do hyenas smell bad?
>>
Yes they can detect rapists and child molesters from miles away

Probably.

You know what I bet smells worse? Tigers. Holy shit. Skunk is perfume compared to how bad tigers reek. I've wretched twice from smells. One was rotten pork loin and the other was walking by a tiger enclosure.
>>
Trap question, it's actually a GSD
>>
Why haven't we domesticated hyenas?
>>
>>2470435
We probably could but they're pretty big. Ive heard people keeping striped and spotted hyenas and while I know next to nothing on how striped or brown hyenas act, even male hyenas can demolish down a door with ease. They're total tanks.

People keep them as pets sometimes outside the US but realistically I'm surprised we didn't keep trying to domesticated cheetahs because they are boss at hunting. Spotted hyenas yeah but imagine trying to wrangle a clan of them when you wouldn't be able to fight one off single handedly.
>>
Who can say besides someone who has been around them? Vultures are scavengers too, but apparently they don't actually smell bad either.

They are bigger and MUCH heavier than the average dog. Why do you think staffies can kill people? They're built like tanks.

There's breeds taller and maybe heavier than females but great danes and English mastiffs are sweethearts.

True domestication, through selective breeding, could potentially reduce overall size apart from general aggression. Hyenas are also potentially good pets because they are pack animals that instinctively follow a chain of command, like dogs.
>>
>>2470745
Hyenas are difficult to selectively breed because of the pseudopenis and their limited litter size compared to other feliforms. Egyptians tried thousands of years ago during the Old Kingdom: it didn't work.
>>
just asking for a friend haha

Tigers don't smell bad. The rotting flesh everywhere does.

Hyenas are smart as fuck together but their 'pack' dynamics boil down to who is bigger and who can rip who apart first and keep going. They regularly inflict lacerations and tear off chunks of face. While wolves and dogs express emotions(fuck off, I am angry, I am alert, etc) first and clear. Sure they fight but it's most of the time a show and a slight scuffle. We are well versed in dog language, just most people don't think of it because they are stupid.
.
Dogs are already thousands of years in the making and everyone already did the blunt of the work.
>>
>>2471351
I'd say that women are a little too wild to be called "domesticated".
>>
>>2471363
good point I didn't think of that. ;)
>>
>>2470353
Tigers don't smell bad. Must be all that rotting flesh or natural aroma of crappy zoo.
>>
Yes. They smell bad. Especially their breath. Had the privilege to get near a tranquilized hyena at a wildlife vet.

nig dogs descended from a species of wolf that was like 2x as big as modern wolves. our ancestors were badass.

You're thinking of dire wolves and they weren't any bigger than our large grey wolves in Yukon or the Canadian arctic.

Are hyenas more dangerous than wolves
>>
>>2470435
Hyenas don't have similar social dynamics to us, unlike gray wolves which could be easily assimilated into human hierarchies.
>>2470486
>>2471351
Gray wolves are much larger than hyenas. Obviously a man would not be even close to being equal to a wolf, but often in social, especially hierarchical animals with large litters there will be runts due to sibling competition, genetic variation, etc. Our ancestors took these runts who would have died on their own as they wouldn't be as threatening and they knew if they were outcast from human societies they'd have nowhere to go.
Naturally this lead to increasingly smaller dogs in comparison to their gray wolf relatives as that is what humans would have favoured, and these dogs become the ancestors of the breeds we have today.

You started off well with the hierarchies but taking runts out of litters was not where dogs came from
