Hey /asp/. I've decided to train me some knockdown karate, because I used to do tkd and I want to do something similar but, y'know, less daycare oriented.
I have these two schools near me. They're both give or take equivalent in price and the transport to either is the same:

I'm leaning towards Garry o'neil because he seems to have more of a competitive record. Is there anything else I should consider? I have no idea what determines "quality" amongst the different kyo branches.
Also, given that /asp/ is so chock full of wressling, this can serve as a knockdown karate general.

I wish there was a kyokushin karate dojo near me :( Id love to do karate but the only karate dojo within 100 miles is wado-ryu

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with wado-ryu as a style

It's the sparring that puts me off, it's point based isn't it? I do bjj currently but I've always loved the idea of karate
>>1447130
Yeah, wikipedia says it's shotokan with other non-goju-ryu influences but with jujiutsu principles

I'd maybe try a class and see how it goes. Point sparring worked for machida i guess so it can't be that bad

They both look fine. Try a class at each and see which one you click with more. If you like the people you're going to show up to class a few extra times a year and it'll add up.
Both gyms have instructors who are former fighters, so what it comes down to is which one has a coaching style you relate to more. If one had a coach who had never competed and one had a coach who had it'd be a no-brainer but we can immediately find records and videos for both instructors.
Let us know how it turns out.

I've got a few kyo and shido places 40-50 miles away.
Are there any good knockdown karate schools in the new england area? It's hard to find one with all these fitness karate centers and shotokan schools.

>Knockdown Karate
It's pretty much a slugfest with some tricks like close range head kicks and leg kick combos. So Kyokushin Karate is pretty much a slugfest. It's glorified gangster thug street punching.
To make it work, we don't need head punches. We just need a larger time limit, so we can get a more technical game, a more beautiful game.

Good on you. When people kick more in knockdown karate, they're usually more technical fighters instead of fighters that do more of the already a lot standing and trading punches.
Revolutionary New Knockdown Karate Rules:
- three 5min rounds
- punch = 1 point
- kick = 1.5 points
- elbow = 1 point
- knee = 1 point
- sweep = 2 points and 0.5 knockdown points
- Knockdown = 1 knockdown point
- pushing is allowed
