Eh, maybe if he'd started training to actually fight from the start and hadn't gone into such a physically draining career as pro wrestling. He's had meh showings, even if he won, against absolute nobodies. He's also already 36 which is "consider retirement" age in MMA. He probably had a better shot than most at transitioning to a halfway sort of decent MMA career a few years ago.

40 is pretty much cutoff date, same with any combat sport. Only really legit fighters and straight up gifted dudes get to around that age and can keep competing at a non-embarrasing level. You'll see many go past that date and try to keep clawing at the sport to maybe some success at C and D tier promotions using whatever name value those dudes have for a quick buck.

Nakamura could do that and crush a can a year in Japan, but why risk himself and his pro wrestling career? Though if we're talking hypotheticals, if he'd actually worked a light pro wrestling schedule and trained to fight legit seriously from an early age? He probably could've made places at least in Japan.

The question was if he'd be a decent MMA competitor. Right now? No, for the reasons I gave. He took a few fights against nobodies, one of which he lost against a 30 year old man going into his second ever pro fight who now has a starling 5-4 record. Hardly a serious foray.

If he'd actually focused on training legitimately rather than splitting time between a pro wrestling schedule and preparing for little freakshow events done to satisfy Inoki's "pro wrestlers can fight" boner? Then he might've gone places if a decent camp capitalized on his physical gifts.
