No, that's not true in the slightest. Pitbulls are just at the top of the bite list because they are the most common breed/mixed breed in the US.

A lot of people with cash to throw away get purebreds as status symbols without the faintest clue on how to care for a dog.

Samoyeds and Akitas are very high on the bite list and have been responsible for a few deaths, almost always of children because of their high prey drive.

No matter what the breed is, the more of them their are, the more bites are going to be attributed to them. The price of the dog is irrelevant.

The only dog I'd trust around babies are Staffies. They were specifically bred to look after children and are extremely doting of them despite looking a bit like pitbulls. I think they're one of the few breeds to get official certification about this, although like you said any dog can snap.

As much as I like pitbulls, I think people have to be realistic and realize that just as shepherd dogs have natural herding tendencies (nipping at heels, etc) and terriers have natural prey drive to murder rats, dogs that were bred specifically for fighting will carry the risk of dog aggression.
