>the great white lives on while the megalodon is extinct
Seems like they do better.
They compete quite well, as megalodon dropped out of the competition.
There's no competition. Really just came down to food source, which came down to methane levels or oxygen levels or whatever, right?
Imagine how different human history would be if megalodons never died out.
They died because they sucked at efficiency. Dumb fucks.
If you are not efficient you will disappear over evolutionary time.
>>2445431
Do you think it would have made a decisive impact on naval travel? I find it unlikely.
>>2445208
>20 feet max
Biggest pointer ever was 23
>>2445433
This and were BTFO by the evolution of killer whales.
>how do compete?
With big pointy teeth.
master race
Is it possible that megalodons are just larger great whites, due to an abundance of food, or do we know for sure it was its own species?
>>2445431
Deep sea threads on /tv/ and /v/ would be slightly more interesting.

Genomic evidence has shown whites and makos have a common ancestor distinct from megalodon

I think it would have. Imagine a wale-sized carnivore
>>2446110
do you think they would have been actively attacking ships? why?
legitimately curious
>>2446111
Probably not but I imagine they would have been a significantly larger threat than whales
>>2446111
Sharks are pretty curious by nature. Great whites are the only fish that will breach the surface simply to get a look of what's happening up there.
Sharks regularly take bites out of things that seem foreign to them. It's why sometimes people get their leg bit off and are left to bleed out.
Now imagine a megalodon taking an investigative bite out one of Columbus' ships. It'd sink the fucking thing with just one nibble.
I'm not saying that every ship at sea would be sunk, but it'd sure as shit make things incredibly difficult in terms of crossing an ocean.
>>2446115
Has there ever been a recorded incident where a shark took a bite out of a wooden boat. They have sensors in their nose right so they bump into a wooden ship and dont bother it. The only bites ive seen are some out that fiberglass material and the blow up boats but never a wooden ship.
It would probably only affect recreational offshore fishing in boats around 20-40 feet
more like megaL O N D O N
>>2446023
The teeth had no serrations, while those of a Great White do. Pretty significant difference.
>>2446123
I mean I'm sure it's happened, there's reports of people finding all sorts of junk in sharks stomachs. But I guess magellan and de soto would be fine sailing the seas

>>2445945
This is bullshit
>>2446915
>Megalodon dies out in the Pliocene
>Orcinus appears in the Pliocene
I would ask how Carcuckochles could ever compete but evidently it couldn't, and neither will Carcuckodon the way things are going.
>>2446023
Megalodon is the end of the line. We know this because we have clear fossil evidence leading up to Megalodon, and then nothing afterwards. The issue seems to have primarily been climate change, and their prey flocking to waters too cold for Megalodon. Without enough food to sustain them in the warm regions they were stuck in, they didn't have time enough to evolve before they starved to death.
The portrayal of Megalodon as just a big great white is more an artist's interpretation based on jaw similarities than actual fact/evidence of common ancestry.

>Imagine a whale-sized carnivore

>>2445208
Megs are 65 feet.
>>2446945
Leading theory was that the rising sea levels cooling down, loss of the majority of the fauna the Megs hunted on and cannibalism of young Megs by older ones is what lead to the extinction of it, not because of Killer Whales suddenly appearing you mongoloid.

Yep. Also sharks are wildly misrepresented in media and entertainment stuff. They're not this wild rapid sea monster they with constant urge to fuck shit up with prejudice. When I shark bites a boat it's somewhat more along the lines of curious sea pupper is curious, attempts to nom, is thing nom-able or no? Bite.

It's simple, really. More ocean means more boats, and more boats means more pirates.

Why did megalodon go extinct?
>>2452510
The shift towards the Ice Age killed off several species of small baleen whales that are assumed to have been favorite prey of Megalodon. Combined with increased competition from newly emerging predators and a probable propensity for cannibalism, they didn't stand much chance.
>>2446110
why would they attack ships?
and they would not be able to come close enough to shore to hurt coastal people
even if they did attack small fishing boats you would have big ships of people armed with harpoons going out to kill the "monster fish"
>>2446115
but wood reads as nothing to them
they might swim under it but it would seem just like a drifting oddly shaped tree to them
they nibble humans because humans are alive and giving of electrical signals
>>2452577
They attack humans because the silhouette is reminiscent of their prey. If a boat was size appropriate to be a whale, and say oars looked like fins so fairly similar in shape, it would be quite likely to get an inquisitory bite.
>>2448167
So like...an orca or sperm whale?

Wtf /an/
How would whales kill a specialized whale killer in direct conflict? I could see killer whales out competing them because when large food dries up they can eat dinky fish and megs would no be able too. Megs though would just bite them in half or cut off their tail in out and out conflict.
>>2454409
A considerable proportion of B. musculus bare scars from Orca attacks. If they can take down whales they can take down Megalodon easy.
>>2454409
Sharks are too dumb to survive a coordinated attack

>>2446115
You seem to forget what animal those sharks would be fucking with
You're right in the sense that it would alter our history but it would only be altered in the design of our boats and possible fishing weaponry
The second man saw a fellow sea explorer get taken out by megalodon and live to tell the tale would be the second that sharks existence would become threatened
Man would devise a way to combat them be it in the design of our ships or our weapons to hunt them
We wouldn't continue on the path of crossing our fingers that a giant shark doesn't kill us and keep sending defenseless boats out
>>2456626
what the fuck is a pointer
>>2445208
Team mammal owned that, dude. The largest animals on earth are all Mammals now. We're efficient, compassionate, emotional, we care for our young, we organize into coherent hunting groups, etc. We just win.
In case it's news to anyone, mammals have been winning the game for a long time. Birds don't stand a chance either now that humans are on the scene.
>>2456929
Mammals just got lucky they got to fill the niche the dinosaurs left
If they hadn't been driven to mass extinction we'd still be gerbil sized faggots running from one hole to the next
>>2456937

No, that's not luck, that's efficiency, excellence, and domination. Our ancestors were eating their young right out from under them. And insects are stiff competition and they didn't stand a chance, either.
