If you're still in high school and serious about getting better, join an offseason team. I've been playing for years and just started coaching recently and it's impossible to develop your skills without playing in the offseason. Most importantly, keep in shape through swimming and dry-land workouts. Good luck, good to see a fellow wopo player on /asp/

I don't know of any competitive adult leagues in my area but if that's an option for you then definitely go for it. We mostly have master's water polo teams that have casual scrimmages amongst themselves.

Is it true water polo can get violent? Is that something common or does it depend on the team?

Water Polo is a very rough sport, but there is a mutual understanding between opposing players that there will be a lot of contact and people will get pushed and kicked. However, things can go sour when a player or team gains a reputation for playing dirty or being disrespectful.

Are those types of players common at college level or is it a high school thing? You had any experience with teams like that?

Individual dirty players aren't uncommon at a college level but the teams with reputations for over-aggression are most contained to the high school level.

I played for a couple year in high school, dropped it for plain ol swimming in uni.

Is it true for anyone of you that the womens leagues were more aggressive than the mens?

Because for me, the male league was relatively civil, with the regular pulling and attempted drowning and stuff, but the womens leagues were vicious. I had a friend who had to constantly buy new swimsuits and wear two layers every match because of how often it was literally torn away by sharpened nails.

Nails get checked before games for men, not sure about women though.
