Hello /an/

I am looking for advice on my dog's diet.

So short story, I took my dog to the vet today for a medical checkup (she had an excessive thirst and urination problem earlier this year, related to the liver). He did the blood test, told me everything was fine, etc.

At the end of the session I asked him for advice, I told him that I had been one of those foolish owners who would only fed his dog chicken breast and wanted to try one of these premium dog foods that are more balanced and overall better for my dog nutritional needs. He took me to the veterinary shop and gave me a "Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Gastrointestinal", then said good bye.

I would appreciate a second opinion because the guy from the reception in this veterinary had a Royal Canin branded T-shirt and I think that was the only brand they had in their shop too. Also, this seems to be food for sick dogs, so I don't really feel good with the idea of giving this to my 10 year old dog for the rest of her life.

>tl;dr I have been feeding my dog a sub-par homemade diet and would like recommendation on high quality dog food.

Hard to say, a lot of the more premium foods vary locally.

Go to a specialty pet store or feed store, they tend to have better options. A few things to look for: High animal protein, no grains, no preservatives, no flavors, some form of starch for carbs. I'm not going to research that brand for you, but it's probably better than feeding it KFC.

You can just feed a balanced home made meal ya know. Royal canin and science diet are shit. They are like a few steps above gravy train and kibble and bits

If you have seventy-five hours, do some googling on your dogs issues and check reviews on chewy. Some dogs it takes several bags to dial it in.
I look for no "by-products", high fat and protein because high activity, and no corn. It ain't cheep, but coat, stools, energy, and overall health are the payoff.
You are right about the vets getting $$$ for the brand recommendations.
Vets usually get sold on food brands while in vet school when the (((food distributors))) give the school a donation and to get their shilling hooks into the debt laden little vetlets.
Think pharmaceutical industry. And don't do a fast change, switch food gradually, mixing new with old over several days.

Is there anyone that tends to have better discounts than chewy? One of the sites I use is merging with them and I like to have multiple places to compare with.

The 75 hours thing is so sadly true, but once you've done your homework and worked out what foods work best for your dog and you have a range available, it's such a relief.

I just said chewey because all the food and the ingredients are listed, and reviews, for what those are worth... I buy from a local chain. After 9 bags, get the tenth free.
