My cat loves playing with these little suction cup things that came with my glass desk. She plays with them for hours and places them in her food bowl when she's done. She also loves to play fetch with them; she'll drop it on my desk, I'll flick it across the room, and she'll run after it then bring it back up to the desk for another go.
The cat has never been so enthusiastic over the dozens of toys I have bought for her. Nothing lives up to these suction cups.
What random stuff do you have in your house that the cat has claimed as a toy?

A pokemon gachapon ball that used to hold a pokemon rumble figure.
He would bat at it and play with it for hours at a time.

Any kind, D4 and up. I have lost around 30. Yet I still can't find the damn hiding spot.

milk carton tabs
Corks from wine bottles, ear plugs, wadded up paper, twisty ties...anything they can throw around easily.
Rolled up cat hair.
Seriously, save some cat hair, roll it up into a clump, and just set it down in front of your cat. It will go crazy for it. Cheap and convenient, just have to make sure your cat doesn't eat it (and they will likely try).
A barbie doll. My cat loves the thing.
Also stuffed animals. She carries them around sometimes.
never met a cat who didn't love these shot across the house, I used to have one that played fetch.

whoops
Ping pong balls are the GOAT. There's no cat alive that can actually catch one.
My cat will try to eat ribbon attached to balloons if given the opportunity..
Don't give cats access to objects that could be accidentally swallowed or any house plants (except cat grass) buy toys specifically for cats; many house plants are poisonous to cats.

Glass marbles he broke a potted plant to get to. Apparently they are very satisfying to bat off of baseboards and tile floors.

Those littl table things that come on top of pizza
There were these yellow, foam Nerf-esque balls that my cat loved to chase after and carry around in her mouth. So I bought her a whole bunch of foam balls.
She likes to chase/fetch. Wish I could train her to bring the shit back to me though.

any particular reason why cats do this other than curiosity/fun?
Those twisty plastic things you peel off the neck of the gallon of milk before you take the lid off. Cats always love those
Fucking straws.
I had a diabetes sized soda on my counter once and the cat knocked it down. I found her running around with the straw in her mouth, soaked in ginger ale.
I've since found these like nylon Chinese finger trap things I can get at the pet store for 25 cents, which seem to have sated her straw lust.

I think I read somewhere that cats think it/act like it is small prey standing still

a twisty tie from a bag of bread. I can't throw it out because he loves it so much.

The objects are in its territory and must be removed. Kids do the same thing when something takes up the space they want for themselves

We lived in a high-up apartment, so we netted windows and the balcony so our kitkats wouldn't die
The little rings that break off when you open the cap of a gallon of milk.
