A. Closure is important to get over a loss. It's not a tough call to let people grieve and move on instead of always having to wonder what happened.

Also this. For the rest of the pet's lifespan, there will always be that tiniest bit of hope in the bottom of their heart that maybe they'll get one of those wonder stories where a pet is found after years and years, especially if there's kids in the house.

If it was my own pet, either scenario would make me upset for it happening in the first place. One of my dogs got out last year and I bugged. I spent hours asking strangers, cruising up and down every street and mucking through swamps. 26 hours later a dude called me and offered to bring her home and I tried to give him money but he was just happy she was safe again. Even if someone took her, I think I'd be just as upset even if I knew they cared for her because I would feel like I failed.

In my old town like a decade ago there was this story in the paper. Here's a quick tl;dr

>someone finds it and takes it to shelter
>shelter can't find owners, adopts it out to someone else
>eventually family finds out
>wants to their dog back
>new owner refuses
>shelter admits they fucked up but can't do anything
>family goes to police trying to get dog back
>police say no crime took place, they can't do anything
>dog now forever with new owner who is a bitch who refuses to give it back to its rightful family

Happened to me in 2015. I returned their cat. Dad in the family cried when he saw it. They buried it in the yard with a tombstone the kids made for it. I think people are better off with closure, especially kids. They have to learn about death somehow.
