He wasn't trying to hurt him, you idiot, he was trying to win. It was a shoot, for-real amateur wrestling match. Just like in MMA, you don't put someone in a submission hold because you want to break their arm, you put someone in a submission move because you want them to tap out so you can win. If he were trying to hurt him he wouldn't have released the hold the second the bell rang and tried to shake his hand afterwards. And he didn't "allow himself to get pinned" because you can see he raises his shoulders at the two count, which the referee ignored.

I always thought this guy was an asshole just because everyone else simplified the events to "oh, he used a real hold in a pro wrestling match and almost broke Kurt's arm" but after actually looking into it myself that's not even close to what actually happened.

I can't fault puder OR Angle for anything that happened, because the whole segment reeked of Vince and his carny fuck mindset. Why the fuck would you put Kurt Angle, a hyper-competitive maniac of a wrestler who constantly puts his pride above his health and well-being, in a situation where he is fighting multiple opponents (whose fighting backgrounds he knows little to nothing about) in back to back, loosely-defined shoot fights without even considering the possibility of him losing? Meanwhile, you have Puder who has mma experience but no idea of what's actually expected of him when he gets in the ring with Angle, so he does what he is permitted to do in this loosely defined shoot fight and actually tries to win.

that's a really awkward position to watch pro wreslters work in a match, they have to work it really well to make it look believable and the ref generally helps them by keep putting his hands between the mat and the shoulders of the guy getting pinned to make us understand he's aware of what's happening, that's what I've seen most of the time.

This whole Angle - Puder was a clusterfuck situation and it wouldn't surprise me that Angle told the ref to end it, since it was the right moment to do it, or in any case, he lifts his body and put weight on Puder to look like he's attempting the pin even if his arm is about to get snapped and the ref saw a the right moment to end the match.

A really stupid situation that could've been avoided. Puder was greener than the greenest of all time so blaming him for the whole deal is kinda lame specially considering tough enough in those times was pretty hostile towards the competitors and in moments like that they gave them a chance to shine and retribute some humiliation. Maybe in his mind Angle was gonna tap, he wasn't thinking prowrestling-wise those moments.
