Anyone have any experience with blind dogs? There's an adorable one at my local humane society (picture included) who has been there for over a year now. I want to adopt him once I get a chance to visit him a few times but I'm not quite sure what challenges we'll face. He's a retriever/lab mix and the humane society says he's very friendly but I'm still not quite sure. Anyone have any advice or experience they're willing to share?

I've known a couple of dogs with no eyes at all and they got by fine enough.
>>
Just remember to talk to him frequently and you guys should be fine

Any problems with aggression? I know I couldn't get mad at the dog for it but is it common (at least for the dogs you know) to get scared and react by biting/scratching in the direction of the noise that startled them?

I had a queensland who went blind in both eyes.

She had no problems getting around the house and outside, though if we moved anything around in the house she'd take a day or two to get used to the new layout.

She did talk a lot though (however she had a bitch of an older sister and up until pepper died lucy was the omega of the family and didn't really show much personality)

While I have not had a blind dog (yet, my 12-year-old is developing cataracts), I have a cat who was born with no eyes.
If you decide to adopt the dog, just have patience since it might take a while for him to adapt to the new surroundings.
When I moved, I helped my cat learn her way around by snapping my fingers, tapping on the objects or with my foot. The dog will also use your voice to follow, so talking to him wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Hope this helps!

My sister has a blind dog. Hasn't made that much of a difference really.

The dog will learn to get around, you just have to not move all your shit all the time (duh). First thing to do is lead the dog to water any time you introduce the dog to any new surroundings.

Not with my sister's. She had him from puppy stage and he had normal sight. He did not really change aggression post-blindness.

That said, however, again she adopted him extremely young so I know with 100% certainty that the dog was brought up in a nice home, so no weird psychological shit going on there.

Get him a lil buddy dog to guide him around.
Put them on a leash together, I've seen it been done
