My main annoyance with the Laika thing is it was not done properly. Khrushchev wanted the launch to align with the anniversary of the october rebellion so the entire thing was rushed and not done by the book.
She could have been safely returned to Earth if they had not been rushed, in fact their plan for her to die painlessly from poison food did not even work because the temperature control malfunctioned and instead she slowly roasted to death.

70 million is a rough estimate of civilian deaths under all communist regimes in the 20th century in total, most of which belonging to China due to numerous reasons. Even Black Book of Communism, which inflates the death toll up to 100 million, puts civilian deaths by the action of regime within Soviet Union at 20 million. It's not a justification for these horrendous crimes and repressions, but claiming 60 gorillion people died is just as much of a disservice to the dead as claiming there were no victims at all.
