I have a dog, I'm the one who trained it when it was a puppy, whenever it has needed care I've provided it, but the little ingrate has become spiteful of me over the years, the only feelings it lends to me are defensive, it either slinks away from me cowardly with it's tail tucked or it growls at me UNLESS my parents are gone in which case it will run to me for protection. I don't really understand this dog psychology, and it's made me kind of hate dogs and think they are stupid

This makes no sense. Dogs don't hate anyone for no reason, they've literally been bred to form reasonably close bonds almost immediately. You and/or your parents probably ascribe to dominance theory and took it to extremes and have traumatized her
