These are my 2 budgies, green and vert (im not a creative man). They are brothers so they always stick real close. really wanna tame them but since they are my very first birbs, i have no clue on how to start with it, any pro's got some good guides?
>>
>>2447987
I don't have any guides off hand, but I know with birds as far as cages go to get the biggest cage you can afford/accommodate. Also have varying perches of different sizes, and you should probably get a cuttle bone too.

this should help!!! I love budgies
add toys and perches of different thicknesses, shapes, and textures
they like playing with ladders, balls, and bells
2-3 toys at a time

how to tame a budgie
1: get social activity in room (talking to your budgies suffice)

2: they love listening to music with you but they also have sensitive hearing, do not play music too loud

3: watch videos/TV/play video games around your bird

4: interact with budgie without touching him *DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT* in a budgies brain eye contact=predator (unless he is already tame

5: place hand on bars of the cage and talk to budgie in soothing tones 20 mins a day
-do this for a week-
(after step 5)
6: place hand inside of budgies cage to get him used to your hand 20 mins a day
-do this for a week-

7: Place your hand in his cage with a treat, such as millet.
Slowly move your hand closer to your budgie and see if they
will walk to you to grab the treat.
do this over at least 3-5 sessions, moving your hand closer every time

Having a treat in your hand each time that you reach into the cage to
change your budgie’s food and water will encourage them to get more
comfortable with your hand
this step ranges from several days to several weeks

---HAND TAMING

1: slow, steady movements and soothing voice.
slowly stick out your finger so that it will act as a perch
and move index finger closer to your budgie slowly
try another time if he is too nervous

2:Once the budgie is comfortable with having your index finger close to him,
slowly place your index finger on his chest just above his feet and gently push up.
Make sure to use light pressure when you place your finger on their chest
use millet/seed to entice it

3:when your budgie has perched your finger hold finger as steady as possible
reward him with a treat as positive reinforcement
Practice having your budgie use your finger as a perch several times a day,
rewarding them each time

4:take budgie out of the cage on your finger
do this everyday for practice, may take a week to get used to

5:once budgie is comfortable being perched on finger, tkae them to rooms that are
unfamiliar to them
offer treats
aim to take them to different rooms for 15-20 minutes at a time, a few times a day

---TEACHING BUDGIE TO STEP UP

1:Have him perch outside of your cage

2:place your finger just above his feet

3:have your other hand holding up a treat that your bird can see,
try to entice your bird into stepping up

4:once the bird is about to step onto your finger
to eat the treat say "step up"

5:practice this over and over until they can step up onto your other index finger
without having to push on their chest
after associating your treat and stepping up positively, he will now follow
the verbal cue step up

always try to do practice sessions 10-15 minutes and several times everyday

I've had this sweet 3 month old indian ringneck for about a week now and he's seriously done a great job, but struggling to get along with our other birds or even his own reflection when they get inside of his personal space.

Anyone with IRNs have any advice? We have a tiel and a 3 month old conure that's even smaller than the tiel, and It'd be nice if I could help them all get along.

Hi. Does anyone knows what species this buddy is? I have seen some pictures and it looks to me like a white-fronted amazon but i am not very sure.
>>
>parents had two lovebirds
>one died
>have been looking for a new buddy for him
>his cage is outside and I see he starts making other bird noises when sparrows and shit are at the bird feeder
>I'm talking to him and letting him nibble my fingers since we are outside and he doesn't like to be held anyway
>get the bright idea of showing him a video of lovebirds singing
>he desperately starts 'replying' and flying around his cage
>didnt seem afraid or scared, just desperate or maybe excited

Holy shit, I feel like the most vile person to ever walk this Earth. Now he is chirping the most soft, quiet noises I've ever heard him chirp. Did I accidentally just torture him?

I don't know if I'm anthromorphizing him too much but my heart just shattered.

Either that, or a female tiel in drag.

Here's my birb, just went on a trip and my roommate sent me snaps showing him learning to escape his cage and leave a shit trail up my bed to the windowsill.
He loves chirping at the other birbs outside, but is quite when I take him out
>>
>>2449810
But pulling them out by the root is better? Feathers are embedded deep. Legit question, btw.
>>
>>2449825
I used to pull flight feathers from chickens, they don't feel it, I pulled blood feathers before so why not just do it on a larger scale? I'll make sure to soak the bird before I pull the feathers

>>
>>2449534
Keep us updated on how he's doing. Go slow and associate yourself with good things like treats. I don't know where you got him but I know a lot of dog and cat shelters end up socially neglecting birds because they simply don't have time or know any better.
>>
>>2450146
I'm actually a little concerned. I'm a first time bird owner and the shelter has now told me about a number of health issues it had such as eating issues, fluffed feathers, and green stool.

He was friendly to me, but definitely a biter. Biting isn't an issue for me, personally but should I be concerned about the health issues?

thanks in advanced.

Is this swift crippled? It never perches or stands on it's legs. I looked at its legs and, as far as I can tell, there are no external signs of broken bone. Likely to have suffered a 4m fall from a branch/birdhouse.

Great. When I was breeding cockatiels I liked to let the baby birds spend a lot of time with their parents. It pretty much helps them understand how to be a bird.

Yep I will be helping the bird learn how to fly using the two-perch technique.

I don't want to do pure hand rearing because I think the bird will be emotionally healthier when it doesn't think its a human. I also think birds will grow to be healthier when fed by the parents. I could be wrong but this is what I think based on what I have read.
>>
>>2450876
This is defiantly the way to do it with tiels. Have you done this before? I've raised a few cockatiels but I mostly breed macaws and amazons.

>>2450883
No. Originally my plan was to not hatch any of the eggs my cockatiels lay, but my partner wanted to try it out so here I am.

My dream bird is a scarlet macaw, trained to the point where it can free fly. However I do not have the time, space or lifestyle for a commitment like that. So amazing that you breed macaws and amazons. Beautiful birds, but not many people are prepared for birds that require so much effort and live for so long.
>>
>>2450886
I hope you enjoy it, cockatiels are a blast once their hand tame

I mostly work with hyacinth and blue and gold macaws but I have done scarlets in the past. Scarelts are especially difficult because they only will interact with one chick per hatching, bit they usually lay two eggs so I let the first hatched primarily live with its parents while the other is completely hand fed. I try to let the second one socialize with my hyacinth pair because they prefer a different time of the year to lay eggs.

It can get pretty sad though because there have been times when people buy my macaws for $2350 each but return them for $500 a few months later. They all get homes eventually, but it's a shame when people buy macaws not knowing what a commitment their getting themselves into.

As for training a bird to freefly, It's actually not too hard once they grasp the concept of flying. It's easiest to do the training than use a long avian flight leash the first few times.

>somebody is getting rid of their Senegal Parrot, 400$ with cage food toys and every thing

Next day, I drove an hour and a half to go pick up this guy.
He's skittish as fuck, but I can get him to sit on me for a couple minutes at a time. Also 100%fully floghted and according to the original owner always has been. So if I get too close and he doesn't like it he just circles around the house a few times.
>>
>>2451297
The frustrating part is that sometime when he free flies he lands on my cockatoos cage. I don't mind him exploring the house but my cockatoo is areally aggressive jerk to other birds, and strikes at his feet (has never landed one, I always shoo the Senegal off the cage before that can happen). So I think what's going to end up happening is I'm going to move him into my room, which is fairly large, and just shut the door during the day so he can be out of his cage. I really want to avoid clipping his wings because I already took him away from his original owner and I feel like if I took away his flight he'd probably hate me forever
>>
>>2449594
You should try getting another lovebird to be his friend. They aren't too expensive, usually less than 100 bucks, and if you asked a breeder they'd probably let you bring him in to see if he reacts to any of them

Any advice for a female quaker parrot that screams and makes lots of pissed off noises when a group of 2 or more people sit down to watch TV in the same room?
Attention does not seem to be the answer, as she'll continue it anyways. Same results for just simply letting her out of the cage.
Covering her cage up for an early naptime doesn't work either and I don't like the idea anyways.

She's not even my bird, but I probably have a better relationship with her at this point than her owners, who are kind of at wits end.
They did recently get a new dog, so jealousy might be a factor? I don't know though.

Any advice on Zebra Finches?

I just bought four from a pet shop on Saturday.

I believe I have 3 females and 1 male. I think the male must be young though as it only has very light colouring in its cheeks.

There seems to be one "dominant" female in the group. She is "allowed" in the nest, another female seems to "guard" the nest and won't let the other female or male in it.

The other female and the male seem to have paired off and cuddle with each other at night.

A lone natural male came into the pet shop the next day. I was tempted to pic him up as he was all on his own but I read it is not good to have odd numbers.

Also should I change my cage? It is quite high but have read finches prefer long cages.

Red-tailed hawk.

>>
>>2453311
I have a pet rabbit, and was walking her. Didn't even notice the hawk at first, but suddenly I feel a tug on the leash and she's trying to run back home. I should have followed her lead, but I just kept standing around and staring and trying to figure out what was causing the reaction.

Spot the hawk, mostly because it had started swooping in, and I just tried to grab it at first, getting it near the "shoulder" (I have no idea if that's the right term, just near where the wing met the rest of the body). It didn't like that, and started scratching at my arm with its talons, so I punched it in the head a couple of times, before dropping it (my arm was really bloody and burning). It fell to the ground and then flew off after a second, and I had a bitch of a time finding Binky and calming her down.

Ran the washer and dryer (other side of the door), the former is the loudest during the rinse cycle which is about 5 minutes, but otherwise not so bad. The dryer is fairly quiet, although there is a small but frequent sound of the clothes being tossed around.

Hoping to dessensitize him from all these sounds, but I don't want to stress him out too much. Been considering moving the cage a bit further away or placing it in a different spot all together.

What do yall think? Will he get used to the sounds or perhaps is it too much? The only sign I have to go off is that he is crouched over, but I can't tell if that's from the noise or if he's eying up the food in his cage.

From what I was told he was adopted from a woman who had a shit ton and were probably inbred. He had lived with 8 others but was given to them for free with the one he seemed to pair off with.

I'm really not seeing lovebirds around as much as I used too. Not in any petstores I've been in or called and there was one person on Craiglist selling hand fed ones but they were already sold.
I was told by another person I contacted and was out that they were opening a store in the US soon not far from here.

I think he would be much happier with some buds. They talk and sing to him constantly and he is allowed out. He doesn't like hands but he will fly, perch and crawl around you.

I feel for the little dude. They're full of personality and I can't imagine what it must be like for parrots to lose someone.

I have 4 Zebra Finches only had them a week.

3 females and 1 male. The male is fairly young and his cheeks are only just starting to come through. I do not know their exact ages.

I initialy put one bamboo nest in the cage, just for them to sleep in really. However two of the females seemed to claim it.

One of them would sit in the nest making almost sad chirping noises, whilst the other female that has a leg band would stand guard and chase the other two off.

So yesterday I bought a second nest, it caused a little bit of a ruckus at first but with some adjustment each pair seems to have chosen a nest.

Then this morning when I went and checked on them an egg had been laid but not in a nest. It looks like whoever laid it just ploped it out and it fell to the floor.

I do not know their ages and don't really want them breeding at this point. Maybe in a year when I know they are generally at a good age to breed.

Should I remove both nests? Why did the female who laid the egg just let it drop to the floor? Will she lay more eggs? I heard the batches can be from 5-10 eggs but it has been a whole day and no more have been laid.

I live in a small one-bedroom apartment. I'm debating on clipping my cockatiels wings because I have many windows and I'm afraid she will hurt herself.

>>
>>2454526
This stuff is awesome for stopping any bleeding, not just on birds.
>Accidentally drop a knife while making dinner one night
>Knife hits point-first on top of my foot, goes way deep, then bounces off a bone and pops back out
>Seriously bleeding all over the floor, gonna have to drive myself at least over to the neighbors and possibly all the way to the hospital in town (Rural life has its ups and downs)
>Don't think I'll be able to drive barefoot while bleeding like this
>Don't think I'll be able to bandage it well enough to stop or slow down the bleeding
>See the kwik stop on the shelf by the back door with the other chicken supplies
>Think, "Eh, why not?"
It burns like a mofo, but it sealed up my gashed foot enough for me to wrap some makeshift bandages around it and then drive 5 miles without ruining the interior of my truck.
>>
>>2455331

>>
>>2455335
She's very young, about 3 months or so. She's only flown once. I don't want to make her depressed though.
>>
>>2455339
The goal of clipping wings is not to totally remove the ability to fly, it is to limit the speed and distance your bird can cover. I clip my budgies wings starting at the outermost feather and only clip maybe 3 or 4 feathers. They can fly across the room and even put themselves in their cage but they can't fly into windows full speed.
>>

Grapes are harmful for some mammals but not so much birds. You only need to worry if they're consuming pesticides that were on the grapes.

Onions are bad though which some people try to feed birds, although I throw them out in compost and my chickens avoid eating them on their own.

How easy are domestic pigeons to take care of? There's a breeder show coming up near me and my SO thought it might be fun to raise a couple of the sillier looking ones. I've read that they need an outside and inside cage to be happy, but are there other things that make them more complicated than a parakeet?
>>
>>2457657
Red-tail, going for squirrel. She needs a coping. Current plan is to take it easy until it's closer to the time the leaves come off the trees, but I'll keep an eye on it and if it gets cold fast and I think the foliage isn't too bad I might go out earlier. Already ramping weight down, but she is like 200g over flight weight so it's about time for that anyway. First intermewed bird.

Around here you have to have a sponsor before the test. August is slightly late to start building a mews imo (I didn't finish mine until Dec.), but better late than never.

What game you plan on hunting? How long have you been looking to get into falconry?
>>
>>2458041
Maybe early July, but I was aware falconry was a sport around two years ago but was unable to participate due to lack of land and time.

I'd like to hunt cottontails, but I have no idea what game will work best for whatever bird I end up trapping, maybe it will just be one that doesn't do well with cottontails. The law says you can't retrap as an apprentice (once you take it home/report it). If you end up with a dumb hawk, you either have to release and try again next year or stick with that bird. My falconer friend warned me that he once ended up with a red-tail that didn't stop bating for five weeks no matter what he did and ended up releasing.

Luckily, permits don't pause here if you release but I wouldn't want to miss out on the experience just because I ended up with a hawk that couldn't be manned and wasn't allowed to trap again until next year.

It is late but I am confident in my abilities to build the mew at least, not so much with everything else but hopefully I get there. I am hoping to trap a large female before November, and they do inspections and sending out your permit quickly here so we'll see. I would love to trap a large female but I am probably going to fall in love with the first red-tail I trap and think it's too significant for my first experience trapping to release. Even if I end up with a male.

Grats on intermewing, how was it? What's your permit level? How's having an adult red-tail? I have heard they're harder to work with. Was she a passage or eyass when you got her?

Sorry about a mildly scrambled post, I am a little tired.
>>
>>2457834
Yes

>>2457797
I've heard many stories of birds associating vacuums with bath-time. I imagine they think it's raining when one is turned on, either from just the sound or maybe the vibrations/change in air pressure plays a role
>>

It's a bad idea to get a corvid as a pet in general.

>>2457907
Pigeons are one of the easier birds to care for, I think the hardest part of them is meeting their required cage space because they are pretty large birds. You do need at least two though.
>>
>>2458518
>Need at least two.
That, or be able to be around basically all the time.
>>
>>2458133
Permit level general, year 1. I don't know how ornery she'll be yet, but she has a ways to go to be as bad as my males were. Intermewing is not exactly hard, you just feed the bird and remember to not hunt, I guess. I'm pretty sure nobody does eyass red-tails in the US unless they're getting like a rehab bird, even then I wouldn't want it, an aggro red-tail sounds like a problem I would like to never have.

The later in the year you trap, the more you should think about keeping the first passage you nab. I got my first bird mid-January and in 2 weeks saw 3 passages total out of about 250 birds. By that point a lot have died off, so there's no room anymore for being picky with. Got the first one about a day into trapping, thought "oh I'll get another this one is too small," and wow was that a mistake.

If you have game and don't make supermassive mistakes I think you'll be alright.

Sage advice from the falconer I went trapping with: you find red-tails where there are lots of cotton rats. His advice for finding a place with lots of cotton rats was to look for a place with lots of red-tails.

Shitty wally world binoculars leads to shitty trapping and bumping every bird because you have to get too close. Passage vs. Hag is easier to ID if you can tell the difference without looking at the tail since their wings cover most of the tail when sitting. But I didn't figure out how to do that until trapping my second bird.

Have you been out hunting much? Do you have a particular bird in mind you'd like to have?

I haven't been hunting at all, maybe due to only having one falconer near me and he doesn't have a bird right now. I will probably go quite a few times in September before I have the bird.

Ah yeah, I forgot that red-tail eyasses get aggressive despite reading it a couple times.

I have been checking out where passages are hanging out, there's a highway near the capital with huge open fields and tall electrical poles. There's usually a passage on every pole, sometimes even two (nestmates). There's a decent amount near me too but that will probably thin out a lot by the time I am trapping.

Do you mean when I reach general? No, not really. There are a lot of interesting raptors out there, and many come with pros and cons. I can't really determine what would be best for me, I have most game around. Have you tried anything but red-tail? Do you plan to?

Here's a cute pic of a kestrel looking proud. The rest of the time, she was just making noises and wondering where the food was.

Ok, so in a couple of years, im planning to get a Blue and Gold Macaw because I find them absolutely beautiful. I read they ate fruits and nuts, need large cages and need to be allowed to roam the house as well.

Here's the catch though: I have mental invalidity. not severe enough I can't be a functional individual, but there are some traces of my behavior that makes me not too sensitive to others. I want the Macaw really badly because it would give me a life companion of a kind, something to grow old with. I don't plan to have a family or GF in my life because of previously mentioned mental disability (i would hate to pass it on to offspring, would rather end my bloodline where it is than have a kid suffer what I got)

what do you guys know in particular about Macaw care?

So we have had a fledgling bird in the backyard for 3 days now. my mother-inlaw has been -obbsesing- over it "is it too cold? does it need food? should i bring it inside?" we have been doing everything we can to keep her from messing with this bird till today. while we were asleep this morning she went out and tried to feed the bird then assumed it was too cold and put it in a box in the shed. we are looking now for the number of a wild animal sanctuary to take care of this. but my question is has the damage been done now? or can i just tell her to fuck off and set the bird free again in the back yard?

Also fuck middle aged woman and animals. I used to work at a shelter when I was younger and they were the ones more often then not we had to rescue animals from.

Better than nothing. If your confident / know what you want I don't think it'll matter, but from my perspective if I had to evaluate someone's suitability for falconry it would be done watching them in the field and looking into their initiative. For instance, if you get queasy at blood it is a no go, or if the prey dying makes you cry, or you have some kind of legendary incompetence that makes you a danger to grass. (A falconer I knew told a story about taking a lady out who had literally never stepped off of pavement in her entire life.) I feel like most people who would do that probably wouldn't be taking the test in advance, you seem like you know where you're headed. I don't want to come off as too judgy, it's one of my bigger gripes about internet falconers.

Other thing is if you haven't hunted you didn't see the good part.

Have you hunted outside of falconry?

>I have been checking out where passages are hanging out, there's a highway near the capital with huge open fields and tall electrical poles. Sounds like a plan.

>Have you tried anything but red-tail? Do you plan to?
I've had people shilling goshawks and Harrises. ("Why don't you go trap a Harris?") But I hunt squirrel, and FRT is generally considered optimal for that. I don't want to start experimenting until I feel more competent. Aplomados look cute and I haven't heard bad things about them, so maybe I'll look into that at some point.

as far as I know, there are always mutations, only few people have hybrids and are not usually publicly listed.

Rather looking for specifc contacts, if by any chance any pro or someone acquainted was browsing here

the hybrids, or rare parrots like black cockatoos, kea, or kaka, are not listed publicly. I do know some people mostly wrt mammals, not birbs.

I have for sale a young pair of amazona brasiliensis
>>
>>2460225
to add, the amazona brasiliensis are in the rare category; though this database is not reliable, it has only 14 zoos listed having them (one of these zoos has the pair in question borrowed)

sup /birb/, I'm in the design stages of a birb enclosure like pic related for 3-5 cockatiels. i intend to use 2-3mm steel for the curved blue section, but as their "hidey hole" is also up against this steel, i am worried about noise should they find themselves in the middle if a heavy rain/hail storm while we're out.

TL;DR, is steel too noisy to put this close to birb? do not want heart attack.

I've heard a lot of good things about goshawks for this area but also that they can be boring because they're just "too good". My state requires special permission for goshawks too for some reason, not sure why. Harris.. as cool as they are, it's just too cold here and I would have to heat the mew/hunting on exceptionally cold days would be impossible. Plus, it would have to come from someone who bred it or I would need to trap it out-of-state (you know how troublesome that would be permit wise!).

I would love to try an owl, I know everyone says they're extremely difficult to train but I love going out at night around here and I can't hawk at night with any other bird. I may just be a one time deal obviously.. because I may find out I can't handle an owl.

I'm not squeamish, don't worry. I am a chicken and pheasant farmer who grew up on a dairy farm. Obviously, I have to kill my meat chickens, shoot vermin, etc.

I enjoy fishing a lot but never did hunting, mostly because I didn't finish hunter's safety until five days ago. I may get deer tags this year and try it out. I had a lot of fun trying a muzzleloader and really want one. The most I've done is just helped clean deer and other dead animals my relatives got. Sometimes, I move dead pheasants and hawks off the road that got hit when I can pull over, just because I respect the birds a lot and would hate to see their corpses continually ran over.

I haven't encountered any squeamish falconers yet, but Wisconsin is a pretty "hillbilly" state when it comes to hunting and it's considered extremely normal. I would be surprised to meet someone who was against killing an animal here.

What are peregrine laws like in your state? What about other laws? Do you have many restrictions on what birds are okay? Falconers can take 2 peregrines per year here and it's first come, first serve basically. Whoever traps it gets it. They are working to raise it to 4 per year.
>>
>>2449769
Quakers are adorable. You have a good birb.
>>
>>2460582
I'm in Texas, so I can just go get a Harris basically, whereas I've only ever seen one gos and one gyr in captivity around here. Bit warm for snow birds.

I mean I haven't really explored owls, but honestly I would find one or five falconers who've done owls and pick their brains first. The only one I know who did one imprinted a EEO and last I heard it doesn't really hunt, and the impression I get is that in spite of its owner having your "I can do it" attitude he in fact could not overcome its unsuitability for falconry.

I suppose main thing with not having hunted before is just generally getting the hang of it. Finding game, scouting the fields, permissions, specific strategies in getting rabbits to move, etc. There's a fair bit to pick up. I know this because I was also from a farm, and I have had to pick it up as I go, and it's ... I don't know what to call it. Not hard, but maybe like sex or something, anyone can, but there's stuff to learn, and it felt weird for a while while just trying to pick up the rhythm, so to speak.

Word on the street is peregrine take may go up to 100+ nationwide, which should give one to almost everyone that wants one. I think it's 10 permits here, 6 in state and 4 out of state, random draw / lottery system.

I got to go down to trap peregrines last fall (helping someone else) and it was great, plan is to go again this year. Saw ... think it was 35 peregrines in one morning. Good stuff. You should go trapping with other people if you can, it's a lot less stressful when it isn't your bird you're trying to get.

For other laws it's basically a copy paste of Fed regs. Lots of apprentices with Harrises, and I have heard something about one with an Aplomado. I'm a pretty big fan of freedom, so I've mostly grown to resent the laws, but what can you do? It's still better than anytime in the last 40 years.

I want to get a Senegal Parrot because I want a cool, intelligent, trainable, exotic pet.

Will I regret it? I'm worried that I'll never have peace and quiet again.

I heard they're supposed to be sort of quiet but I've also heard the opposite. Also I heard if you go on an extended vacation they may hate you when you return.

Thoughts?

Usually I never leave more than 10 days at a time (minimum once per year sometimes twice) but I want to do a 1 month backpacking trip at some point.

Does this completely preclude me from having a parrot or is there a way to keep it socialized and not hate me when I return.

Are 10 day trips too much assuming I didn't do the 1 month trip?

Thanks

I usually leave bird food outside one of my windows several times a day, most of the birds that come are house sparrows and inca doves. Anyway, like three days ago I found a cat outside of another one of my windows when it was raining, it left after I saw it so I didn't think too much but today I heard a bird screaming and I went outside and saw a little house sparrow all scared on the ground (he can't fly either) and I saw that stupid cat again and now I'm worried what if it knows that tons of birds come to my house everyday? I don't want it trying to eat them... Wat do, /birb/? How do I scare off the cat?

Also, how do I take care of the sparrow? I managed to trick him and got it inside my house but he doesn't let me touch him, should I just leave him food and water and hope he gets better?

I might have lucked out! My zebra finches seem to have stopped incubating their eggs at around the day 10 mark.

So I may not have to deal with babies.

Having said that my house is really warm, about 26C so maybe they don't need to incubate them?

I'll wait 7 more days to see if they hatch, if not I will remove both nests.
>>
>>2457008
>Budgies will only lay if they have an appropriate nest (so I've been told)
wishing this was true.

My little brother has two budgies he never managed to ID gender of and they started laying eggs. Mom insisted they were infertile and not to worry about it before they left on their vacation. Now they returned from vacation and there was one egg left that didn't crack apart, and today he is now freaking out about what the hell he should do because there is a small hole in the egg and he hears occassional noise from the egg. The mother has also stopped sitting on the egg and is constantly staring at the egg from her perch.

So birb general, the gist of it is, what the hell should we do? I am not feeling like he is satisfactorily getting the proper research right now, this egg is sitting on the wire bottoms of the cage and I fear if it does hatch then the little guy will fall between the bars. We have no nesting box, no one thought to prepare for this eventuality so I am stuck coming to you guys for some advice.

So last night one of the nests wasn't being used at all. The parents did not sleep in it.

So I removed it.

Checking the eggs with a torch, 2 were not fertilised, 2 had some veins but nothing else, 1 had a tiny lump inside but the egg has a hole in it and I see no movement and the tiny lump doesn't appear to be developed.

The other nest is still being used butall the eggs are covered up with nesting. I'll give it 7 more days and if nothing happens I will remove that one as well.

Can a birb and dog be good friends? Do I pretty much have to raise the bird as a baby to not he terrified of a dog? hey guys, could anyone recommend me a cage?
I'm looking for a really big cage that can house 4 budgies and 2 cockatiels.
I do not mind paying lots of money
>>
>>2466294
Budgies need different bar spacing than 'tiels. A cage with bars too wide can cause a budgie to get stuck and struggle, leading to injury or death.
>>
>>2466300
well i'll get 2 separate cages then
what's a good budgie cage and what's a good tiel cage?
given i'll have 4 budgies and 2 tiels
>>
>>2466300
This is true. However, I've kept cockatiels in large cages with smaller bar spacing with no problem.

I also had one cockatiel that managed to stick her head though the bars of a normal cockatiel cage.

(I can't believe I never noticed, FF's spellchecker doesn't recognize cockatiel. But it offers cockatrice as a suggested correction. Now I want a pet cockatrice.)
>>
>>2466304
After a quick Google the max bar spacing for parakeets is also the minimum for cockatiels. As long as the spaces between bars is no more than a half inch just buy the biggest cage you can find. More room for exercise and will let the cockatiels hide from the budgies.

>>
>>2466644
Yeah. Sometimes it has to do with some small things like nail polish, cologne, hatred towards a certain gender, height or race and etc.
Sometimes it's because they accidentally hurt them once 12 years ago and they never forgot, sometimes for what seems like no reason at all.
It might not always be like that though.
>>
>>2466241
Depends on the bird.
You can potty train them, but it can also result in them not pooping and getting super backed up which is a big issue.

It just makes it easier to keep a tidy house. Having three birds has made it a lot easier to build up the motivation to keep my house clean. Get a bird stand/tree or two to keep the mess a little contained.
>>

I've been thinking about getting a Quail, probably keeping it in a rabbit cage or something around that size, but I can't find anything about how social they are, do you guys think a single bird would be ok or should I get a pair? How many do you think could comfortably stay in a cage? I know farming they keep them packed quite dense but I can't really find much about keeping them as house pets.
>>
>>2468045
My dad kept a few quail in a smallish cage for a while, they had a bit of room to walk around though. I would definitely recommend getting more than one, as they are social animals in nature.

Personally, I wouldn't keep them in a cage, a fenced in yard with a coop they can get into at night would probably be better, unless you have lots of stray cats/predators around.
>>
>>2468087
The problem is I live in an apartment so I can't give them any outdoor setup or a tremendous amount of room, at least for now. I was thinking a larger rabbit pen or maybe even a dog kennel would give a pair of them enough room to walk around and a few different places to hide, and give them time outside to roam around the apartment during the day. I have a fair amount of room indoors so I could move up to a full hutch but I don't want that many birds, preferably the minimum amount for them to be happy.
