Let's talk about beetles
I like Ringo.
Not gonna say I didn't expect that
I like beetles a lot but I don't know what to feed it, don't you need like weird jellies or something?
Some beetles can eat fruit, like grapes
Now STAG beetles,, I think those ones eat weird jellies
So why are people afraid of these pic related things
They're harmless. I try to catch them in midair (only one success so far)
>>2442436
Noisy with scratchy little claws against your face or stuck in your hair.
It's a damn shame this forum doesn't have more people on it. I love beetles. Really gotten into Coloepterans lately. In fact I've been staying up late into the night trying to memorize beetle families and learn about their taxonomy and ecology.
I really like the Silphidae.
>>2442436
June Beetle? Noble Chafer?
Whatever it is, how can anyone be afraid of a damned beetle. They are fascinating. There are more species of beetle than there are plants on the entire planet. They fill so many ecological niches.
>>2442525
It wasn't a request for species identification since that's in the image name. It was more my general input to a thread on beetles and wanted to bump it.
Thanks for reminding me of the invert thread though
>>2442527
I know it wasn't a request ID, but I for example only found this thread randomly by accidentally clicking on the catalog link, I usually stay in the invert thread.
Also there are many people on this board, the posting is just generally slow because people don't hang out here 24/7 unlike other boards. Replies after 2 or 3 days are normal.
I love aquatic beetles.
They are very cool
>you will never don colorful chitin armor
>>2442593
I haven't really looked at the Dytiscidae but I probably should. Just another example of how adaptable and ubiquitous beetles are!
>>2442532
The insect zoo at the smithsonian used to have a case full of enormous gold beetles. I wanted some so bad. A keeper let me hold and it clung to my thumb and I could feel it thrumming as it 'breathed'. It was so content and comfy there. The only other beetle I've had do that was a spotted grape vine beetle, about the same size too.
How to get into beetle raising?
>>2442599
Well, yea and no.
>>2442860
Very cool!
>>2442524
green june beetle
>>2442439
if they get in my hair I don't mind, I just let it chill. Sometimes it tickles though. I have to say I get amused by people who are scared of them - when it buzzes around they hit the deck like they're hearing gunshots
>>2442881
well invasive or not they got a metallic paint job on the underside that'd make lamborghini jealous, and they're strong as fuck with their legs (can pry open my fingers if they use their spikes). I can't bring myself to destroy them, they're too damned cute
>>2442864
Fuckign beautiful
>>2442881
figeater beetles are native to western united states. no need to kill your buzzing backyard friends.
>>2442524
>Whatever it is, how can anyone be afraid of a damned beetle.
Ignorance and/or retardation, that's how. Every once in a while you see people post pictures of beetles asking if they aren't roaches or bedbugs, so I'm not surprised those people would be afraid.
>>2442281
I saw a tiny beetle last night. It flew off before I could take a picture. What is the smallest know beetle?
>>2443945
Nigger please. There are about 400k known species of beetle, and the smallest ones are not visible to the naked eye. Without at least a detailed description and location it's impossible to make a guess at this point.
If I have roaches in my house, can I introduce an invasive beetle speecie so at least my infestation is more aesthetic?
>>2443999
Longhorn beetles are pretty invasive and fuckhuge but do shitall about roaches. Clean your house instead.

Back in the late 90s there was a bug store at Pier 39 in SF. I went there on vacation once and ended up buying some beetles in a frame for like $70. They're in a box now so no pics but they're really cool irridescent green. I think there was about 10 of them in there. I had them on my wall for the longest time. Also got some other giant ass bug in a frame for like $40. They have the latin names on them but I never looked them up.
What is a good starting Beetle to raise?
Why is it nearly impossible to buy pet beetles in the US?
>>2445143
because contrary to what /an/ pretends,
most of the really expensive invasive species in the US have been beetles.
They look like an alien species when they are young

good beatle for a cold weather pet ?
These are the beetles I get a lot in my soil samples.
Staphylinidae.
Found this beetle on his (or her?) back drowning in a pan. My immediate reaction was to save it so I stuck my hand in and he immediately held on to two fingers very tightly with all his legs and wouldn't let go and I was scared he would bite me but couldn't pull him off without probably worsening the situation so I calmed myself down and prepared myself for pain in case he bit me but he managed to very slowly crawl off of my fingers and onto another surface in the shade. THAT WAS SCARY!!! Scarier for him though and I hope he will be okay. He seems to be just taking it easy now...oh, I just went to check and he's gone, yay. No sight of him. I hope he will have a long successful life. What kind of beetle is he? Found in Maryland.
Around where I live (s. texas) there is a kind of beetle that looks just like a June beetle / cockchafer scarab but really huge, like 1.5-2". It behaves like one as well, flying around and digging a lot. Pic related is it I am very sure, I saw one yesterday
>>2445547
Looks like the female of some sort of stag beetle.
>>2445366
I was about to be an idiot and say that's an earwig but I forgot about that family

>>2442281
I always wanted a tiger beetle
Thanks to the person that sent me this. I won't say your name, but cheers. Very helpful and comprehensive.
>>2445680
Thanks anon I think that's exactly what it is.
Anyone else get the feeling these things will blow Goliathus out of the water if we ever find the supposedly foot long grubs?

Post beetle battles.
Glad to see this thread still going. Beetles 4 lyfe.

kek
*hisses at u*
back the fuck off!?!?
>>2446537
You probably couldn't even raise a slug If you wanted to
kek indeed
By the way wouldn't call that a mantle since it has more body mass. The titanus giganteus thing over there is very flat and thin no wonder it's "bigger" (in surface maybe)
>>2446540
Titan beetles are likely to be the largest beetles and the largest insects in the world.
Nature's pedophile.
>>2442861
You could start with morio beetles. They're easy and very cheap. You just buy a container of superworms from pet store (these are sold as feeders for reptiles). Raise and breed as per online guides. Very simple. Morio beetles are about an inch in length.
>>2446539
What species is this? I find them innawoods in Virginia all the time.
>>2446996
where in virginia you at my nigga
>>2442281
Who /rhinoceros beetle/ here?
>>2447000
Fort Valley. It's a double-subducted anticline in the Shenandoah valley.
>>2445547
This was the best reply that I've read on here for å while. I too hope that the shebeetle will be ok.
They come out when I eat
My 8th grade teacher gave out prizes for good grades
He gave me this. I've had it for 10 years now and don't know anything about it. Just thought I should share it.
Why do blister beetles have such tiny wings?
>>2448185
Seems to be an Eupatorus gracilicornis.
>>2448451
>name right below the beetle
nvm I'm blind.
Is it bad to take beetles you find outside and raise them?
>>2442436
>People are literally afraid of flower beetles.
I get why people would be scared of a spider or a cockroach, but a fucking flower beetle?
>>2443923
Once I didn't know what a beetle was (it was a musk beetle) and somebody said it was "obviously" a cockroach.
I swear some Americans will mistake a land crab for a cockroach if it's dark enough.
>>2448690
relatively big, rivals the loudness of a helicopter rotor and likes to fly into people.
I can see it
>>2445366
I remember seeing one in my apartment not so long ago.
I was really surprised when it flew away. Those wings are really tucked in there.
