eggs for sell are female sex cells which will rot and perish with time in any conditions.
fetus eggs = female + male sex cells together which will proceed to develop into the bird unless the egg is killed by conditions.
encasing happens automatically and isn't bothered with the state of the cell to encase, fertilized or not. Why would the bird encase their empty ovulations? What a waste! They are not supposed to be left unfucked is all the answer you need.
