I love cats and buns alike (my cat stayed with parents after I moved in with my wife) but I can confirm.
>>
>>2450903
Yeah, cats tend to showfight a lot. A lot of noise, a bit of scratching and then running away again.

Rabbits will just go full kill mode with no regard for anything and keep at it until one of them is no longer moving. They're very cute pets but two of them being mad at each other is not pretty.

Anyone elses buns always losing clumps of fur regardless of time of year? I've had my bun for 5 years now and she's always shedding. Shes spayed of course. I think it may be because she's a little obese. It might be normal but before her I had only rex buns and that wasn't normal. She's Dutch if it helps.

He did it once on accident when trying to move one out of the way. We weren't home at the time, but when we came back he shat himself for 2 hours in his poop corner while we tried to figure out what caused it.
Eventually we found the broken cable and when we showed him he was scared shitless again. After that incident he doesn't even look at them anymore.

Not sure if his previous owner has hit him for similar things or if he got shocked by the cable, but if it works it works.

>>2452110
Same here, though he lives inside and is allowed into the backyard every now and then. Might be the temperature changes? Though I don't know what "causes" shedding anyway.

Climbing in cabinets, jumping on chairs/couches, sleeping underneath chairs/tables, randomly licking human toes to scare them and making humans trip so you can smugly watch them tumble while trying not to step on you.

Turtle bun exclusive: drag a big plush turtle around with you all day and show it to everyone at least ten times a day.
Also he tries to get free salads when people come over for dinner.

Aw, man. Maybe he's lonely? Why don't you get a second bun? Assuming turtle bun is male, he should get along well with other buns.
>>
>>2452650
He's autistic as fuck, also we got him from a lady that kept multiple males in a tiny cage so he's very VERY defensive towards other buns.

We haven't had luck pairing him with other buns and now the small bun shelter in town is refusing new buns cause the single owner has a burnout, so it's been shitty finding new buns. I don't want to look on craigslist-esque pages cause it's very likely that I'll be left with a bun that doesn't get along with him while the owner deletes their account and severs all contact and goes on vacation.

The shelter provided a free pairing service and they were bun experts, so they're very popular in town. Hopefully the shelter owner will recover and we'll finally find "the one" for him. For now however the only furry thing he gets along with is the turtle.
>>
>>2452716
Damn, I always get depressed reading about stuff like this -- people mistreating buns just because they don't give a fuck about other living beings and just want to dispose of them. And buns really are one of the most abused animals, it's such a fucking shame. And the worst thing is that I can do not a single damn thing about it, but to treat my own buns as best as I can and try to care for other buns in need when mine will eventually pass away.

Good for turtle bun for finding his home. He seems very happy.

Yeah, I can get pretty mad whenever people tell me I can just get another one if my bun gets sick. I've seen a lot of people that refuse to pay 30 euros for a vaccinated and neutered bun at a shelter cause a new baby bun is only 14 euros at the pet shop. It shows how little people care to do research on their future pets.

In my country there's at least a plan to stop bun sales at shops and you'll need a kind of license to get them. Not sure how they're gonna implement it, but it'll help the buns a lot. People just don't know that getting a bun requires the same commitment as getting a dog or cat.

Used to have a rabbit years ago. After a few years we started just letting him out of the cage during summer, he was too old and too tame to make a break for it anymore so we just let him run around all day. He started acting like our dog which was the weird part. If someone knocked on the door they'd both run to the door and stare up at it expectantly, it was the strangest thing.

Do rabbits poop alot? I want to get one and have it live inside our home, but I don't know much the rabbit cage will smell in a day from poop.
>>
>>2456052
They do poop a lot but in my opinion it doesn't smell that bad, at least compared to cat shit. The only time I noticed my bun's poop smell was when he had to sleep over at a (lazy) relative during a week of vacation, but I guess that you won't be afraid to clean its cage out more than once a week.

Also, they usually have one spot where they do their business so if the smell gets really bad between cleaning days you could just scoop up that corner and it'll be good.
>>
>>2456081

That is good to know. Thank you!

How much hay does a rabbit eat in a day? Or a month?

Trying to figure out how many lbs or ounces of Timothy hay I should buy for 2 rabbits.
>>
>>2456052
They poop a lot, but the poop is contained to a litter box, and they're very easy to litter train. Poop doesn't smell at all.

Their piss however reeks, so keep fresh non-clumping litter going and they don't smell at all.

Do bunnies like being pet like cats or dogs?
>>
>>2458552
Depends on the rabbit. I have two females and one is not fond of pets or being picked up, but the other is a total attention suck.
>>
Help me assess my current situation, please.

We have two buns that are nearly a year old now, have had them since they were two months. They spend almost all day hiding behind the couch, every single day. If anything, they do about 10 minutes of running around late at night, and very early in the morning if I get up at that time.
In the past few weeks they've been hanging out more in their pen, but still not out in the open. They're not completely afraid of people, they'll tolerate a bit of petting, but they never approach anyone for it, and if they get the slightest hint that you're up to something, they run and hide. They do love their food though, they always come running for that.

They did have kind of a bad introduction, but that was also over half a year ago. Are they damaged, just unfriendly, or is this normal? I feel like I'm raising cattle instead of caring for pets.

It's just their personality, I guess. Our white bun is also like that. She had a really bad experience when we tried to introduce her to our second bun, who can be extremely bitchy and territorial at times, and they had two really violent fights, second ended up with white bun getting bit to a blood. We did bond them after two weeks in separation, but she's been really timid ever since. I feel like shit, desu, and think this is out fault, although wife, who brought her home says she's been kept in shitty conditions at the store, where her cage was sitting right near the window in a noisy mall with fucking kids running around, so that might be the issue as well. The bun had a hard life and she seems to be happy now with her new friend (she binkies from time to time and flops on her side near our second bun) but she doesn't trust humans. You can't pet her unless she's really relaxed (after sleep etc.) because she always runs away and she spends most of her time in her favourite spot behind the door to our living room. Been like that for almost a year now.

The best (and the only right thing, really) you can do is to let buns sort stuff themselves. They're that kind of pets. You won't get anywhere by forcing them your company. Just keep doing what you're doing -- use every chance you get to pet them and talk softly while you do this (find where your buns like to be pet most -- ears, shoulders, nose, etc.) and keep being a good owner and maybe someday you'll gain your buns' trust.

What should I put on the floor of my rabbit's cage? I've read articles saying wood shavings, other say a micro fleece, I'm not sure. All I have is a plastic ground (it was formerly a dog's training crate) and I plan on having a litter box inside it with Timothy grass and wood shavings for them to poop in.

No, it's actually just one person who's really professional with buns and monologues and has a metric ton of buns to post online
>>
>>2458911
Not sure about wood shavings. They're kinda messy. I use pressed wood pellets for my buns, which is actually used for cats. They look neat and absorb urine really well and are really easy to clean up, since wet pellets tend to disintegrate and form clumps that are easy to dispose of. Downside is that they may be rough for bun's feet. In some cases buns can get pododermatitis. It's nothing dangerous if you notice it early, which is not a problem just check on your bun's feet when it stretches out and you'll spot it easily, and it treats well. To prevent that you can try different softer pellets or throw some shavings on top to soften it.

If you put a tray in the cage then there's no need to use shavings on the cage floor. Just put some mats that can be cleaned or something like that, that's not slippery.

I am looking to purchase/adopt a rabbit, as I'm allergic to dogs and my house-mate is allergic to cats.

I've never owned a rabbit; my only experience with prey animals as pets were childhood hamsters and that was years ago.

What do I need to know about rabbit ownership?
>>
>>2459280
There's too much to possibly fit in one post.

In short: don't expect it to be easy. If you're a responsible person and actually want to really take care of your pet instead of it being a toy, then you're fucked for ~10 years with bun.

Important:
- Get two buns if you can. Preferably from the same litter, since it can be a huge pain in the ass to bond two unfamiliar buns.
- Cages are a no. Bunny proof your house/a room and let them free roam. If that's impossible -- set up a spacious pen and let your bunny out from time to time, every day.
- Spay/neuter your buns. It's a win situation for everyone -- your buns will live a happy lives, fembuns have much lesser risk of cancer and you save your nerves and property.
- Read TONS of info on buns before/after getting your buns. Everything: diet, treats, toys, behavior, training, how to pick them up properly, how to groom or cut nails, etc. Never stop learning and always ALWAYS look up info if you're unsure whether you can give your bun something/do something with them or ask here.
- If you want to take buns outside -- leashes or harnesses are not recommended, since it's a stress for buns, who are prey animals and hate to feel like something is permanently grabbing them. Portable pen is a good solution if you don't trust your bun enough to free roam. Beware of dogs/children, only take your bun to quiet parks. Obviously watch out for insects/ticks/flies etc. Read about flystrike.
- Don't put your bun on its back -- it puts them into a near trance state, paralyses them and is extremely stressful. Don't "claw" your buns from behind. Always get down to their level before interacting in any way so that your bun can see you.
- There's a lot, too much to remember. That's the stuff from the top of my head. Other anons may contribute something useful, who knows.

Good luck with your buns if you haven't changed your mind.

>>2459295
No cages at all?

I live in a basement apartment; I'm not sure it would be safe to leave a small animal out in the open unsupervised.

An indoor pen I could probably wrangle, though; I have lots of open space.
>>
>>2459295
Forgot the most important thing: hay is the primary food in the ration. Buns should always have access to fresh hay, since their digestive system is built that way so they can only defecate properly if something is pushing poop out. Basically, your bun stops eating for a while = huge problems.

Greens are second most important thing in the ration. Always look up if you can/can't give something and be mindful of nuances (example: buns love parsley, bun you can only give it fresh, since parsley that starts to become yellow may be toxic to buns)

Everything else is a treat.

Grains are unrecommended and absolutely don't give your buns any kind of bread/bakery.
>>
>>2459299
Pen is your solution then. Be careful and mindful of possible breaches when setting up, since buns are escape artists.
>>
>>2459304
I'm sure that bigger is better, but how large a pen should I be looking for? What should it be made out of -- wood, metal, or plastic?

Additionally, my floor is primarily tile. Should I invest in a carpet to put underneath the pen? Would tile be uncomfortable for the rabbit?
>>
>>2459310
Some buns are comfortable with tiles, some afraid it and avoid like it's lava. You never know. Still, it's better to put something with more grip since buns can slip and hurt themselves displacing a limb. Foam mats can be good since you can clean them up if your bun decides to pee outside their tray for some reason.

As for the size -- depends on bun. Basically, as you said, the bigger the better. If you have some space available to use for pen -- ideally use it all. Your buns should have enough space to binky and run around if they gonna spend most of their time in the pen. I let my buns free roam long time ago, so if you want to know precise measurements you're better off googling it.
>>
>>2459310
As for material -- wood is okay, but buns can chew on it and destroy eventually. People do really cool set ups with walmart cube storages, which are unfortunately unavailable in my country, bun some pens made of them out there in the internet are looking really crazy in a good way.
>>
>>2459320
I was looking at something like this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/New-Age-Pet-Park-Ave-EcoFlex-Indoor-Small-Animal-Hutch/43830725

It looks to be pretty large, but from what you're saying it isn't 'free-roam' enough. Would you mind posting an image of what you'd consider to be a proper indoor pen?
>>
>>2459320
The rabbit won't chew the foam mats and get sick?

>>2459323
This is my concern, too -- wood seems like a bad idea, but if they chew on plastic or metal they're liable to hurt themselves.
>>
I'm trying to litter train my rabbits right now and was wondering how long it takes?

the rabbits I brought home are fighting each other now when hours ago they were close huddle together. They're siblings.

What the heck? Is this just a temperorary disagreement? Should I separate them or will they be okay? They're both backed into their own corners now.
>>
>>2459310
I believe the number I was given was 2 feet by 4 feet. Personally I recommend larger, at least 3X5, especially for bigger buns. In any case, bigger is definitely better, and free roam time as much as possible.

>>2459366
Litter training can take weeks to months, and they'll never truly take to it until they're fixed. The difference was night and day for my buns.

>>2459509
Sounds like they're not actually bonded. I don't have any personal experience with bonding rabbits, but I've read/watched some stuff. Start with them separated but nearby, out of reach but within sight/smell distance. Then, put them together, at first in tiny spaces for very short amounts of time, gradually moving to larger and longer sessions. Stop any fighting immediately. Common stresses like car rides together are actually good for bonding as the buns look to each other for comfort. Lastly, not every pair actually bonds, so don't be afraid to call the project a failure. It could take months for them to bond, though. Supposedly. Again, I don't know shit about this myself.

Foam mats aren't as interesting to bun. Of course if a bun decides to chew on it you'll need to look for an adequate replacement, but a lot of people use them with no problem.

>>2459366
Putting hay in tray/in close proximity, so that the bun can reach for hay while sitting in tray is ideal.
Bunnies literally shit where they eat in nature. It's related to their digestive system, I've wrote it in this thread already -- buns can poop only when food they consume kinda pushes poop out. They keep their burrows extremely clean, though.

>>2459509
Don't put buns in separation but nearby as other anon said. From personal experience and further consultation with experts -- it's a really bad idea since one bun, the alpha, may feel like something is endangering his territory and he sees the potential danger but can't do anything which results in accumulating anger and even more violent fights when you put them together.

Car rides in a cat carrier work extremely well. We took our buns outside for a 20 minute walk outside in a carrier and they were grooming each other by the end of it. Personally we put them in the same pen right after and they did fight, but not as violent, it was more of a show of strength and trying to settle down who's the boss. If you don't want to put your buns through that, then proceed with short sessions in carrier and put buns in separate rooms afterwards, so that they can't sense each other at all between the sessions.
>>
>>2459509
Oh fug, I wasn't paying attention. Your buns were already together.

So, forget the advices you were given in this thread before. Your buns are bonded but still haven't figured out who's the boss on the new territory. Let them sort it out. It may look violent at times -- it may look like one bun rapes the other in the head at times -- but as long as there's no blood/squeaking and they fight in shorts bursts running around, nibbling on each other lightly (there may be some fur tearing out) you're okay. Just get your balls together and suffer through this, like we did with our buns. If they start rolling on the floor in a clump, grunting/squeaking and/or there's blood -- send help immideately.
>>
>>2459484

Are there terms for the different head shapes of a bun?
This one for example has a really long snout while a lot of others have rounder heads or the transition from head to muzzle is more fluent.

Personally I kinda like the ones like in that pic more than the really round ones.

Can someone give me some advice?

There's a family in my neighborhood that keeps buying pet bunnies and letting them loose in their yard. The bunnies leave the family's yard and run wild in an area about a few hundred feet around the house.

The problem is, the family never makes any effort to bring the bunnies back and the bunnies ALWAYS disappear and/or die. The family did this with about 5-7 rabbits this year (and some last year) and I always find them eating grass by the road, dodging traffic etc.

Should I intervene in some way? If so, how? There doesn't seem to be any indication they try to reclaim the rabbits. The family is never home when I pass.

Bunnies shit where they eat so to say. New food intake pushes the old shit out.
So it's pretty easy to bin train them. You just put their main hey source where they can stick their head into the food and their ass is still in the bin.
This solves about 99% of the shitting issues.

Probably. Our bun had to wear this jacket for four days.

Make sure the clinic uses gas anesthetic if your bun is a fembun, since it's way less dangerous and recovery is very smooth. Your bun will most likely be awake and feeling well after 15 minutes or so after surgery. She may be less active because of cone/jacket, but that less related to the recovery and more to discomfort from wearing those.

We had no idea about that and our first bun went through an extremely dangerous surgery and her recovery was way more painful. I'd fucking give anything to change that with all the experience I have now. She didn't eat or drink for the whole day, I was so happy when I woke up early next morning and saw her drinking for the first time after surgery I was almost crying.

Lionheads are especially calm and friendly (unless you're in its viscinity with a tasty treat).

Used to have a fluffy male that was absolutely sweet and only growled whenever he was sleeping in the sun and had to come back inside. I took him outside on a leash nearly every week and he even held in his shits properly until we got home, to the point of struggling to walk because he had to shit that bad. They seem to get along fine from their videos. Collies aren't hunters they are herding dogs. They just want to herd things around not catch them and kill them. My collie would always bark and chase around squirrels in our backyard and while on walks, but she would never harm them even when they froze in place to let her get close to them.

Spaying certainly helps fixing behaviour and is especially recommended for fembuns since it greatly decreases risks of reproductive cancers and prolongs your buno's life in general.

Also, don't forget to train your bun. For example when she starts pulling the carpet, clap your hands and say something in a loud voice, so that it startles her a little. You'll notice she'll shake her head and stop. After a while, and it's hilarious to watch, she'll just shake her head and walk away before even trying to pull the carpet, because she will know that some unpleasant noises are about to ensue.

Of course some buns are little devils and that may not work that well on them, but in general that's how you train them.

You can try water spray, but don't get too trigger happy. Buns fucking hate water if it doesn't go to their stomachs, so keep in mind it can be stressful for your bun if you go overboard with that.

I think the reply did answer your main question. She might stop after getting spayed if it is a form of territorial behaviour. If not, you could train her like >>2469243 said. Just clapping and shouting something like "hey" already works wonders for most rebel buns.
