How do I know if I'm ready for a dog?

This uhhm, unless you can get one that is like 8-10+ y/o and happy sleeping all day and seeing you for like 1-2 hours a day before bed, then theyre gonna be alone from the beginning. Likely bummed out and poorly socialized and bored.

How long will you continue to be a student?
What is your expected career once you're no longer a student?
How much support do you have from friends/family who would be able to take care of the dog for a few days/a weekend here and there?

I am a student with a full time job + overtime and an unofficial part time job.

I own a dog and two cats but I live with three dogs and some other animals. I also don't live alone so whew boy that's great. We are all on completely different schedules and the free time we do get we just take the dogs hiking or lay around covered in animals.

Don't get a dog, just wait. Trust me, it's the best thing you can do.

I grew up with dogs and got my first dog the year before I started my PhD. She is a very high energy breed and I take pet ownership seriously, so it was a lot of work whether I liked it or not. On the one hand, it kept me active and outside when I was working like a slave, but in hindsight waiting would have been the smartest move.

Just wait until life is more stable. I know a few people who got dogs as undergrads and it rarely ended well for the pet. I'm sure you would do your best, but a dog needs someone to be there and it sounds like your schedule doesn't permit that.
