Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.
Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.
Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:

-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Wal-mart (ugh) sells mesh hang-on breeder boxes for like 3 dollars, that's what my RCS are in to protect them from the guppies. I noticed shortly after getting them that one already had eggs so I am glad the babies are safe in there now.

>>

I tried cotton thread under the suggestion that "by the time it rots away the plant will be rooted to the rock/wood. This was not the case, I ended up using the rhizome's shape to sort of clamp it around my driftwood, or shoved it into cracks.
>>
>>2469046
well my issue is with some of my background plants, namely these swords that the filter must be dislodging and they float to the top
fishing line might be best then

I wasn't 100% sure if the guppies would be a threat to the adults, and then I found out that I do have shrimplets so it's working out fine. It was also to make sure I can keep track of them for the first few days/weeks so I know if any of them die for any reason.

Glue is cheap as shit. It's not "investing," it's practically pocket change.

If you want to spend even less I suppose you can try super glue. Actual cyanoacrylate.

But the difference is going to be like $5 vs $4.

>>2469657

>>
>>2469660
I already put two in there last night cause I was bored of them. Tasty snacks for my cichlids. Now I'm bored of my cichlids.
>>
>>2469649
they're useful in freshwater for the exact same reasons we use them in saltwater.

Saltwater people are more likely to have them because we need as much water volume as we can get and because we have more filtration equipment to hide. Also they cost a few hundred dollars to set up so they may not make sense in a freshwater system that doesn't cost that much in its entirety. But just like in saltwater it will increase the capacity of your system while hiding your filters and heaters and junk. In exchange you get the annoying gurgling and flushing noises that go with an overflow as well as the occasional floods that go with a pump or siphon failure.
>>
>>2469680
>Also they cost a few hundred dollars to set up
What? Maybe if you buy those rip off prebuilt ones. You can easily buy an aquarium and make your own with PVC overflow. The aquarium is the most expensive part depending on what size you get. I had a 20g under my main tank with DIY King custom pvc overflow. Cost me like $30
>>
>>2469680
So you are saying that a 90 gallon with a 50 gallon sump is equivalent to a 140 gallon tank? A buddy of mine is trying to sell me one for 100 bucks. Its only the two tanks with no stand or pumps or anything.
>>
>>2469649
>>2469680

exactly why the fuck nearly everyone universally chooses to use the worst possible sump plumbing system is a mystery to me

just drill your tank, hang-on and siphon overflows are retarded beyond my comprehension. worst case scenario your power goes out, the return stops sending, and the water in both your tank and sump stays right where it is
>>
>>2469686
>The aquarium is the most expensive part depending on what size you get
people forget about the return pump. In SW we usually use something that can return at least 250gph at 5 feet of head. Which is something like a 550-900gph pump. You don't want to go cheap on the return pump either.
>>2469689
>So you are saying that a 90 gallon with a 50 gallon sump is equivalent to a 140 gallon tank?
yep.
>>
>>2469696
>just drill your tank
still noisy, it's no different than a box. and you still have the box. and they both do exactly the same thing if the power goes out.

out of curiosity, why do you feel the need to offer advice on things you've clearly never done?

This is why cycling with pure ammonia is so much better. It's faster, easier to gauge progress, easier to control, and hard to screw up.

Even if you do something weird like a 100% water change before your tank is ready, big deal, add more ammonia. None of this waiting for flakes to decompose business.

So my tank has an outbreak of fim rot. Seems to be mostly effecting CPD and some chili rasboras. I've put these ASSHOLE mosquito fish in solitary because they started nipping at the fins of the sick fish.
How long is it on ok keep them in the tub? I want to run the full course of medication before I let them out so the sick fish aren't overly stressed. Will they still attack the other fish once the fin rot it's gone? Or do you think they aquired a taste for fin? Do they need the toilet treatment?

fish are opportunistic like most animals. their minds don't process that they eat on a schedule. they treat most opportunities for food as if they don't know when they will eat next. in the wild they constantly seek food and find it only occasionally and in small amounts. they are programmed to be hungry at all times.

so stop

Some of the pieces were much larger, but none of them were long like branches.

there's too much shit in there, it looks cluttered. create like two focal points with the hardscape. neon gravel looks ugly in my opinion but the larger rocks vary too much in color too. try to keep it simple and it will look much better.
>>
>>2471198
yep it's pretty shit but we can fix that. I won't get too autistic about parameters and welfare and whatever but you're housing blackwater species that prefer soft acidic water with species that prefer hard alkaline water. you also have temperate/hillstream species that are found in waters 10-20 degrees cooler than the others. if your fish aren't dying then whatever but if you want to go the extra mile then simulating natural conditions is very transformative for an aquarium since it alters animals' behavior significantly

the most basic retardproof guideline is the rule of thirds. here I divided your tank into rough thirds and the stars are the magical focal points. these are where you want to anchor a small eye catching plant or where you want the point of a rock to terminate.

you could start by piling rocks in one back corner and having the pile thin out as it spreads forward and out. but none of the rocks really match. to make any more progress you really need to remove and replace a lot of stuff because you basically have a pile of legos and mega bloks that just aren't going to fit together no matter how much you want them to.

More rocks... I trimmed the Amazon Sword because it looked like shit. The micro sword was already in the aquarium, but it kept coming up. I ended up separating it from the rock wool and attempting to plant the chains or whatever they are called. I used a piece of gravel with a zip tie tied to it with a small lead weight on the other end to help keep the plants from floating away. Then I added gravel. I will probably remove the two zip tied gravel pieces in a couple of weeks.

>>
>>2472073
A decent HOB filter will be like 60. You will need an air pump with airstones or preferable a sponge filter. Those together should be about 20. You will need about 25lbs of gravel and the price depends on what type you get. You could also get decor/plants for the tank. You will need fish food and water dechlorinator, which will probably be another 20.
Most people here will recommend running your tank for about 4 weeks without any fish in it to cycle the tank. You could put some snails or small feeder fish in it to help the process. I would stay away from saltwater until you get a firm grasp on freshwater.

Saltwater is great, but only consider it if you are looking to spend a ridiculous amount. Even the super budget stuff reefers think is cheap is expensive as fuck compared to freshwater.

Tropes you should avoid are probably tropes in general. It's cool to source all from the same place but ease of maintenance and compatibility should be primary concerns rather than one biotrope.

If you mean in general what to avoid, that really depends on your level of commitment and, super important, your water parameters. Test your water first. It is very easy to take care of freshwater fish that are already suited to your water's parameters rather than trying to tweak the shit out of your parameters every time you need to do a water change or need a top off.

E.g. if your tap water is pH of 7.4, don't bother looking at fish that greatly prefer 6.5. It can be done but it's more hassle than it's worth for a first time keeper.

Gravel is actually optional depending on what you stock your tank with. Many fish don't give two shits about decor. For instance if you get hatchetfish, which stay at the top of the tank, they won't even ever know if you have gravel.

Aquaclear is the gold standard for most people for HOB. An aquaclear 70 (up to 70G) is about $50. Lots of room to play around with.

Air pump/stones are also dependent on the fish you get. Many fish won't need them, although with your tank size, if you do decide to go for larger fish, some of them will require them.

Biggest thing to look up is cycling (nitrogen cycle), which >>2472082 mentions.

TL:DR; find out your tap water parameters, choose fish based on params and your tank square footage, figure out what equipment/decor you need after that.
>>
>>2472843
i like this explanation of the nitrogen cycle
>>

>>
>>2472854
You could, but your water will get brown from the tannins. Why not use R/O water? What is the pH of your tap water?
>>
>>2472865
pH is like 8, but I'm more worried about my hardness
its like 200ish ppm for GH and KH
I don't mind tannins too much, I'm doing tetras anyways

My cycle just finished, so I'm trying to get parameters under control now. now do I want r/o water or spring water?
>>
>>2472863
thanks b0ss
>>
>>2472873
R/O isn't the same as spring water. Spring water will likely have some type of minerals in it. If you can easily get R/O, you should. How big is your tank?
>>
>>2472873
just because soft water is acidic does not imply that making your water acidic will soften it.

Hardness means absolutely nothing unless you're trying to adjust pH. If you don't care about pH then hardness doesn't matter.
>>
>>2472878
only 10g, not a lot to work with I know
I normally wouldn't even have worried about it, but my water seems hard, even by hardness standards

>>2472880
it doesn't? shit I assumed they were tied together, that by lowering one the other would follow. especially since my water has a LOT of dissolved calcium
>>
>>2472882
lowering hardness WILL lower pH.
lowering pH won't necessarily lower hardness. It depends on what's available to be dissolved.
>>
>>2472271
>>2472275
Thats not an exodon.
>>
>>2472882
10 gallons of R/O is pretty cheap. If you have a dispenser nearby, just invest in two 5 gallon water jugs.
>>
>>2472892
I'll probably do that, just to do water changes with it every so often
looking around seems to imply that 200ppm isn't bad, especially for farm raised fish

I think I just have new pet syndrome, worrying about every little thing that could go wrong
>>
>>2472893
>worrying about every little thing that could go wrong
pH and hardness don't matter.

the only way they can hurt your fish is if you try to change them.

How can you tell? It was sold as "giant gourami" but I know for a fact that the wholesaler has sold exodons as "giant gourami" in the past so after I compared it with the (few) pictures of juveniles online I came to the conclusion that it's an exodon. It doesn't make a huge difference because my tank is large enough for a true giant anyway, but I was glad I had the rarer fish :^(

Why? People have to eat. You seem to be under the impression that the luxury that is afforded to you is available to the majority. You can afford to live a life where fish are pets and a wide variety of food is ready available. Most can't. That is their primary form of food. You hate them for eating what did they can get their hands on?
If you had linked a video of people treating animals badly like selling live turtles in sealed plastic bags then I would agree with you. But the people in your video are just preparing fish for consumption.
>>
>>2473192
Although I have to agree with you in respect to hygiene. This is pretty appalling stuff. But then again, think of where they are from and what their situation is. A lot of these people don't even have access to clean drinking water, let alone any semblance of an education. They don't know any better.

No, I'm all for killing animals if and as long as you're going to eat them. I don't give a shit that they killed a fish that some keep as a pet, it's the way they cut that shit up. Why in the fuck would you ever let food be close to the floor or 30 cm away from your naked feet? It's fucking disgusting.
Look at how he swipes the floor with his hand at 2:00, I wouldn't eat that if you paid me for it.

And it's not the first time I've seen this either, once I saw a video of some other Asian shithole where they were cutting up fish literally on the street, ON the street with no cutting boards, again, ON THE STREET, right next to a light post where dogs and drunks piss. Do gooks not have hygiene standards in the slightest?

Like fucking hell man, I live below the Great Wall of Trump and not even the subhuman Mexishits treat food with this kind of disrespect.
>>
>>2473192
this
>>
>>2473197
Like I said, they can't even get clean drinking water, how do you expect them to get cutting boards and be able to affordably implement sanitation practices? Don't get me wrong, that shit is disgusting, but we were all living like that not too long ago.
>>
>>2473197
The main problem though stems from a lack of education for the general population. They don't know to make the connection between sanitation and health. And the ones that do can't afford to do anything about it. It sucks. But to be human is to suck.

Hey /aq/, you guys seem pretty savvy so I've come here for some advice after reaching wits end recently.

Tl;dr backstory but I've moved frequently in recent years and ended up abandoning all of my tanks in the process. Right now I have a weather loach in a plastic tub and wanted to rehouse it in a proper aquarium again. My dilemma is that I now live in an RV, which I know fully well will never sit perfectly level like a house would.

This raises a lot of questions about what my options are for housing the fish. I'd ideally like to have a 20G long at least. But even that size seems like the water pressure on the seams would quickly compromise the integrity of a glass aquarium. As for what I've read on acrylics, it seems that I'd be facing a similar potential problem down the road. I've heard of plywood tanks, but would those be more or less prone to leaky/split seams?

tl;dr, I can't ensure that any aquarium I own will sit level, but I want to rehouse an existing fish.

I have some fish in a tank an its been just about two weeks now, and today I turned their light on only to find them all suspiciously laying on their bellies in the corner of the tank, panicking I did a 25% water change or so hoping it would spruce them, but no luck.

They are usually very..swimmy, and poking around, today they resemble corpses more than anything, only moving from their cubby to swim about for a little while before going back to vegitating in the corner.

What do I do, they are just little feeder gold fish, but I don't want my lil buddies to die on me. Do fish sometimes just have a shitty day or something, are the depressed, bored? idk what to think I read a bunch of tips after tip on site after site and all its done is freak me out entirely.

Well I'm at 3 fish.. its a bit of a long story, they all were originally single fin gold fish (the kind you just feed to other animals 17 cents) that I kept in a laughably small self contained system (1.5 gallon(s))with one of those cheap bubbler/filter setups it came with, and they did surprisingly well for about a month. Wanting to show them some care I upgraded the tank.

2 of them did not survive their introduction into the new tank (shock maybe idk) despite my best efforts care and precautions, and waiting and waiting and waiting as the new tank had its filter running.

So I have this new tank setup (5.5 gallon I know it's not much but for tiny fish that's huge upgrade I think..) and just 1 single fin gold fish, feeling bad that he was alone and watched his buddies die I got some other gold fish (the kind with 2 fins, they can't swim for shit and are kind fat looking, nice job evolution. Not the kind with the ugly bulging eyes mind you). About two weeks has passed and just today all of them seem to have taken a turn for the worse.

Really didn't want to share this much info cause I already know. 5.5? CRUELTY ! Little fishes need 50 fucking gallons alone by themself! GG! Says the experts..but the crappy little tank I was keeping them in might have sucked but it wasn't killing them..idk.. fuck.

I just changed even more of their water bringing it down to half way and still no improvement as I type this. The single fin seems far more hardy and indifferent but the two fatties with two fins may as well be dead already cause they just want to lay on the rocks, only moving if they notice food is in the tank..

has anyone ever had loaches drag dead fish into their little houses?

this just happened. I saw a fish (which was alive and healthy yesterday) is now jammed into this tiny hole where my loaches live. I had suspected my Chinese Algae Eaters as being overly aggressive, but so far my current batch of fish has been okay... and now this. It's like they took the body and stuffed it in a hole to try and hide it.

Should I remove it?
>>
>>2473545
All my loaches do is dance.
>>
>>2473543
Is it possible they are sick? Maybe a catch all medicine.. Other than going full science on my water (I don't have the tools for sadly) I've been pretty diligent about water changes and letting it evaporate or whatever happens for a day or two before pouring it in cause the tank is kinda small..
An they don't really seem swollen beyond what they normally look like.. One thing I noticed is clear poop in the past 24 hours..an before that it was super dark reddish kinda. Not sure what to think other than I've damned them to die. Unfortunate, but ok.
>>
>>2473556
No water treatment? Any heavy metals in the water will not evaporate even if the chlorine or whatever else does. I wouldn't be surprised if it had to do with that. Water treatment is pretty cheap buddy and it's a basic thing that most use
>>
>>2473556
Well usually I see my fish shit is similar color to the flakes I feed. Is your gold fish shit clear or white?
>>
>>2473556
Also, you said you do water changes, but do you vacuum your gravel? Gold fish produce a ton of waste.
>>
>>2473559

>>

I took the thing (a pagoda that's been lying on it's side for pretty much years) and slowly removed it (two loaches (looking at me reproachfully) came out as I was lifting and I removed (with some effort) the dead fish and put it back.
The thing is, the fish is BIGGER at the front than the back and the holes in the statue are on a weird angle close to the side ( again why the loaches like it - nothing but tiny assasin snails can get in.) ) so it probably didn't voluntarily swim in there after 2 months.
Weird.
(and gross as the dead fish really didn't want to come out.)

Im planning on converting my 20gl into a shrimp breeding tank. Are there any fish i could add that wont try to eat the shrimp fry
>>
>>2473718
the canned answer to this question is otocinclus. however, they can be fickle and unable to compete with a large shrimp colony for food. and apparently they are super unethically sourced if you give a shit

you can try hatchets. if they could get to a shrimplet they would eat it, but they feed exclusively from the surface and mine don't seem to be able to eat fallen food no matter how hard they try. they certainly aren't able to pick through moss and search caves for shrimplets
>>
>>2473729
Could corys work? Considering both are sucker fish
>>
>>2473732
corys would techinically work, but they also would have to compete for the same resources
>>
>>2473732
I know they take bloodworms so they can clearly predate on shrimplets if they really want to, but people say they get along. most likely fine, not guaranteed

They live for so long, and are so similar to dogs in personality. I'm afraid I'll get way too attached and end up breaking my own heart if it gets some disease, because most of the time, vets won't treat fish.

How aggressive are gambusia?
I've got a couple in my tank right now just as a placeholder so something is feeding the ammonia eating bacteria while I figure out what im doing with fish

if I end up with like ghost shrimp and ~8 neon tetras, would they bother any of them if I just left em in there?
>>
>>2473685
fish that are easy to breed probably aren't going to be unusual for the mere fact that they multiply quickly
>>
>>2473747
Yeah, I don't really mean rare, just something besides neons or guppies.
>>
>>2473718
You could add chili rasboras. They are tiny and very peaceful. They might still go for tiny tiny shrimp, but they generally stay at the top so if you have plenty of cover for the shrimp or shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>2473741
I've been keeping mine with CPD and chili rasboras and they don't really bother them. UNLESS the other fish get sick. Then I have to isolate them until the fish get better or else the gambusia will fin nip and Chase them.
>>
>>2473741

Just cleaned my canister filter for the first time and holy shit there were so so many snails in there. It got me thinking; what are some live food culture that I could maybe grow in there? Something Hardy that doesn't need light. I could remove media from the middle tray and have it growing in there.
If I had a pea puffer I'd try to grow even more snail in there. Like maybe shove some Java moss in middle tray, add one of those submersible LED lights to it.
Anyone do anything similar?
How do y'all have your trays set up?
I'm using pot scrubbies on first tray, corse sponge with lava rocks on top for tray 2, and fine sponge and filter floss in tray 3.

More mystery worms. What the fuck. I cleaned my canister filter but when I turned it on this semi clear goop shot out everywhere. Did another water change and that was that. Went downstairs for a snack and when I looked at the tank there were fucking worms everywhere. Anyone know what these are? I know I'm going to get a bunch of replies saying "planaria", but please note the round head shape and lack of the 2 "eyes".
I'm going to be feeding my fish less to try and cut back the worm population but I've never really been sure on how much to actually feed fish.
I currently feed them micro pellets every other day, sometimes every 3rd day, a few pellets at a time.
I've read somewhere to feed what the fish can eat in 2 minutes so I've been doing that, taking care I don't drop so many pellets at a time that they make it to the substrate. Total amount is a small pinch of pellets. But still there are fucking worms everywhere.

Stock is 6 galaxy Pearl danios, 6 chili/Phoenix rasboras, 1 pygmaeus Cory, 1 habrosus Cory, 1 peacock Gudgeon, and 1 Scarlett badis.

How much would you feed these guys?

I need some help/advice. My crab died some days ago after days of being upside down and trying to get herself up (I helped her sometimes as well, not sure if it made things better or worse) plus having her last pair of legs in a weird position almost inmovile.
Then I took a closer look and noticed pic related which might be an infectious disease (doubt that it was due to my substrate or rocks).
The thing is that another specimen (or more) from another completely unrelated specie died as well, the only thing I could recover from him was barely more than the carapace and pincers, because it probably died during a trip I had. Not sure the exact cause but it seemed as the exosqueleton was kinda eroded as well.
Now three crabs that I got few days after the female one died are exhibiting the same kind of damage and I'm really afraid that they'll die sooner or later.

Is there a way to cure them or at least halt the infection if there is indeed one? Would the hot temperature (compared to their habitat) be the cause/incentive of this?

Crustaceans (it doesn't harm the other animals): Xantho hydrophilus/incisus, Porcellana platychelles, Palaemon serratus
On another note, of the three species, the shrimps are the only ones to seem unaffected by this. Dunno why exactly.

Guys I need your advice. Got a gift card for an online fish store and I'm not sure what fish to get. It's down to either 3 more peacock Gudgeon or 6 more pygmy Cory. Problem is I'm not sure about how aggressive the Gudgeon will get if they start breeding or if this tank size is adequate for more of them. And the pygmy Cory have been a struggle for me. Tried twice and both times the batch of Cory seemingly died for no reason a week or two later. I'm leaving towards the Cory, and plan on seting up a 10g quarantine tank for them.

Ran everything by aqadvisor and I'd like some input. Does this look reasonable or is the website being unrealistic?

Poa-Sumps-17.jpg.cf.jpg
24KB, 533x399px
Hey everyone! Just a few questions about sumps! I think I know the answer to a few of these, I just want to have another/more opinion(s?).

I am planning to add a 10G sump to a 29G system. Reason I am doing this is to learn how to do it for when I attempt to do the same to a future 75G system.

1) For the 75, what size sump should I build?

2) For choosing fish for the systems by water capacity, do I add the total water in the system, so about 40 G or should I just use the 29G/30G number? Im guessing this also applies to equipment size?

3) Drilling my own holes. In the 29, I can drill through the bottom. The 75 in the future should be tempered at least on the bottom. Is it a big deal to drill through the side of the tank? The goal is to stay away from the hang over overflow modules.

4) Is a protein skimmer mandatory? It isn't a huge issue, but I don't have one at the moment. If I added it later, is it a big deal?

5) How do you sumpers deal with power outage? Backup battery and run filter X time per hour? Manually pump water in intervals?

6) Has anyone built their own sump before? Do you use plastic or glass?

7) Refugium vs Sump? What is the difference?

8) How many media stages do you use? How many chambers in the system?

9) Is a canister and a sump really that comparable? Is it worth just getting a cannister, at least on the 29? Issue being I don't get the experience.

10) Has anyone built a control system for the pumps and stuff? I'm an Engineer, so the goal is easy obtainable. I am going to control lights with a 2.4gHz signal, pumps with pwm, manual heater and optional chiller loops, etc. Just looking for experience with it!

Thank you in advance!
