there are squirrels all over my backyard and sometimes i put stale chips outside for them to eat should i stop doing this?

I would just get some feeders and have fun watching the squirrels kite each other over a food source.

I just put food on my second story aapartment's porch. Not a whole lot as I'm not sure if it's allowed here, but pets aren't allowed here, so I kind of circumvent that in a sense. It's great I can get close to them when the glass is closed and they can't smell me.

Do you rent? I used to put food out for the squirrels all the time until the building got a notice saying rats had been seen in the area and if they persisted they would be eradicated. I didn't want the squirrels to get caught in the cross-fire so I stopped until the rats left. If you own your place and don't mind some extra creatures showing up there's no real harm, unless you meant from a nutritional standpoint. Look up what is healthy for them to eat and put some of that out. Mine used to really love raviolis. No idea if that was good for them but I figured it had cheese and vegetables in it that would give them vitamins.
