Honestly, Khan academy does a pretty good job of giving a fair base of knowledge in a subject...I have not looked at their ecology stuff, but it's probably a good start.

Khan academy will cover like 80%. For the other 15%, just watch similar types of videos on ecology put up by tutors, TAs, professors, etc.

Berkely used to have a good video before they took down their free lectures off YouTube.

Environmental Science Student here, but I do ecology modules.
When it comes uni level scince its best to read scientific journals on specific topics you're doing (use Google scholar). They'll always cover the basics in lectures because of people's different school backgrounds.

Good stuff to know about in my experience is strains on ecosystems (habitat fragmentation, inbreeding/outbreeding depression, invasive species) and how they're structured. It's good to watch nature documentaries because the best ones give you a lot of real life examples you can use.

I don't know how it works in other places, but in my university in France we first go through a "licence" of biology which lasts three years. Then we can choose between three master degrees, of which one is centered on ecology and evolution. This is the one I want to join when I will finish my licence.

"Bachelor thesis" ? I'm not sure we have that here. We only have theses in master and doctorate and I don't know yet what subjects I will study for those.
