They aren't rodents and yes, opossums are bros.
They get a bad rep because they look like rats, forage and scavenge for food and act a lot meaner than they are. I've caught many wild opossums and while they will hiss and gape, they never bit even when placing a stick in their mouth or touching their to tongue.

They are unique animals, clean up trash, roadkill and eat other pests.

As they get older, they start to get "mean" or at least they start developing their own opinion so to speak. Most non-domesticated animals are like that though. Its like they are just tired of putting up with you shit. Sometimes it happens starting at puberty for some animals, other times it is always when they are getting old for their species type.

I tested it myself on different opossums. They have teeth. They can bite, I'm sure some will bite. I have also raised opossums. My point is they aren't fighters and they rather not at all, so they are defensive animals. They are actually terrible fighters and very clumsy. They square off poorly with dogs, raccoons and cats.

For the size of their sagittal crests you would think they would put their bite to good use but not really.

Most pet possums are suffering from health problems due to both obesity and bone disease because people just feed them cat food. Even Heidi the famous German opossum was effected due to related conditions but everyone thought her crossed eyes was cute.

I really want one as a pet.

I drive over them in my pickup. They make more of a bump than armadillos.

They aren't rodents, nor do they really carry any diseases. They're marsupials.
They are basically immune to rabies, their body temp is too low for it to use them as a host. I don't know if they eat ticks or not.

Anon, opossums are basically free. All you have to do is look in the pouches of roadkill for some babbies, and hand raise them yourself. There might be licenses involved to call yourself a proper wildlife rescue though.

On the other end of this, a few years ago, I'd kill them with a club in the chicken coop. They are fighters. Not all play dead. They are not as fanatical as raccoons though. Pissed off raccoons are like weedeaters. Both have really nasty bites.

No. I mentioned cat food is awful for them. Opossums do just fine on their own, there is more than enough food for them where they won't have trouble with it.
