You probably know Yokozuna was never an actual sumotori, but you might not know Akebono who was an actual Yokozuna did participate in WWE after his retirement from Sumo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KmMvfdidvQ

Unsurprisingly, it's absurdly obvious that Akebono isn't even trying, he's not even doing a decent acting job
>>
>>1270126
That's a bit weird that he would subject himself to that, isn't it?
>>
>>1270126

Compare that the Tenta/Yoko sumo match and its obvious how little of a shit Akebono gives about making things look good. Although I guess in fairness that was like his second ever match in a wrestling ring. He got better.
>>
Oh hey, actual sumo fans! I've been trying to get some opinions on it, but you folks are hard to come by: What do you guys think about sumo as an Olympic sport? What changes do you think would need to be made for it?
>>
>>1270133

At that time, Akebono had retired from sumo and was looking to transition over to pro wrestling after he got his freakshow MMA stuff done. Given the payday he apparently got and the fact he was supposedly a big wrestling fan it wouldn't have been a hard choice.
>>
>>1270133
Rumour has it he used all his Sumo money on his failed restaurant, which is why he does pretty much anything someone will pay him for these days.

>>1270150
There's two major problems with Sumo in the olympics, the biggest problem is the lack of weight classes. Most viewers love the variety in weights in traditional Sumo but the Olympic committee thinks otherwise.

The other problem is that women aren't allowed to participate, or even touch the Dohyo. Sumotori are essentially shinto priests and/or representations of god on earth.

I think people could get over women participating in the traditional sport, and they already do in amateur venues. I don't think many viewers want to see weight classes added though.
>>
>>1270154

The other problem is that Sumo is so minor outside of japan. That kind of single-country dominance tends to get sports turfed out of the Olympics in favour of something more competitive (or, cynically, that they can sell more tickets for). It damn near killed amateur wrestling at the Olympics and that's got a much broader base than sumo.
>>
>>1270165
A very good point, nobody would be able to compete with Japan with the exception of maybe Mongolia. That wouldn't make for too much excitement.

Glad to see chiyootori again.

Feel real bad for Amuru though.
>>
>>1273358
Looked like some serious pain, I'd be surprised if he didn't pull out
>>
>>1272906
Yeah i noticed he mentioned that on the most recent video. A real shame it isnt more accessible outside of Japan. Does /sumo/ have a specific go to stream or replay site they frequent?
>>
>>1273592
There's really nothing reliable for watching live Online, besides maybe the mongolian stream but even that can be sketchy

The couple people posting the matches on youtube tend to be the most reliable and free way to see the matches, it's not great but it works
>>
>>1273592
I just pay the five bucks a month for the premium sumo app.

I'm not terribly happy with how the app spoils the matches in the thumbnails though.
>>
Matches went by really quick today.
>>
So i watched the previous 2 bashos, one in person and the other online and im trying to get into this. My question is what are some of the things you're looking for when try to choose a favorite rikishi?
>>
>>1274664
I picked chiyootori because I find he always gives 110%, I've almost never watched a match with him in it and been able to say "he gave up early there".

A friend of mine picked tamawashi because he tends to fight more with his hands.

It's different for each person, but eventually you'll find a rikishi that you will be able to recognize not by appearance, but by style.
>>
>>1273649
People have been asking for a no-spoiler option for months too, don't know why they haven't done it

>>1274357
A very average day, no real surprises. Can't always have a crazy Day 1 I guess.

>>1274664
Just keep watching, you'll definitely find someone you like. Pay attention to technique and also personality.

A favorite I think everyone should have is Aminishiki. Currently the oldest rikishi at 37, he's got a ton of interesting techniques and is always a surprise to watch.
>>

/sumo/ confirmed for the most helpful/welcoming thread.
>>1273649
Im seriously considering just paying the 5 dollars a month whenever there is a basho going on. It doesnt seem like a bad deal at all
>>
>>1274858
$5 a month is the first reasonable choice the Kyokai has ever made on any internet related streaming anything. They used to change $120 for a single tournament on their older streaming platform, ridiculous.

The do put up videos in-between basho to try to keep your $5 value, and some of them are pretty cool. Last month was all Kotoshogiku's best matches. If you're like me and forget to watch them though, it's better to cancel after the basho is over and just resubscribe next basho.
>>
>>1274854
For what it's worth, I'm tanimachi and just emailed them requesting no spoilers on the videos.

Mind you, I already get my gohiiki spoiled for me via push notification.

For all the talk about the lack of sources, the Mongolian stream is perfect right now: (Second night is live now!)

http://tv.onair.mn/watch/ubs

If someone here posts in Sumoforum would be good to let Kinta know, but it would surprise me if he didnt know about the Mongolian stream already
>>
>>1275224
Mongolian stream seems like the only free way to watch live now, and it's not too bad of an option

Kinta definitely knows about it though, it gets posted on sumoforum pretty frequently, may have been where he got his footage for last night

I'm not sure how I feel about foreigners in sumo.

On one hand, it's so tied to Japanese culture that it's like putting a poointheloo in a passion play, on the other, you can't say that foreign sumotori don't follow the rules and assimilate.
>>
>>1279165
They did put a cap on the number of foreigners a few years ago, we'll definitely see the number come down a bit but it's going to take time.

Being limited is going to make each Heya only pick the best foreigners though, which might have the effect of making them more visible.
>>

"6 months to heal" for aminishiki

That's very likely the end of his career, what a goddamn shame
>>
>>1277309
A little bit of a unsportsmanlike move on that extra shove at the end though. You're already god tier yokozuna, there isnt much need for that extra show of bravado/force
>>

Isnt that the whole "great men are actually sociopaths Steve Jobs" thing?

He's an extremely combative rikishi. Maybe thats why he's the goat

>>1279553
He got warned again for that kind of behaviour before the tournament too, this one could be blamed on continued momentum though. Doubt there will be any uproar.

That'd be a shame. It may not be very 'sumo' but, coming from the martial arts background that I have, I love a well-executed henka, so I'd be sad to see him retire.

Then again, at his age, I could understand.
>>
>>1280290
Why im not surprised Harumafuji is the first yokozuna to lose...
>>
>>1280290
Some good matches today, Mitakeumi, Tochinoshin, Ikioi and the final match all stand out

>>1280656
50 kilo difference between the two, but beyond that, yeah that's just Harumafuji for you

Puts up decent numbers but always loses at surprising moments
>>
>>1279628
it looked like Hakuhaou was trying cover his ass by seemingly being a bit buddy buddy with Takarafuji as he entered back onto the dohyo, but yeah i doubt he'll get any real blowback over it.
>>
>>1281606
It also wasn't nearly as blatant as that shove last tournament
>>
>>1270165
I still can't believe they cut wrestling from the olympics when it was a part of the modern olympics since its inception, and on top of that it was a major part of the ancient olympics too. To me it was like saying they were cutting the marathon.
>>
>>1280474
On the bright side, he'll almost definitely be a frequent guest with the Japanese commentators.

>>1282163
This is still sad, even as someone that is not a traditional wrestling fan.
>>
>>1282163
And the sort of pomp and circumstance and ceremy that goes with sumo, you would think that would lend itself so well to even like the olympics.

What is the point of the cap anyway? It is not like foreigners are swarming Sumo, is it Japan just slightly butthurt that a lot of the top Rikishi are Mongolian? Japan just has to perform better.

Although Hakuhou is pretty much the the best, the Japs can still jack off to Raiden and other good modern day Japanese Rikishi.
>>
>>1283728
>is it Japan just slightly butthurt that a lot of the top Rikishi are Mongolian?

That's exactly the point of the cap, yeah. Until Kotoshogiku won the Yusho a Japanese rikishi hadn't won in 10 years, they were extremely butthurt about that.

Kevin Owens is not involved in Sumo, but fellow Canadian professional wrestler John Tenta briefly was. Retiring after only 4 basho, making him one of very few rikishi to retire without a single loss.
>>
>>1290684
Okay i was memein first but this is actually interesting
Do sumos train or they are just fat? What kind of diet do they follow?
>>
>>1290686
Life of a rikishi is almost completely regimented, they train everyday at their stable with their stablemates. Usually about 4 - 6 hours a day but it depends entirely on the stable. Many rikishi do additional training afterwards as well.

The staple of their diet is Chankonabe, a very high protein stew. Often followed by a nap to increase weight gain. Average bodyfat percentage is something like 22%, which is about the same as the average person.
>>
>>1290467
Today probably had some of the most exciting matches so far for this basho. Why doesnt Gagamaru ever change up his game plan though? Dude is obsessed with oshidashi and just driving a straight line in general

>And that is how you should be remembered.

>Not as a man who resorts to a final day henka against a fellow yokozuna, on his way to yusho No. 36.

>>
Hakuhou is going to get walked to the dohyo by Vince McMahon and HHH at this rate.
>>
>>1293912
I really don't understand why hakuho gets so much hate. He's a boorish overly aggressive foreigner who came to Japan and dominated their national sport so hard that all the record books had to be rewritten. As far as I'm concerned that's living the dream.

>>1294931
While he almost always does that, he's far from a one-trick pony. All in all, he uses a significantly wider set of techniques than the average rikishi.

And he's insanely strong, too. Check his day 7 match; he takes repeated charges from the considerably heavier Inchinojou (I think, video inaccessible) without moving back an inch.

Sure, he isnt the only guy slapping, but most slaps are stopped at least partially, everyone knows what he will do and still does, he's le cut inside man of Sumo

>>1295115
Yeah its getting silly by now

>>1295122
Morbidly obese rishikis are at disadvantage. A few bashos ago we had Sadanofuji in Makuuchi (208kg) and he went 1-14. Hes not coming back

Also, as mentioned,Gagamaru is very popular. If anything Aoiyama mantits look more disgusting

Koshinage was the announced Kimarite, it's been 6 years since anyone won a match that way in the paid divisions

While this is wicked, I dont know if this will fly in the upper leagues with bigger weights

Still, that kimarite tho
>>
>>1299382
Ok, im the one who doesnt want Kisenosato to win, but that was amazing
>>
>>1299110
>that hand wave of dismissal
Oh man, only if Hakuho had the balls to wink at the camera like Kobe.
>>
>>1299352
>koshinage
I suspected as much; the specific name of the hip throw variation used is soto makikomi, but the recognized kimarite list doesn't include anything far more specific than basic koshinage. Being any more specific isn't required unless a small mircale - like this one - happens.

Still beyond awesome.

>>1299404
Probably not, sadly. Under sumo rules it's clearly suicidal even at lower weight.

Had to watch that Hakuho match a few times to see how he pulled that off. Amazing reflexes

Also, Kaisei put 100% today in his match. It was pretty close match.

Kintamayama is getting pretty laddy with the comments in his past few videos. He seems to really be enjoying the basho.
Also shout out to ma boy Gagamaru for going full on bulldozer today

that seems a bit premature to me, if he moves up to M1-4 next tournament and still gets Kachikoshi then I'll be more impressed.

Not that I don't love Hakuho, he's an incredible rikishi and always amazing to watch, but his dominance always makes me want to cheer for the underdogs.
>>
>>1303973
What's wrong about betting on sumo?
>>
>>1303973
I lived in Cambodia. Sumo betting is MASSIVE.

No, they dont care about sumo, they barely know the rules. Is just a very easy sport to bet on:

>Showing bouts in a shit coffee house
> quick yells of left/right blue/black wins
>throw a few bills and sip a drink
>quick bets
>solved in seconds
>next fight starts immediately

They have thousands of old fight recorded and play them non-stop. I always wandered if people started remembering and bet based on memory having watching it before
>>
>>1305201
Deep in our hearts, we all are.

I mean, we are watching the last prime years of the absolute greatest of all time, who cant be drawn to it?

>This is what Hakuhou had to say regarding Kisenosato:
>"He's a strong Ozeki. But he has shortcomings.. his habitual behavior, his way of thinking.." added Hakuhou.
>Hakuhou holds his annual international "Hakuhou Cup" tournament for youngsters. Some rikishi co-operate. Kisenosato never shows up. "He should show his face. at the tournament. He can give some advice to the kids and stuff, " said Hakuhou.
>The rikishi-kai (rikishi's association) shot a fan-service video of all the guys singing the "Hiyonoyama (that sumo mascot yellow doll) Counting Song" for the benefit of the fans before the January Basho. Kisenosato looks like someone put a gun to his head and when everyone is waving he is clearly very much not into it. "What's that all about? It's important to go after your one goal in life but if that is all he has he will never become number one. There are so many things to do outside of the training room that can help him achieve his goal as well.." said Hakuhou.

so lads, what exactly makes mongolians so succesful in Sumo? Mongolian wrestling is a very competitive sport on its own but you have a lot more room for grips thanks to the jacket and they don't have to worry about ringouts. Is it the wrestling experience combined with the harsher lifestyle? Something about Bokh training? Something genetic?
>>
>>1327576
they taller
>>
>>1327576
That's complex, but I think many people credit a harder lifestyle in Mongolia. Sumo is a very demanding sport that requires you give up everything in your life besides Sumo.

Growing up in a culture that is still fundamentally a farming culture, kids grow up doing hard labour in Mongolia. Heya life is much more similar to life on a farm than it is to day-to-day life in Tokyo. A big aspect of succeeding at Sumo is being able to adapt to that lifestyle.
>>
>>1327576

Money and culture, basically. Size had something to do with the American (mostly Samoan and Hawaiian) success stories, but its less the case with Mongolia.

Its a lot easier to sell Mongolians on the idea of becoming sumos than it is most Japanese. They've got more of a culture of fighting sports (for the average person, at least) and a lot more to gain from going in to sumo.
>>
>>1327576
As mentioned before, wrestling culture and living conditions. While it's about Judo rather than Sumo, this Japanese documentary investigates the phenomenon:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z6rGHAGYhk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQdSRQ-9IP4

Second vid, the interview with one of the most successful Mongolian Judoka, explains a lot. This man, as a child, ran 7km to the dojo to train, winter or summer, trained (probably Mad Mongolian style), then ran back home.
