much needed boost of confidence. He beat Roman, the powerhouse of the Shield, clean as a sheet, in the middle of the ring. It made him believe that he IS good enough to stand on his own two feet. That's why he was ready to face Ambrose head-on.

Unfortunately, Ambrose decided to give Seth a taste of his own medicine instead.

Nah he's still pretty chickenshit. Same character. He just beat Roman at MiTB because Roman got popped for wellness, and hasn't really wrestled much since, so he hasn't had much chance to re-cement his chickenshit status.
