Now don't know exactly what breed I'm getting but this will be my first dog. I need suggestions based on these things I'm going to say. 1) I'd like a medium sized dog, like a Beagle. 2) I'd like a dog that can be an inside and outside dog. 3) I want a dog that will be friendly and lay in the bed with it's owner. 4) A dog that can be trained to defend.
All I'll say is that beagles can be very loud, if you're willing to deal with that, good. But consider it

Enjoy your mess of a dog.

I think it would be better if you got the dog to bark in you have intruders and get a gun.
get a swedish vallhund
>small but strong and durable for it's size
>friendly and energetic
>fairly independent and intelligent
>will bark (real barks, no yapping) up a storm if someone even thinks of approaching your front door
Not the best if you live in a metropolitan area though.

That's exactly why I got a beagle. I don't want my dog getting hurt by some methhead with a knife when I can just run down and shoot him.
